🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass
The baitfish situation at Castaic is extraordinary right now — huge schools of jumbo shad and silverside minnows are keeping the bass population well fed. And that's actually part of the challenge. Fish that are surrounded by easy, abundant food get lethargic in their feeding habits. They're not chasing every bait that comes through. They're picking their moments.
95% of Jim's fishing this week was with live shad. That number has been climbing all month and it's the clearest signal yet about where the bite stands. Everything else is hit and miss — mostly picking up the smaller shoreline-resident fish on conventional techniques.
The wolf pack pattern is still the best way to find fish. Schools of five to ten bass are chasing bait in the middle of coves, pushing shad to the surface where they can't escape into the weeds. That's where the quality fish are. Work the middle of coves, not the bank.
Topwater artificials are producing — but require precision. Lucky Craft Gunfish 95s and Fishus Espetit 95s are getting bites when you can target-cast into a blow-up. Blind casting is minimally productive — the fish push bait to the surface, eat, and immediately drop back to cooler water. You need to be watching for the activity and put the cast on it fast. Reaction time matters more than covering water right now.
The number: 20 to 40 fish per angler in a half-day — and Jim specifically notes this is common for anglers of all ages and skill levels on live shad. That's a remarkable statement about how good the live shad bite actually is right now.
🐟 Striped Bass
The striper report mirrors the bass report almost exactly — fish in the shallows, working weedbeds, no open-water boils. But Jim's specific adjustment for stripers this week is worth paying attention to closely.
The open-water boil pattern is done for now. Stripers can't circle bait schools in shallow water the way they do in open water, so the classic surface blow-up isn't happening. The fish are cruising the shoreline in groups of five to ten, pushing shad shallow.
The new play: long parallel casts down the shoreline. Jim is intercepting these cruising fish by casting parallel to the bank — not perpendicular to it — to get the lure in front of fish that are moving along the shore rather than sitting still. Right place, right time, right cast angle. This is a fundamentally different approach than hunting boils in open water and it's what the fall pattern at Castaic calls for.
