Jim Taibi was in the Eastern Sierras this week, but before he left he made sure the Castaic report was covered. John and Andrew Petroski from C3 Baits were on the water and brought back valuable firsthand updates on what’s developing at the lake. Here’s the October 11th report.

🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass
The fall transition at Castaic is producing two distinct bites this week — and knowing about both puts you in a significantly better position on the water.
The surface bite continues. Bass are still feeding on the abundant shad population and the live shad bite and topwater presentations remain productive. That pattern has been consistent for weeks and hasn’t gone away.
But here’s the new development worth paying attention to: A dropshot bite is emerging on shallow bluff walls on the main lake. This is exactly the kind of secondary pattern that shows up as fall sets in at Castaic — fish that aren’t in the coves chasing bait schools are staging on main lake structure, and the dropshot is the setup to find them.
The specific baits producing on the bluff walls:
→ C3 Baits Slim Pro — Cinnamon — The primary dropshot call on the bluff walls this week
→ C3 Baits Jobu — Neptune Shad — Running alongside the Slim Pro for quality and quantity
Both are proven Castaic standards — Cinnamon on the Slim Pro has been a consistent color call all season, and the Jobu in Neptune Shad is a natural shad profile that excels in clear water close to structure. The combination of both in your dropshot rotation gives you coverage across different water clarity conditions on the bluff walls.
Striper surface action is increasing in the coves. The fall feed is beginning — stripers are pushing baitfish toward shorelines more aggressively and any of the usual topwater presentations will connect during the active feeding windows. Color is not particularly important right now — white or shad patterns are working fine across all the standard lures.
What’s working for stripers:
→ Fishus Espetit 95 — Standard topwater call
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 95 — Same water as the bass, same presentation
→ C3 Baits Flukenstein — All three connecting during the aggressive feeding windows
