The all-new Penn Fathom II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reels represent the evolution of a class-leading platform, engineered for serious offshore anglers targeting tuna, yellowtail, and white seabass. By integrating the palm sideplate directly into the frame, Penn has created a more compact, lighter, and stronger reel that delivers exceptional performance when it matters most.
Imagine fighting a hard-charging yellowfin on the troll—the Quick Shift II 2-speed system lets you transition instantly from high-speed retrieve to low-gear power, while the Pull-to-Turn preset knobs ensure your drag settings stay locked exactly where you need them. The one-piece frame construction eliminates flex under load, and the stainless steel main and pinion gears provide the durability required for season after season of heavy use.
Important Note: Penn recently updated the handle design on 2-Speed Fathom reels from the power handle to a football handle and removed the ported sections for increased strength. Our inventory includes both versions—product images are linked to each variant to show you exactly which handle style you'll receive.

The Daiwa Seagate is an entry- to mid-level saltwater conventional reel built for anglers who want a capable, reliable star drag reel without stepping up to the Sealine or Saltiga price point. It delivers a premium component package — aluminum spool, metal star drag, and a composite frame — at under $175, making it one of the best-value conventional reels available for Southern California saltwater fishing. Available in five sizes (20H–50H) covering everything from lighter live bait applications to heavy tuna setups on 80–100 lb braid.
The aluminum spool provides the rigidity and heat dissipation needed for sustained drag pressure on hard-fighting fish, while the light yet strong composite frame keeps the reel comfortable for all-day use on the water. The metal star drag is smooth and features a positive click that lets you know if the drag has been accidentally adjusted during a fight — and locks the star against vibration from the boat.
The Seagate's drag system handles heavy braid-to-topshot setups well beyond its rated line capacity — the 65–80 lb braid with topshots up to 80 lb is a proven setup for tuna, yellowtail, and white seabass. Excellent castability makes it effective as both a live bait rod reel and a jig stick.
Key Features
- Aluminum Spool — Rigid aluminum construction provides the strength and heat dissipation needed for sustained drag pressure on hard-fighting saltwater species; more durable than graphite spools under heavy load.
- Metal Star Drag — Smooth drag with positive click detents that indicate drag adjustment and lock the star against vibration from the boat; prevents accidental drag changes during a fight.
- Light Composite Frame — Strong yet lightweight composite frame keeps the reel comfortable for all-day use; balances durability with weight for extended fishing sessions.
- 3CRBB + 1 Bearing System — 3 corrosion-resistant ball bearings plus 1 roller bearing for smooth, reliable operation in saltwater environments.
- High-Speed Retrieve — 6.1:1 (20H/30H) and 6.4:1 (35H–50H) gear ratios for fast line recovery on live bait and jigging applications.
- Heavy Braid Capable — Handles 65–80 lb braid with topshots up to 80 lb for tuna, yellowtail, and white seabass applications beyond the rated mono capacity.
- Dual Application — Excellent castability makes it effective as both a live bait rod reel and a jig stick across all 5 sizes.

Size Selection Guide
- SGT20H — 14.3 oz / 15.4 lb drag / 40–50 lb braid: The lightest, most compact Seagate. Ideal for lighter live bait applications, rockfish, and situations where a smaller, lighter conventional reel is preferred. 6.1:1 gear ratio.
- SGT30H — 15.0 oz / 15.4 lb drag / 40–50 lb braid: Slightly more line capacity than the 20H with the same drag and gear ratio. Best for yellowtail, calico bass, and medium saltwater species on 40–50 lb braid.
- SGT35H — 20.4 oz / 19.8 lb drag / 50–65 lb braid: Steps up to 6.4:1 gear ratio and 19.8 lb drag for heavier applications. Best for yellowtail, white seabass, and medium tuna on 50–65 lb braid.
- SGT40H — 21.3 oz / 19.8 lb drag / 50–65 lb braid: Maximum line capacity in the mid-size range (50/490, 65/430). Best for situations requiring more braid on the spool for deeper water or longer runs.
- SGT50H — 21.9 oz / 19.8 lb drag / 80–100 lb braid: The largest Seagate with 80/460 and 100/360 braid capacity. Best for larger tuna, grouper, and applications requiring the heaviest braid and maximum line capacity.
Best For
- Tuna — SGT40H and SGT50H with 65–100 lb braid capacity and 19.8 lb drag handle medium tuna; proven with 65–80 lb braid and topshots up to 80 lb.
- Yellowtail & White Seabass — SGT30H–SGT40H cover yellowtail and white seabass on 40–65 lb braid with the 6.1–6.4:1 gear ratio for fast line recovery on live bait and jig presentations.
- Rockfish & Grouper — All sizes effective for rockfish and grouper; SGT50H's 80–100 lb braid capacity handles deep-water grouper applications.
- Live Bait & Jigging — Excellent castability and high-speed gear ratios make the Seagate effective as both a live bait rod reel and a jig stick across all 5 sizes.
Frequently Asked Questions
- What size Daiwa Seagate is best for yellowtail? — The SGT30H is the most popular choice for yellowtail on 40–50 lb braid. Step up to the SGT35H or SGT40H if you're targeting larger fish or fishing deeper water on 50–65 lb braid.
- What braid should I use with the Daiwa Seagate? — For the 20H/30H, 40–50 lb braid is the standard setup. For the 35H/40H, 50–65 lb braid. For the 50H, 65–80 lb braid with a topshot is a proven tuna setup. The Seagate handles braid well beyond its rated mono capacity.
- Is the Daiwa Seagate good for live bait fishing? — Yes. The high-speed gear ratio (6.1–6.4:1) and excellent castability make it one of the better conventional reels for live bait at this price point. The 20H in particular casts very well for surface iron and live bait applications.
- How does the Daiwa Seagate compare to the Sealine or Saltiga? — The Seagate is Daiwa's entry- to mid-level saltwater conventional, sitting below the Sealine-X and Saltiga in the lineup. It trades bearing count and frame material for a significantly lower price point, making it the right choice for anglers who want a capable, reliable conventional reel without the premium cost.
Tackle Express Tips:
- Don't let the price of this reel fool you, it's a fantastic reel for both live bait and irons. The 20 size is perfect for surface irons because it casts very well.
- Pair it with a 7'6" or 8' Daiwa Proteus for the perfect combo.
- If you're going to throw surface irons with this reel, get an 8' to 9' deckhand rod and a Durans Super Clamp. The larger clamp will secure it to the rod better than the stock one.

The Shimano Talica A is the two-speed lever drag reel SoCal anglers reach for when the fish is bigger than the tackle they'd normally bring — shift to low gear and crank a stubborn bluefin off the bottom, shift back to high and pick up line the second it swims at the boat.
Short version if you're just here for the size: the 12 and 16 are 30 lb reels. The 20 and 25 are 50 lb reels. That's the jump that matters — everything else is capacity.
Which Talica A Size Should I Buy?
This is the question we answer most in the shop. Shimano's line ratings do most of the work — match the reel to the line class you actually fish, not to the fish you hope to catch.
Local yellowtail, white seabass, school bluefin, flylining bait, lighter yo-yo iron. The half-day-to-overnight reel.
Same line class as the 12 with roughly 25% more capacity. Buy it when the fish are running — bigger yellowtail, wahoo, 1.5–2 day trips.
The step up into real bluefin tackle. Sinker rig, heavy flat-fall, deep yellowfin, 3–5 day trips.
Same line class as the 20 with a big jump in capacity — 900 yards of 65 lb braid. The long-range reel for bluefin and yellowfin over 100 lb.
Cow-grade tuna, heavy trolling, extended-range trips. Low 4.1:1 gearing for maximum winding power.
Marlin, cow tuna, blue-water trolling and the heaviest bait presentations.
The two decisions that actually matter. First, 12 vs 16 and 20 vs 25 are capacity choices, not power choices — within each pair the line rating is identical, so you're buying yards, not muscle. Second, the jump from 16 to 20 is the real step up in tackle class. If most of your fishing is local with an occasional longer boat, buy the 16. If you're chasing bluefin on the sinker rig, start at the 20.
All six sizes are right-hand retrieve. Shimano does not offer the Talica A in a left-hand model.
What's New in the A Series
The Talica A is Shimano's redesign of the two-speed Talica, not a cosmetic refresh. Four changes matter on the water:
- Infinity Drive — a redesigned drive system that increases drag force while cutting side-load pressure on the spool shaft. Shimano rates it at up to 40% lighter rotation under high drag. In plain terms: the reel gets easier to crank exactly when the fight gets hard.
- Cross Carbon Drag — up to 66 lb maximum drag across the series. Smooth through the full lever range, no grab-and-surge at strike.
- X-Protect — water resistance at the key entry points, adding saltwater durability without the heavy, sticky gear feel that sealing usually costs you.
- Included Light-Line Drag Cam — swap it in for a more gradual drag curve when you're fishing lighter line. Most reels in this class make you buy versatility; this one ships with it.
Why Two Speeds Matters
A single-speed reel forces one compromise: enough gear ratio to pick up line fast, or enough torque to move a fish that has sounded. The Talica A gives you both with a push-button shift.
- High gear — pick up slack the instant a tuna runs at the boat, work a surface iron, or clear a line fast when someone gets crossed.
- Low gear — drop into torque when the fish sounds under the boat and the fight turns into a winching match. This is where anglers who bought single-speed reels start losing fish.
- Shift under load — change gears mid-fight without letting off the drag.
Best Species and Trips
Bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, wahoo, dorado, white seabass, and — in the 40 and 50 — marlin and heavy bottom fish. Fished off Catalina and the Channel Islands, on 1.5-day through long-range boats out of San Diego, on private sportfishers running the 43 and the 302, and on Baja trips.
Best Techniques
- Sinker rig — the dominant SoCal bluefin technique; low gear does the heavy lifting on the way up.
- Flylining sardines and mackerel for tuna and yellowtail (12 and 16).
- Yo-yo iron — high gear burns the jig, low gear cranks the fish out of the deep.
- Flat-fall and knife jigs in 200–400 ft (20 and 25).
- Kite fishing and trolling (25, 40, 50).
Rod, Line and Leader Pairings
- 12 II A / 16 II A — a 7'–8' conventional rod rated 20–40 lb. Browse our conventional rods.
- 20 II A / 25 II A — a 7'–8' rail or sinker-rig rod rated 40–60 lb.
- 40 II A / 50 II A — 60–130 lb class trolling or heavy stand-up rod.
- Braid backing — Power Pro. Shimano rates this reel's capacity against PowerPro specifically, so the numbers below are accurate with it.
- Topshot and leader — Seaguar fluorocarbon for leader, mono topshot in the class listed above.
- Terminal — heavy-duty swivels and snaps rated above your topshot.
Pro Tips from the Tackle Express Crew
- Set strike drag with a scale, not by feel. Roughly a third of your topshot's rated breaking strength is a sane starting point for bait fishing. Most anglers who set it by hand are fishing far lighter than they think.
- Try the Light-Line Drag Cam before you write it off. If you fish 25 or 30 lb on a 12 or 16, the gentler curve genuinely reduces pulled hooks at strike. It's in the box — use it.
- Shift to low before you need it. Anglers wait until their arms are gone. Shift the moment the fish stops running and starts circling.
- Rinse with low-pressure fresh water, never a jet. X-Protect is water resistance, not a submarine hatch. High-pressure water drives salt past the seals.
- Back the lever off to free spool for storage. Parking it at full compresses the drag washers and flattens your drag curve over a season.
Common Mistakes
- Buying the 12 or 16 and spooling it with 50 or 60 lb mono. These are 20–30 lb mono reels. Overloading the line class costs you capacity and puts the drag stack outside its design range.
- Overfilling the spool. Line piling above the spool lip jams under the frame at high drag. Leave about 1/8" of clearance.
- Braid straight to the hook with no topshot. Braid has no stretch; on a lever drag at strike, that's how hooks pull.
- Skipping annual service. Two-speed reels have more moving parts. One service a season keeps the shift crisp.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size Talica A do I need for bluefin tuna?
For the fish most SoCal boats are on, the 20 II A is the sweet spot — rated for 30–50 lb mono and holds 725 yards of 65 lb braid. For long-range trips targeting fish over 100 lb, the 25 II A gives you the same line class with 900 yards of 65 lb. The 16 II A works for school-grade fish but tops out at 30 lb mono.
What's the difference between the Talica A and the older Talica II?
Four things: Infinity Drive (up to 40% lighter rotation under high drag), Cross Carbon Drag rated to 66 lb max, X-Protect water resistance, and an included Light-Line Drag Cam for a gentler drag curve on light line. It's a redesign, not a color change.
Can I use a Talica A for yellowtail?
Yes — the 12 II A and 16 II A are excellent yellowtail reels, especially for yo-yo iron where low gear pulls a fish up out of the structure.
How much braid does the Talica 25 hold?
900 yards of 65 lb PowerPro, 730 of 80 lb, or 620 of 100 lb.
Is the Talica A available in left-hand retrieve?
No. All six sizes are right-hand only.
Should I fill it with braid or mono?
Braid backing with a mono topshot is standard for SoCal bait fishing. Straight mono is still common for trolling in the 40 and 50.
Do you spool reels?
Yes. We spool reels at our Santa Clarita shop and can spool your Talica before it ships. Add the line and spooling option on this page, or call us.
Does it come with a warranty?
Shimano covers it for 1 year against manufacturing defects. We'll walk you through the service process if you ever need it.

The completely redesigned Daiwa Saltiga LD 2-Speed Lever Drag Conventional Reel delivers the smoothest, most powerful, and most dependable two-speed lever drag platform available for saltwater anglers targeting yellowtail, tuna, white seabass, and big game species from inshore to offshore and the canyons. The two-speed design gives anglers the ability to shift from high gear for fast line recovery to low gear for maximum cranking power when a large fish goes deep or surges toward structure — the critical advantage in the toughest fights. Built on a one-piece machined aluminum frame and side plate with 6CRBB corrosion-resistant bearings, ATD drag, and Digigear precision.
Key Features
- Two-Speed Gear System — High gear for fast line recovery and low gear for maximum cranking power; shift between gear ratios instantly during the fight to match the demands of the fish; critical advantage when large fish go deep or surge toward structure where maximum torque is needed to turn them.
- One-Piece Machined Aluminum Frame & Side Plate — Machined from a single piece of aluminum for precise alignment of bearings and gears; eliminates flex and binding under heavy drag loads; oversized, super-hard, polished and meshed stainless steel main and pinion gears drive the kicking gear with extra strength and nearly silent precision.
- 6CRBB Corrosion-Resistant Ball Bearings — Specially treated stainless steel bearings with a protective shield on the bearing race that seals out sand, fine grit, salt crystals, and other abrasives; lasts 12 times longer than standard stainless steel bearings in saltwater environments.
- ATD (Automatic Tournament Drag) — Improved drag grease with low viscosity at rest that becomes more viscous immediately after drag startup; reduces initial drag startup inertia for a smoother drag from the initial hookup; combined with structural ATD system changes for consistent drag pressure throughout the fight.
- Digigear — Digitally engineered gear design ensures a perfect mesh between ultra-tough alloy drive gears and marine bronze pinion gears; optimized for speed, power, durability, and smoothness across the full gear range.
- Large Spool Bearings — Oversized spool bearings reduce side load so anglers can concentrate on fighting fish rather than managing the reel; contributes to the smooth, powerful retrieve under maximum drag pressure.
- Saltiga Executive 5-Year Warranty & Free Clean/Service — Industry-leading 5-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects plus a free 5-year clean and service for the original owner; expedited return shipping (2nd Day Air or Priority Mail) included.

Best For
- Yellowtail — Two-speed system is the definitive advantage for yellowtail on live bait and iron; high gear for fast line recovery when fish run toward the boat, low gear for maximum cranking power when fish go deep or surge toward kelp and structure.
- Tuna & Big Game — LD35–LD50 with 28.6/40 lb drag and 65–80 lb braid capacity for tuna and offshore big game; two-speed critical for sustained fights with large tuna that require alternating between fast retrieve and maximum torque.
- Heavy Offshore (LD55/LD60) — 33.1/45 lb drag and 80–100 lb braid capacity for the largest offshore species; 2.3:1 low gear ratio delivers maximum torque for turning large fish at depth.
- White Seabass — Lever drag precision and two-speed versatility for white seabass in kelp and structure; low gear provides the cranking power needed to turn large white seabass away from structure on the initial run.
Precision-Engineered Versatility for Serious Anglers
The Avet JX G2 Lever Drag Reel delivers exceptional versatility through optimized line capacity, powerful drag performance, and a narrow-spool design that excels in both vertical jigging and casting applications.
Why the JX Profile Matters
The JX's taller, narrower spool design offers distinct advantages over the MX series:
- Faster line retrieval: Increased spool diameter delivers more inches per crank without sacrificing torque
- Easier line management: Narrower profile reduces side-to-side travel when respooling
- Vertical fishing advantage: Optimized geometry for deep drops and rapid retrieval
MC Cast Control System
Five magnetic settings (1-5) provide precise spool control during the cast. Higher settings reduce backlash risk and actually increase distance—especially valuable for anglers transitioning to conventional reels. Setting 1 offers maximum spool freedom; Setting 5 delivers maximum control.
2-Speed Advantage
Switch to low gear when fighting circling fish near the boat. The increased torque lets you rest the rod on the rail and crank steadily against horizontal resistance—less fatigue, more control, better hookup-to-landing ratio.
