Castaic Lake Fishing Report – October 18, 2026 | Wind-Blown Week & the Weed Fishing Adjustment Every Angler Needs

Castaic Lake threw a curveball this week in the form of 15 to 30 mph winds that kept most anglers on the dock. Jim Taibi got out on two days and found conditions and fishing essentially unchanged — which is a good sign heading into what should be an excellent fall bite. Here’s the full October 18th report from 661Fishing.com.

🎣 Largemouth, Smallmouth & Striped Bass

The wind was the headline this week, not the fishing. Despite conditions that pushed most anglers off the water, the two days Jim did get out confirmed the bite is holding. All three bass species are still in the coves chasing the abundant baitfish, live shad is producing 20 to 40 fish in a morning or afternoon session, and the stripers are actively working the shorelines.

Where to fish right now depends on which arm you’re in. The northeast winds this week pushed most of the floating algae and weed debris toward the main lake, leaving the Ski Arm coves significantly cleaner than the Fish Arm. The Fish Arm caught the worst of the wind and is carrying chopped-up weed pieces from the hundreds of coots that have moved onto the lake and are feeding aggressively on the submerged weedbeds. Start in the Ski Arm coves if you want cleaner water and less debris to deal with.

The weed situation is the tactical challenge of the week — and Jim has a specific solution worth knowing before you go out. The submerged weedbeds in the coves are growing right to the surface in many areas, which makes throwing anything with treble hooks a frustrating exercise. The lures land in the chaos and immediately pick up weeds on the retrieve.

The fix: C3 Baits Flukenstein, Texas-rigged on an EWG hook. A weedless Texas-rig presentation gets the Flukenstein through the weed mats cleanly — you can fish right in the zone where the stripers and bass are blowing up on shad that have taken refuge in the weeds, without fouling every cast. This is the tactical adjustment that separates a productive day from a frustrating one on weedy fall Castaic water.

Live shad remains the top overall producer — 20 to 40 fish per session, all three bass species in the coves eating the plentiful baitfish. If you’re rigged for live shad, this pattern hasn’t changed and isn’t going to until the water gets significantly colder.

🛒 What to Have in Your Box This Week

The Weed Solution — Primary Tactical Call:

    • C3 Baits Flukenstein (available at retail shop) — Texas-rigged on an EWG hook; Jim’s specific call for fishing through the surface weed mats
    • EWG Hooks — The weedless presentation is the key; make sure you have the right hook for the Texas rig

    Live Bait:

    • Live Shad — Still the top producer; 20–40 fish per session for all three species

Topwater & Standard Presentations (Cleaner Water):

Location note: Start in the Ski Arm coves — cleaner water after the NE winds pushed debris toward the main lake and Fish Arm.

    ❓ Castaic Lake FAQ — October 2026

How do you fish through weeds at Castaic Lake right now?
Jim Taibi’s specific call this week: Texas-rig a C3 Baits Flukenstein on an EWG hook. The weedless presentation gets the bait through the surface weed mats where bass and stripers are blowing up on shad — without fouling on every cast. Treble-hook lures are mostly impractical in the heaviest weed sections right now.

Which arm of Castaic is fishing better this week?
The Ski Arm coves. NE winds pushed most of the floating algae and weed debris toward the main lake and Fish Arm. Start in the Ski Arm for cleaner conditions and less weed interference.

Is the fall bass bite still going at Castaic?
Yes — Jim got out twice during a high-wind week and found the bite unchanged. All three species — largemouth, smallmouth, and striped bass — are in the coves eating baitfish. Live shad is producing 20 to 40 fish per morning or afternoon session.

What are the current lake hours at Castaic?
Launch at 7:00 AM from the West Ramp only. Off water at 6:30 PM. Park opens at 6:00 AM. Lake is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
