Castaic Lake threw everything at anglers this week — high winds, rain, a significant water release that dropped the lake 10 to 15 feet, and a heavy algae bloom that came with it. It’s the kind of week where conditions win and the fish are tough to pattern. Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com got out on Friday in cold, windy conditions and found a way to put fish in the boat. Here’s what happened and what to expect heading into this week.

The combination of forces that hit Castaic this week fundamentally changed the lake’s setup in a short period of time. The water lords released 10 to 15 feet of water, which triggered a significant algae bloom and pushed surface action to a minimum. The expansive shallow weedbeds that had been holding massive baitfish schools all fall are now high and dry — exposed by the falling lake level. The shad and minnows that were living in those weeds have had to relocate to the remaining deeper weed sections in the coves.
The net result: Spotty fishing, minimal surface action, and fish that needed to be targeted differently than they have been all season.
The adjustment that produced fish: Standard Castaic dropshot rig, fished a little deeper, targeting the cleaner water away from the algae bloom. This is the technique that’s proven itself at Castaic in transitional conditions every year — when surface action disappears and visibility degrades, get a finesse presentation down to where the water is cleaner and let the fish find it.
Color matters more than usual this week. The stained water is the reason. Jim found that darker baits stood out significantly better in the algae-stained water — specifically:
→ C3 Baits Curly Sue — Oxblood — The dark profile cut through the stain and got attention when lighter colors didn’t
→ C3 Baits Slim Pro — Cinnamon — Wacky rigged on a dropshot; the top bait of the week even in tough conditions
→ 5″ Deps Sakamata Shad — Texas rigged — Produced fish when worked out from the shoreline in open water
Stripers were in the same areas as the bass — both species are following the remaining shallow baitfish concentrations, so don’t target them differently. Find the cleaner water in the coves, put the dropshot down in that zone, and expect both species to be present.
The outlook: Jim is cautiously optimistic. If the lake level stabilizes — and that’s the key variable — the water should clear up meaningfully and the bite should improve this week. He’ll be on the water Wednesday and will post a mid-week social media update with what he finds. Follow 661Fishing.com and Tackle Express on social to catch that update.

🛒 What to Have in Your Box This Week
The surface game is paused. This is a finesse week — get the right dropshot rig in the right water and fish the cleaner sections of the coves.
Dropshot — Primary Pattern:
- C3 Baits Slim Pro — Cinnamon — Wacky rigged on a dropshot; Jim’s top producer this week even in tough conditions
- C3 Baits Curly Sue — Oxblood — Dark color cutting through the algae stain; a different look when lighter colors aren’t drawing strikes
- Dropshot hooks, weights & fluorocarbon leader — Fish a little deeper than usual; find the cleaner water column
Open Water Presentation:
- 5″ Deps Sakamata Shad — Texas rigged, fished out from the shoreline in open water; produced fish this week alongside the dropshot
What’s not working right now:
Surface presentations are minimally productive until the algae clears. Patience and finesse is the play until conditions improve.

❓ Castaic Lake FAQ — Late October 2026
Why did Castaic Lake conditions change so quickly this week?
The lake managers released 10 to 15 feet of water, which dropped the lake level significantly and triggered a heavy algae bloom. The shallow weedbeds that were holding baitfish are now exposed and dry. It’s a temporary disruption — if the level stabilizes, Jim expects the water to clear and the bite to return.
What’s the best technique at Castaic Lake when there’s an algae bloom?
Dropshot rig fished deeper, targeting the cleaner water sections in the coves. Go to darker colored baits — the C3 Baits Curly Sue in Oxblood and Slim Pro in Cinnamon are Jim’s calls for stained water. Avoid the surface game until clarity improves.
When will the Castaic bite improve?
Jim’s expectation is this week, assuming the lake level stabilizes. He’ll be on the water Wednesday and will post a follow-up update on social media. Follow 661Fishing.com and Tackle Express for that mid-week update.
What time is off water at Castaic Lake in late October?
Off water is now 6:00 PM — the earliest of the season so far. Launch is at 7:00 AM. West Ramp only. Lake is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
