The result is a lake that's starting to look more like summer and fish that are beginning to act like it. 🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

The clearing water is already reshaping the bite — and in a way that's worth understanding before you go out.

The 20 to 30-foot zone is still holding the better fish during the day. Jim's read on this is smart: clearer water pushes fish deeper in the middle of the day. When visibility improves, bass get more cautious in the shallows and drop down to where the light doesn't penetrate as hard. Dropshot and Carolina rigs fished in this depth range are producing both numbers and size — the same reliable foundation that's been the backbone of the Castaic bite all season.

But here's the development worth getting excited about: Larger fish are starting to cruise the shoreline in the morning hours, actively looking for an easy meal. This is a direct result of the clearing water and the warming surface temps. If you've been running straight to deep structure every trip, add a morning shallow run to your game plan. The window is early — be on the water at first light and work the shoreline before the sun climbs.

The reaction bait bite is starting. This is the transition that signals the arrival of summer patterns at Castaic. Two and three-inch paddletail swimbaits on a 1/4 oz. ballhead jig got the attention of some solid fish for Jim's clients this week. That's a meaningful data point. Paddletails on a ballhead are a searching bait — they cover water, trigger reaction strikes, and appeal to aggressive, feeding fish. Here's the bigger picture. The algae that has been suppressing the topwater bite and limiting striper surface action all summer is on its way out. As high pressure settles in and the water fully clears over the coming days, the conditions that trigger the wolf pack topwater bass bite and the striper surface blow-ups will finally align. Shad are already positioned in ten to twenty feet of water. Bass are already starting to cruise shallow. Stripers are building toward a summer and fall bite that Jim expects to be significant.

The anglers who are ready before that window opens are the ones who have the best days on the water. The ones who wait until it's already happening are chasing it.

🐟 Striped Bass

The striper situation is slowly evolving in the right direction. Surface action has been minimal — the lingering algae has been the primary suppressor — but Jim's expectation is that the algae will be largely gone in the coming days, and with it, the conditions the topwater striper bite needs.
