Castaic Lake Fishing Report – July 12, 2026

The water at Castaic is looking better than it has all summer. The Fish Arm is running mostly algae-free following the copper sulfate treatment earlier this month, and the shad schools are responding — pushing shallower every single day and positioning themselves exactly where they need to be to trigger one of the most anticipated bites of the year. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com was on the water this week with the full July 12th report. Here's where things stand.

🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

The depth picture at Castaic is shifting — and that shift is telling you something important about where this bite is headed.

The primary zone is still 20 to 30 feet, where finesse plastics on dropshot and Carolina rigs are producing both numbers and quality fish. Main lake points and secondary points are holding the most fish right now and should be your starting spots on every trip. Work the structure methodically in that depth range before moving on.

But here's what's new this week: Activity in the five to ten foot range is increasing. That's a meaningful change. Fish moving shallower in clear, post-treatment water is not random — it tracks with the shad schools pushing up and bass beginning to stage ahead of what Jim is expecting to be topwater cove action in the coming days. Don't ignore the shallow zone, especially early in the morning when light is low and fish are more willing to commit on the banks.

The baits producing right now are the Castaic standards Jim has been on all season. The C3 Baits Prototype 1 Worm in Purple Haze on a dropshot and the C3 Baits Slim Pro in Cinnamon on a dropshot are the setups delivering the most consistent bites — particularly in areas with stained water where those warmer color profiles stand out. Jim specifically calls out Purple Haze on the worms and Cinnamon on the Slim Pros as the color combination to be on right now. If you've been rotating through colors, narrow it down to these two and stay on them.

The shad push is the story to watch. Shad schools are getting shallower every day and Jim expects them to push into the backs of the major coves soon — and when they do, the wolf pack topwater bass bite that Castaic is known for in the summer months will follow. This is not a maybe. This is a when. The conditions are lined up and the bait is moving into position. Have topwater gear in the rod box on every trip from this point forward. You don't want to be the angler who watches it happen with nothing tied on.

🐟 Striped Bass

A few blow-ups are starting to materialize in the right places at the right times, but the striper topwater bite hasn't locked in yet as the lake continues to clear. It's progress — more than last week — but Jim's characterization is accurate: there isn't enough consistency to target stripers on top with any reliability just yet. That's changing. When the schools commit, the window can open and close fast — and the angler who already has the right bait in the water is the one who makes the most of it.
