The bite has flipped almost entirely to the surface, the coves are loaded with bass stacked behind massive baitfish schools, and the heat that typically kills the mid-day bite actually kept fish active all day heading into the weekend. 🎣 Largemouth Bass

The surface bite is at 90%. That's not a figure of speech — Jim's characterization this week is that bottom-contact techniques like the dropshot rig are producing almost nothing while the topwater action has taken over nearly every productive area on the lake. If you're still fishing the bottom, you're fishing the wrong game right now.

Here's why: there are literally hundreds of thousands of three-inch shad that have pushed into water as shallow as three feet. The backs of the bigger coves are holding dozens — in some cases hundreds — of bass that have followed those massive bait schools right to the bank. Add cloud cover and triple-digit heat heading into the weekend, and the conditions were rare enough to produce an all-day topwater bite. That almost never happens at Castaic in August. If you were on the water this week, you know.

Lure size has shifted up. Earlier in the month the smaller profile baits were leading the cove bite — the one to two-inch shad profile was the call and smaller lures were winning. That's changed. The shad in most areas are now running two to four inches, and the bigger baits are getting more bites than their smaller counterparts.

Work the backs of the bigger coves. Cast into the bait schools. The fish are there in numbers and they're aggressive.

🐟 Striped Bass

Striper boils continued all week around Center Point and down toward Elizabeth Canyon. The same baits catching largemouth are connecting with stripers — Fishus Espetit 95s and Lucky Craft Gunfish 115s — and the fish are averaging a solid five pounds.

One detail worth knowing: the bigger concentrated boils that were showing throughout August have spread out. Jim's read is that the stripers and the largemouth are now working the same areas simultaneously, which is pushing the bait schools apart and distributing the surface action across a wider area. That means fewer of the massive single-school explosions and more scattered surface activity throughout the coves.

The shallow water detail is significant. Jim is seeing stripers as shallow as three feet, chasing shad over grass flats. Cast at any surface splash — it might be a bass, but it might also be a five-pound striper. Have the right bait on and be ready for either.
