🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

The transition into the summer and fall pattern continues. Bass are pushing baitfish from the main lake toward the backs of the bigger coves, and the bulk of the quality action is happening on topwater during the low-light windows — early morning and evening.

A few fish are still being caught on bottom-contact techniques like the dropshot rig and football jigs, but that's not where most anglers are finding success right now. If you want to be in the right game, be in the coves on topwater first and last thing.

The baitfish are still small — 1 to 2 inches — and your lure selection needs to reflect that. Throwing big topwater baits right now is working against you. The three baits Jim keeps going back to:

→ MegaBass Karashi — Small profile, matching the bait size perfectly
→ Jackall 007 Riser Bait — Consistent producer during low-light cove sessions
→ C3 Baits Flukenstein — Earning bites when larger options are getting ignored

Run these in the coves with deep water access. Stay mobile with the bait schools. Early and late are your windows — commit to them.

🐟 Striped Bass

This is the section that should have every Castaic striper angler paying close attention.

Boils are now showing consistently from the West Ramp all the way down to the main launch ramp along the jet ski buoy line. Jim counted three separate schools active at nearly the same time — and they weren't small fish. One school was running two to three pound fish while the others were in the five to six pound range. The striper bite at Castaic has officially arrived in a significant way.

Best time window for topwater striper action: 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. That's a change from the typical early morning topwater expectations — plan your day around it.

Baits to have rigged: Jim is specific this week —

→ Fishus Espetit 95 — White or any version of white
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 95 — White, any version
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 115 — White, any version

White is the color call. These fish are chasing smaller baitfish and white matches the profile. Long-casting ability matters in open water — all three of these baits are built for it.

For anglers who prefer a different approach — two additional options are producing:

→ Cut sardines at the Elderberry buoy line — The morning bite before the sun gets high is the most productive window for this approach. Park, anchor up, and wait for the schools to move through. Patient presentation, but it's putting fish on the line daily.

→ Alabama rigs and trolling flies in the 20 to 30-foot zone — Jim reports action for trollers working the same areas as the boils and at the mouths of the bigger coves in the Fish Arm. This is worth knowing if you prefer to stay mobile and cover water rather than waiting on surface action.
