Castaic Lake Report 08-31-2025

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:

Triple digit air temps and falling water levels spurred a medium algae bloom that kept some of the surface action to a minimum mid-week, reducing what were good boils to simmers. There is still action to be had once the wind starts blowing, sometimes not til late morning. Small topwater baits like Bait Merchant custom Riser Bait 007’s, Megabass Karashi’s and smaller Zoom Flukes continue to dominate this bite. Dropshot rigs will provide action along steep walls and main-lake points in the twenty foot depth range once the surface bite subsides. The C3 Baits Co. finesse sized offerings or Bait Merchant Caligators and worms in the Neptune Shad pattern continue their dominance practically anytime of day. Five inch Senko’s and C3 Baits Slim Pro’s are also getting a few grabs. A few jig and crankbait fish are also being caught by anglers finding the right bite windows.

Striped Bass:

Surface boils were sporadic with the less than ideal water conditions in the Ski Arm. There have been a lot of boils in the morning, unfortunately they are mostly out of reach on the other side of the forebay buoy line. The same Lucky Craft Gunfish 100’s and Espetit 95’s remain the go-to choices because of their greater casting distance. Good color choices are Ghost Minnow for the Gunfish and White Flash for the Espetit. Staying mobile and hanging around the entrance to some of the deeper coves are a good strategy. Luck is also playing a big part in individual angler success. Right place, right time.

Bluegill:

‘Gills continue  biting near overhanging green bushes that provide shade in the backs of coves like Dry Gulch, Hawks Nest and Utopia.
