Castaic Lake Report 08-24-2025
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
Temps well above triple digits kept some of the surface action to a minimum this week, as most species kept their feeding to an hour or two with the 80+ degree surface temps. Small topwater baits like Bait Merchant custom Riser Bait 007βs, Megabass Karashiβs and tiny Zoom Flukes connected with good numbers of bass to three pounds. Casting into a splash circle within three seconds or so is a good way to rack up some better numbers as these are aggressive fish, usually feeding in small groups. Dropshot rigs fished along steep walls and main-lake points in the five to twenty foot depth range is the go-to technique once the surface bite subsides. C3 Baits Shimmyβs and Jobuβs or Bait Merchant Caligators all in the Neptune Shad pattern are providing good action just about anytime of day. Wacky rigged five inch Senkoβs and C3 Baits Slim Proβs are still getting quality bites fished in the same areas. A few crankbait fish are also being caught on medium divers in Shad patterns.
Striped Bass:
Surface boils continue around the main Ski Arm, the island, and the forebay buoy line area. Most schools are the larger grade of fish in the six to seven pound range, but there has been some action on smaller βschooliesβ in the two pound class being caught as well. Lucky Craft Gunfish 100βs and Espetit 95βs remain the go-to choices because of their greater casting distance. Good color choices are Ghost Minnow for the Gunfish and White Flash for the Espetit. The bite has been predominantly first thing in the morning and continues in some degreeΒ until the sun gets high around 11 or 12.
Bluegill:
βGills continueΒ biting near overhanging green bushes that provide shade in the backs of coves like Dry Gulch, Hawks Nest and Utopia. A small piece of red worm or meal worm will get bit all day. Great fun for the kids as it is a very visual bite and easy to do.
