Megabass Karashi’s, small poppers, SPRO Phat Flys and tiny Zoom Flukes will work on this detailed bite. Don’t blind cast, just be ready to cast into a splash circle within three seconds or so and you’ll get bit almost every time. Once the surface bite dwindles, a dropshot rig fished along steep walls and main-lake points in the five to twenty foot depth range is hard to beat. Any of the C3 finesse baits or Bait Merchant Caligators are a good choice in just about any of the popular colors.

No blind casting, just waiting for the fish to show themselves, then casting into the splash circle within a few seconds. Once the surface bite subsides, switch over to a dropshot rig and fish along steep walls and main-lake points in the five to twenty five foot depth range. C3 Baits Shimmy’s and Bait Merchant Caligators continue to top the list of productive baits. Wacky rigged Senko’s and C3 Baits Slim Pro’s fished in the same areas are producing some quality fish to three pounds.

Bass fishing slowed down slightly this week as far as the early surface bite was concerned. An algae bloom and water fluctuations probably accounted for most Bass feeding sub-surface for a few days. Dropshot rigs fished along steep walls and main-lake points in the five to twenty five foot depth range accounted for the most fish overall, with C3 Baits Shimmy’s and Bait Merchant Caligators topping the list of productive baits.

Surface boils in the Ski Arm around the island and up to the forebay buoy line have become more frequent, with big schools of six pound class fish slashing surface baits with aggression. Ghost Minnow pattern Lucky Craft Gunfish 100’s and Espetit 95’s in the White Flash pattern have been very productive.

A few boils seen in the Ski Arm around the island towards the weekend, but they’re only lasting for a few minutes. There are big schools of six pound class fish along with some jumbos pushing the double-digit range. This bite is about to explode, which it almost always does in August.

Bait Merchant 007 Riser Baits and C3 Baits Flukensteins typically dominate the surface bite year after year, with Lucky Craft Pointers in the 78 and 100 size picking up the slack once the surface bite wanes and the fish recede to the five to ten foot depth range. Live Shad continue to provide explosive surface action throughout the day for those willing and able to net them.

The great Bass fishing continued this week with most Smallmouth and Largemouth averaging one to three pounds. Some bigger fish in the five to seven pound range are consistently showing in the counts, as the wolf packs of bigger fish are chasing Shad schools around main-lake points and cove entrance areas. Keep moving from spot to spot until you intercept the fish.

The Stripers are still not full strength as of yet, with only a few boils on some days. Bait Merchant 007 Riser Baits, LuckyCraft Gunfish and Espetit’s will call these fish up to the surface if you find the schools. There are huge schools of six pound fish and smaller schools of two pounders as well.

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass: Good Bass fishing most days as we get past the spawn for the Bass and Shad. Smallmouth and Largemouth averaging one to two pound are making up the bulk of the counts. Standard soft plastics presentations with just about any of the C3 Baits are still effective, but there has been a shift to surface activity and reaction style fishing. 007 Riser Baits, surface poppers and Flukes are getting the attention of some bigger fish along with hard jerkbaits like Lucky Craft Pointer 78’s and 100’s. Fishing with Live Shad is producing some three to five pound fish as they start hunting Shad in wolf packs of ten to twenty fish. Striped Bass: The Stripers are starting to show on the surface but the bite is not full strength as of yet. 007 size Bait Merchant Riser Baits, Lucky Craft Gunfish and Espetit’s will all work if you are lucky enough to be near some boils. The schools of baitfish are heading into coves like Elizabeth Canyon, and there has been some feeding fish around. As the Stripers prepare to spawn there will be non-biting fish on the surface that look like they’re boiling but are going thru the spawning cycle. Unlike the Largemouth and Smallmouth that lay their eggs in a nest, Stripers are broadcast spawners like most ocean fish.
