Tuna Reels

Penn Fathom II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reels give offshore anglers the speed to find line and the low-gear control to finish a hard fight. With the current range covering 25 through 80 sizes, this conventional lever-drag platform is built for serious saltwater work, from nearshore targets to heavy offshore applications.

Speed When You Need It, Power When It Counts

The Quick Shift II 2-speed system lets you change gears when the fight changes. Use high gear to pick up line quickly, then shift down when a tuna, yellowtail, or other powerful saltwater fish digs deep. Pull-to-Turn preset drag adjustment helps keep your chosen setting consistent while you work.

What This Reel Solves Offshore

Heavy tackle can feel bulky, while a single-speed reel forces a compromise between fast retrieve and winching power. The Fathom II combines both priorities in one rigid, full-metal conventional reel, with line-capacity rings for a quick read and a double-dog ratchet anti-reverse for dependable engagement.

Best For

• Offshore trolling for tuna and yellowtail
• Nearshore and offshore live-bait or bait fishing
• Heavy conventional setups where gear changes matter
• Long runs, deep fights, and situations that demand line pickup plus cranking control
• Right- and left-hand retrieve needs across the current 25–80 size range

Key Features

• Quick Shift II 2-speed system
• Full-metal body and sideplate construction
• One-piece frame with palm sideplate for rigidity and reduced weight
• Pull-to-Turn preset drag adjustment
• Dura-Drag washers for smooth, consistent pressure
• Stainless steel main and pinion gears
• Five shielded stainless steel ball bearings
• Double-dog ratchet anti-reverse
• Line-capacity rings for quick visual reference
• Removable top spacer bar and lugs on 60 and 80 sizes only

Models & Specs

These are the current selectable variants. Use the exact model code when comparing capacity, retrieve direction, and drag range.

Mono capacity highlights: The 25NLD2 and 25NLD2LH list 330/20, 300/25, or 245/30. The 30LD2 and 30LD2LH list 405/25, 330/30, or 255/40. The 40NLD2 models list 410/30, 315/40, or 235/50, while the 60NLD2 and 80LD2 extend into heavier line classes.

Choose the Right Current Model

Choose the 25NLD2 or 25NLD2LH for a compact heavy-duty option with right- or left-hand retrieve. Move to the 30LD2 or 30LD2LH for more line capacity while keeping the same 33-pound maximum drag. Choose the 40NLD2 or 40NLD2LH when 40 pounds of maximum drag and a faster high gear fit the plan. Step up to the 60NLD2 or 80LD2 when capacity, heavier line, and low-gear control take priority.

Complete the Offshore Setup

Pair this reel with Phenix Black Diamond Conventional Rods for a purpose-built conventional outfit. If you want a similar Penn platform without the two-speed system, compare the Penn Fathom II Single Speed Lever Drag Reels. For a different retrieve style, see the Penn Fathom II Star Drag Reels.

Tackle Express Tips

• Set the preset drag before the bite, then use the lever for controlled adjustments rather than making large changes mid-fight.
• Use high gear to pick up slack and low gear when the fish turns heavy or the fight moves deep.
• Match line class and capacity to the target, and verify handle direction before adding the reel to your rig.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the benefit of the 2-speed system?
It lets you switch between a faster retrieve for line pickup and a lower gear for added cranking control during a heavy fight.

Shimano SpeedMaster II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reels give offshore anglers a practical way to switch from fast line pickup to low-gear cranking power. With an all-metal body, carbon drag, four bearings, and two-speed gearing, this family is built for deep-water bottom fishing, light trolling, and yellowtail or tuna trips where pressure and control matter.

Choose from six listed sizes: 8 II, 10 II, 12 II, 16 II, 20 II, and 25 II. The smaller sizes keep a lighter profile for nearshore work, while the larger models add line capacity and higher maximum drag for deeper water and bigger fish. Confirmed technical rows for SPM12II through SPM25II are shown below; the 8 II and 10 II variants are available, but corresponding technical values were not included in the supplied specification data.

Why Two Speeds Earn Their Keep

Use the high gear when you need quick line pickup, then shift into low gear when a fish gets deep and every turn of the handle needs more leverage. The lever drag gives you a repeatable way to manage pressure during the fight. The trade-off is extra weight and a more involved reel than a single-speed model, but that added control pays off when deep-water cranking power matters.

The Right Pick If...

• You want one conventional reel family for deep-water bottom fishing and light trolling.
• You want low-gear leverage for bigger fish without giving up fast pickup in high gear.
• You are comparing yellowtail and tuna setups and need to match reel size to line capacity.
• You prefer a rigid metal-bodied reel with lever-drag control over a lighter single-speed design.

Best Techniques & Conditions

The SpeedMaster II is a strong fit for nearshore and offshore trips, especially deep-water bottom fishing and light trolling. Use high gear when you need to recover line quickly, and shift to low gear when depth, current, or a hard-running fish makes each crank count. For yellowtail or tuna, compare the capacity tables with your planned mono or PowerPro braid before choosing a size.

Tackle Express Tips

• Plan the spool first: Start with the line capacity table, then choose the smallest model that gives you the reserve you need.
• Use the gears with purpose: High gear is for pickup; low gear is for controlled pressure and deep-water cranking.
• Match the rod: Pair the reel with a conventional rod rated for your line class and technique rather than choosing by reel size alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shimano Trinidad A Star Drag Reels are built for anglers who want long casts, a compact frame, and confident control in serious saltwater. The Trinidad A combines Shimano's MagnumLite spool, HEG gearing, X-Ship support, Dartainium II drag, and corrosion-conscious construction for surface iron, live bait, heavy jigs, and offshore work.

Choose from the 12A, 14A, 16A, and 20A sizes. This is the reel you reach for when casting distance matters, the current is moving, and the next fish may be a yellowtail, tuna, white seabass, halibut, rockfish, or lingcod.

When Casting Distance Is the Whole Game

The Trinidad A is designed around a lighter, more compact profile and a free-running spool, so surface iron and live bait can travel without making the outfit feel bulky. The trade-off is that this is a specialized star-drag casting reel rather than a two-speed lever-drag workhorse. Choose it when effortless casting, direct power, and a refined retrieve matter more than low-gear cranking.

The Shimano Tranx 500 Baitcast Reel is built for anglers who refuse to compromise. Whether you're dropping irons on yellowtail, slow-rolling swimbaits on white seabass, or grinding deep structure for trophy bass, the Tranx 500 delivers the torque, drag, and durability to handle it all — in both saltwater and freshwater.

Built for the Tranx 500 Angler

The Tranx 500 fills the gap between a standard baitcaster and a conventional reel. It's compact enough to cast all day, yet powerful enough to stop a 60 lb yellowtail in its tracks. With 25 lbs of Cross Carbon Drag and a super-strong levelwind, this reel is engineered for the moments that matter most.

Why the Tranx 500 Stands Apart

Most baitcasters sacrifice either power or smoothness. The Tranx 500 refuses to choose. HAGANE Body construction keeps the frame rigid under load, while MicroModule Gear technology delivers a silky-smooth retrieve even after years of hard use. X-Ship reduces gear friction for more torque and longer casts — a combination you simply won't find at this price point.

HG or PG — Pick Your Weapon

The HG (High Gear, 6.6:1) retrieves 43 inches per crank — ideal for working irons, Waxwings, Rapala X-Raps, and any technique where faster line recovery keeps your lure in the zone. The PG (Power Gear, 4.6:1) retrieves 30 inches per crank, delivering maximum torque for deep cranking, heavy swimbaits, and turning big fish away from structure. Both models share the same 25 lb max drag and 6+1 bearing system.

The Right Pick If...

• You target yellowtail, white seabass, tuna, or large calico bass
• You need a baitcaster that can handle 65–100 lb braid
• You want one reel that works from the kelp to the deep reef
• You're upgrading from a standard baitcaster and need more stopping power
• You fish heavy swimbaits, irons, or large topwater lures

Best Fishing Techniques

• Iron fishing — HG model excels at fast retrieves with jigs and irons
• Swimbait fishing — PG model delivers the torque to work large paddle tails and glide baits
• Deep cranking — PG's power gear ratio grinds through resistance at depth
• Topwater — HG keeps pace with walk-the-dog and prop baits
• Live bait — smooth drag and levelwind handle live mackerel and sardine presentations

Best Conditions

• Offshore and nearshore saltwater — kelp beds, reefs, and open water
• Freshwater reservoirs and lakes targeting trophy bass and stripers
• Boat fishing where casting distance and line capacity matter
• High-pressure situations where drag consistency is non-negotiable

Line Capacity

Tackle Express Tips

• Spool with PowerPro Maxcuatro: The Tranx 500's large spool capacity shines with 65–80 lb Maxcuatro — you get incredible sensitivity, zero stretch, and enough capacity for deep water drops.
• Match the gear ratio to your technique: Don't default to HG just because it's faster. If you're fishing heavy swimbaits or grinding deep structure, the PG's torque advantage will save your wrist and turn more fish.
• Rinse after every saltwater session: Despite its saltwater rating, a quick freshwater rinse of the levelwind and handle knobs after each trip will dramatically extend the life of this reel.

FAQ

What's the difference between the HG and PG models?
The HG (High Gear, 6.6:1) retrieves 43 inches per crank — best for fast-moving lures like irons and topwater. The PG (Power Gear, 4.6:1) retrieves 30 inches per crank with more torque — best for heavy swimbaits, deep cranking, and turning big fish.

Can the Tranx 500 handle saltwater fishing?
Yes. The Tranx 500 is built for both saltwater and freshwater use. Its HAGANE Body and Cross Carbon Drag system are designed to withstand the corrosive demands of saltwater environments. Rinse after each use for best longevity.

What line do you recommend for the Tranx 500?
We recommend PowerPro Maxcuatro in 65–80 lb for most saltwater applications. For freshwater or lighter inshore work, 30–50 lb braid is a great choice. The large spool handles high-capacity loads with ease.

Built for anglers who demand maximum line capacity, 30 lb drag, and a full aluminum frame in a baitcasting platform, the Daiwa Lexa 500 HD is a heavy-duty conventional-style baitcasting reel engineered for saltwater and freshwater big-game applications — tuna, yellowtail, calico bass, white seabass, and any situation where you need serious line capacity and drag power in a baitcasting form factor. The aluminum frame and side cover provide a rigid, corrosion-resistant foundation that maintains precise gear mesh under the sustained loads of hard-fighting fish.

MagForce cast control delivers smooth, precise casting across a wide range of lure weights without manual adjustment, while the stainless steel drive gear ensures long-lasting performance under heavy load. The Ultimate Tournament Drag (UTD) system provides consistent, smooth drag pressure up to 30 lbs, and the 130mm swept handle delivers the leverage needed to work large lures and fight powerful fish. Available in 5 gear ratio options from 5.1:1 (Power) to 8.1:1 (Extra-High), including a left-hand retrieve model.

Shimano Talica A Two-Speed Lever Drag Reels are built for the moment a strong fish sounds and a single-speed reel runs out of answers. Push-button shifting gives you high-gear line pickup when a tuna runs toward the boat, then low-gear leverage when the fight turns deep and heavy.

The six-size lineup covers SoCal bait fishing, yo-yo iron, sinker rigs, flat-fall and knife jigs, kite fishing, trolling, and long-range saltwater. Match the reel to the line class you actually fish, then use the size guide below to choose the capacity you need.

Two Speeds for the Part of the Fight That Gets Hard

High gear helps you recover line quickly, work a surface iron, and stay connected when a fish changes direction. Low gear gives you more leverage after a fish sounds under the boat. You can shift under load without backing off the drag, which is the advantage that separates this family from a single-speed conventional reel.

What the Talica A Redesign Adds

Models & Size Guide

All six listed sizes are right-hand retrieve. Use the size, line-class, and technique guidance together rather than choosing by fish name alone.

Line Capacity Reference

The following PowerPro capacity figures are confirmed in the current listing. Capacities are shown as line weight/yards.

Best Species, Techniques & Conditions

• Bluefin and yellowtail: Sinker rigs, flylined sardines or mackerel, and yo-yo iron.
• Deep-water jigging: Flat-fall and knife jigs around 200–400 feet, especially with the 20IIA and 25IIA.
• Kite and trolling work: The 25IIA, 40IIA, and 50IIA for heavier offshore presentations.
• Trips: Catalina and Channel Islands runs, 1.5-day and long-range boats, private sportfishers, and Baja saltwater trips.

The Right Pick If...

• You want both fast line pickup and low-gear cranking leverage.
• You fish bluefin on a sinker rig and need a reel that can handle the turn from open water to deep pressure.
• You want a 12IIA or 16IIA for lighter tuna and yellowtail work, or a 20IIA and up for heavier long-range applications.
• You prefer a lever drag with an included light-line cam for more gradual pressure on lighter line.

Tackle Express Tips

• Set strike drag with a scale: Roughly one-third of your topshot's rated breaking strength is a sensible starting point for bait fishing.
• Shift before you are exhausted: Move to low gear when the fish stops running and starts circling, rather than waiting until the rod is fully loaded.
• Protect the reel after the trip: Rinse with low-pressure fresh water, back the lever off for storage, and service the two-speed mechanism regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Talica A size is best for bluefin tuna?

The 20IIA is the lineup's practical starting point for many bluefin sinker-rig applications. The 25IIA adds more 65 lb. PowerPro capacity for longer-range work, while the 12IIA and 16IIA fit lighter 30 lb. class fishing.

What is the difference between the Talica A and older Talica II?

The A series adds Infinity Drive, Cross Carbon Drag, X-Protect water resistance, and an included Light-Line Drag Cam. It is a mechanical redesign rather than a cosmetic update.

Is the Talica A available in left-hand retrieve?

The Accurate Ascender Star Drag Reel brings Accurate's legendary TwinStarDrag® technology into a lightweight, USA-made conventional package. Whether you're casting iron for yellowtail, soaking live bait for tuna, or working the bottom for striped bass, this reel delivers smooth, consistent drag pressure with the durability anglers expect from Accurate.

Where Standard Star Drags Fall Short

Most conventional star drag reels apply drag pressure from a single side of the main gear. Under sustained load, that creates uneven wear and heat buildup that degrades smoothness over time. The Ascender's patented TwinStarDrag® system applies stainless steel and carbon fiber washers on both sides of the main gear — distributing pressure evenly, running cooler, and maintaining consistency across multiple runs. It's the same core drag philosophy as Accurate's lever drag lineup, now in a star drag format.

Built on the Ascender Platform

• TwinStarDrag® system — dual-sided drag application on the main gear, up to 24 lbs max drag depending on model
• 6061 T-6 aircraft-grade aluminum with CVX® frame — rigid, lightweight, built in the USA
• Xtreme Casting Technology® (XCT) — centrifugal cast control system reduces backlash and extends casting distance
• Main Gear Bearing Support (MBS) — reduces flex in the gear train under high drag loads
• 6 ABEC 3 ball bearings + 1 roller bearing — ultra-smooth retrieve
• Stainless steel gears — corrosion-resistant, built for saltwater
• Aluminum power arm with rubber football knob — solid cranking feel
• Spool lock mechanism — secures the spool during transport or rigging

Tackle Express Tips

• The AX-300X and AX-400X are the go-to sizes for local kelp and island trips targeting yellowtail on live bait or iron. Light enough to cast all day, enough drag to turn fish on 30–40 lb braid.
• The XN (narrow) models (500XN, 600XN) hold less line but are more compact and better balanced on lighter rods. If you're fishing 50–65 lb braid on a shorter stick, the XN is worth the tradeoff.
• Before your first salt trip, back the star drag off completely and re-set it under load — it seats the drag washers evenly and gives you a more accurate feel for where your drag pressure settings actually are.

FAQ

What's the difference between the X and XN models?
The XN (narrow) variants have a smaller spool capacity and a more compact profile. They're ideal when you don't need full line capacity but want a lighter, better-balanced reel on a medium-action rod.

Is the Ascender Star Drag made in the USA?
Yes. Accurate manufactures their reels in the USA, and the Ascender Star Drag is no exception. That's part of what justifies the price point over import alternatives.

How does TwinStarDrag® differ from a standard star drag?
Standard star drags apply pressure from one side of the main gear. TwinStarDrag® applies stainless and carbon fiber drag washers on both sides simultaneously — distributing heat and pressure evenly for smoother, more consistent performance under sustained load.

Wide-Profile Two-Speed Power for Trophy Offshore Fish

The Avet HX 5/2 Raptor Plus MC 2 Speed Reel is built for anglers who want wide-profile capacity, serious cranking leverage, and the confidence to stay connected when a trophy fish digs deep. Its 5.0:1 high gear helps recover line and work a presentation, while the 2.4:1 low gear gives you the leverage to keep turning during a long fight.

Picture the moment a big tuna settles into a deep run. The HX 5/2 Raptor Plus MC gives you a solid, controlled platform, a smooth lever drag, and the low-gear authority to keep pressure steady instead of fighting the reel. Precision-machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, stainless steel components, and a multi-color anodized finish make it a purpose-built tool for demanding saltwater work. Made in the USA.

When More Line Capacity and More Leverage Matter

The wide HX profile is the right move when a compact reel does not provide enough room or power for your plan. Choose it for long-range trips, deep-water presentations, and trophy-class tuna or billfish where a fish may take line before you can turn it. The 2-speed system lets you fish fast when the opportunity opens up, then slow down and grind when the fight gets heavy.

Fast Recovery, Heavy-Fish Control

• 5.0:1 high gear: Gain line on running fish and work or recover lures efficiently.
• 2.4:1 low gear: Apply deliberate cranking power when a fish sounds or makes a deep run.
• Smooth shifting: Move between speeds as the fight changes instead of forcing one gear to do everything.
• Lever drag control: Make quick, precise pressure adjustments while keeping your attention on the fish.

The Right Pick If...

• You fish for giant bluefin, yellowfin tuna, marlin, sailfish, or other trophy offshore species.
• You want a wide-profile reel for long-range trips and maximum line capacity.
• You need a 2-speed setup that can move quickly and still deliver low-gear leverage.
• You fish deep-water jigs or heavy tackle for large yellowtail and white seabass.
• You prefer the distinctive MC multi-color anodized finish and a choice of right- or left-hand models.

Best Techniques and Conditions

• Long-range live bait: Use high gear to recover line during a fast run, then shift low when the fish settles into a deep pull.
• Deep-water jigging: The wide profile gives you a serious platform for deep presentations, while the two speeds help manage both retrieve and hookup pressure.
• Heavy offshore bait and trolling: Choose the HX 5/2 when large fish, long runs, and demanding saltwater conditions call for added capacity and leverage.
• Trophy billfish: Keep pressure smooth and deliberate, using low gear when the fish turns into a sustained, heavy fight.

Extra-Wide Two-Speed Power for Maximum Line Capacity

The Avet HXW 5/2 Raptor Plus Non-MC 2 Speed Reel is built for trophy anglers who need an extra-wide platform, serious line capacity, and the leverage to stay in control when large offshore fish go deep. Its 5.0:1 high gear helps recover line and work lures, while the 2.4:1 low gear gives you the cranking power to keep pressure on the biggest fish.

When a long-range hookup turns into a sustained offshore battle, the HXW profile gives you room for the heavy braid and mono these applications demand. The massive spool, Raptor carbon fiber drag, CNC-machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum frame, stainless steel components, and corrosion-resistant finish are designed for bluefin, yellowfin, marlin, sailfish, large yellowtail, and other trophy gamefish. This is the No-MC configuration, made in California.

When Extra-Wide Capacity Earns Its Keep

The HXW 5/2 Raptor Plus is the right pick when maximum line capacity is central to the plan. Choose it for long-range trips, deep-water jigging, and trophy fish that can take line before you have a chance to turn them. The wide profile also gives you a substantial platform for heavy tackle and long, demanding fights.

Two Speeds, One Serious Offshore Job

• 5.0:1 high gear: Gain line on running fish and work or recover lures efficiently.
• 2.4:1 low gear: Apply maximum cranking power when a trophy fish sounds or stays deep.
• Smooth shifting: Change speeds as the fight moves from line recovery to heavy pressure.
• Raptor drag: Use smooth, consistent pressure through long battles.

The Right Pick If...

• You target giant bluefin, yellowfin, marlin, sailfish, large yellowtail, or other trophy offshore species.
• You need an extra-wide reel for maximum line capacity on long-range fishing trips.
• You fish heavy braid or mono and want a large spool for deep-water and big-game applications.
• You prefer direct No-MC cast-control performance.
• You want right- or left-hand retrieve options in a USA-made Raptor Plus platform.

Best Techniques and Conditions

• Long-range live bait: Use high gear to recover line during a run, then shift low when the fish settles into a deep pull.
• Deep-water jigging: Take advantage of the large spool and low gear when a heavy fish needs to be worked up from depth.
• Kite fishing and offshore bait: The extra-wide platform suits long runs and heavy line systems for trophy yellowfin and tuna.
• Heavy trolling: Use low gear for leverage when a marlin or sailfish turns a fast run into a close-range grind.

Specifications

The Penn Fathom Two Speed Conventional Reel (Original Black & Gold) is the proven workhorse that serious saltwater anglers have trusted for years. When you need to crank a big fish up from depth, switch gears mid-fight, or grind through a long bottom session without your reel giving out — this is the reel built for that job. It's not flashy. It's built to work.

Why Buy the Penn Fathom 2-Speed?

The Fathom 2-Speed gives you the mechanical advantage of two gear ratios in one compact, full-metal reel. When a big fish runs, you stay in high gear. When it's time to grind it up from depth, you drop to low gear and crank. That versatility — combined with Penn's legendary Dura-Drag system and stainless steel gear train — makes this one of the most capable conventional reels at its price point.

Main Use & Benefit

Designed for offshore and nearshore saltwater fishing where depth, drag pressure, and gear durability matter. The two-speed mechanism is the core benefit — it lets you fight fish efficiently at any depth without burning out your arms or losing control of the battle.

Problem It Solves

Single-speed conventional reels force you to choose between fast retrieval and cranking power. The Fathom 2-Speed eliminates that compromise. Drop into low gear when a big fish is pinned deep, then shift to high gear to recover line fast when it runs toward the boat. One reel handles both scenarios.

Advantages Over Disadvantages

• ✅ Two-speed mechanism gives mechanical advantage at depth — no single-speed reel can match this for deep-water fights
• ✅ Full metal body and sideplates maintain gear alignment under extreme load
• ✅ Penn Dura-Drag delivers consistent, heat-resistant drag pressure across long fights
• ✅ Stainless steel main gear, pinion gear, and gear train built for long-term durability
• ✅ Classic black and gold Penn styling — a proven, trusted design
• ⚠️ Heavier than single-speed spinning reels — not ideal for light finesse applications
• ⚠️ Lever drag requires familiarity — new anglers may need a short learning curve

When to Choose It

Choose the Penn Fathom 2-Speed when you're targeting species at depth, fishing heavy live bait, or need a reel that can handle sustained drag pressure over a long fight. It's the right call for deep-drop bottom fishing, offshore jigging, live bait fishing for large pelagics, and any situation where cranking power matters more than casting distance.

Best Fishing Techniques

• Deep-drop bottom fishing — low gear cranking power to bring fish up from depth
• Slow-pitch and speed jigging — high gear for fast jig retrieves, low gear for grinding up big fish
• Live bait fishing — smooth lever drag for controlled freespool and precise strike settings
• Light trolling — consistent drag pressure for pelagic species
• Vertical jigging — compact size and two-speed versatility ideal for working jigs at depth

Best Conditions

• Offshore and nearshore saltwater environments
• Deep-water structure fishing (reefs, ledges, wrecks)
• Kelp beds and rocky inshore structure
• Party boat and charter boat fishing
• Any situation requiring sustained drag pressure and gear durability

Best For

• Techniques: Deep-drop bottom fishing, slow-pitch jigging, speed jigging, live bait fishing, light trolling, vertical jigging
• Species: Yellowtail, halibut, tuna, calico bass, rockfish, lingcod, white seabass, grouper, snapper

Tackle Express Tips

• Use the low gear to save your arms on deep drops — When you're fishing 200+ feet of water for rockfish, lingcod, or halibut, drop into low gear as soon as the fish is hooked and grind it up steadily. Fighting a big fish in high gear at depth is exhausting and increases the chance of losing it. Let the reel's mechanical advantage do the work.
• Set your strike and full drag positions before you drop — The lever drag system lets you pre-set both your strike drag and full drag positions. Do this before every drop so you're not fumbling with settings when a fish hits. A good rule of thumb: set strike drag at about 25–30% of your line's breaking strength, and full drag at no more than 50%.
• Rinse the lever drag mechanism after every saltwater trip — Salt crystals can work into the lever drag cam and cause sticking or inconsistent drag settings over time. A light freshwater rinse of the drag lever area (not a soak) after each use keeps the mechanism smooth and your drag settings reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the FTH25NLD2, FTH30LD2, and FTH40LD2?
A: The primary differences are line capacity and drag rating. The 25NLD2 and 30LD2 share the same gear ratios (5.5:1 / 2.7:1) and 33 lb max drag, but the 30LD2 holds more line — making it better for deeper water or heavier braid. The 40LD2 steps up to a 40 lb max drag and slightly lower gear ratios (5.0:1 / 2.5:1) for more cranking power, ideal for larger species and heavier applications.

Q: Is the Penn Fathom 2-Speed good for yellowtail and tuna?
A: Yes — it's an excellent choice for both. The two-speed system is particularly valuable when yellowtail or tuna sound deep after being hooked. Drop to low gear to maintain pressure and grind them up without burning out. The Dura-Drag system handles the sustained pressure these species put on gear, and the stainless steel gear train holds up to repeated hard fights.

Q: How does the lever drag work compared to a star drag reel?
A: A lever drag reel uses a lever (instead of a star wheel) to set drag pressure, with pre-set positions for freespool, strike, and full drag. This gives you faster, more repeatable drag adjustments mid-fight — critical when a fish makes a sudden run. Star drag reels require spinning the star wheel to adjust, which is slower and less precise. Lever drag is preferred by most serious offshore anglers for this reason.

Q: What line should I use on the Penn Fathom 2-Speed?
A: For most offshore applications, 50–65 lb braided line is the go-to choice on the 25NLD2 and 30LD2, with a 60–80 lb fluorocarbon or mono leader. The 40LD2 handles 65–80 lb braid well for heavier bottom fishing or larger pelagics. Mono is still a solid choice for live bait applications where stretch is beneficial.

Compact Two-Speed Control for Versatile Saltwater Fishing

The Avet JX 6/3 Raptor MC Plus 2 Speed Reel combines a compact, narrow-profile JX frame with Raptor drag performance and a distinctive MC multi-color anodized finish. Its 6.0:1 high gear helps you recover line and work lures, while the 3.0:1 low gear gives you added cranking leverage when a fish sounds, circles, or pulls hard near the boat.

When your day moves from yellowtail and tuna to dorado, wahoo, rockfish, or lingcod, the JX 6/3 Raptor MC Plus keeps the setup adaptable without becoming cumbersome. Precision-machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, stainless steel components, sealed bearings, and a smooth lever drag are built for demanding offshore and inshore saltwater use. Available in right- and left-hand retrieve. Made in California.

Compact Size, Real Two-Speed Versatility

The narrow JX profile stays comfortable in hand while giving you two useful retrieve ranges. Use high gear when speed and line recovery matter, then shift into low when the fish changes the rules and steady cranking power becomes more important than raw retrieve speed.

High Gear to Move, Low Gear to Finish

• 6.0:1 high gear: Gain line on a running fish and work lures efficiently.
• 3.0:1 low gear: Add leverage when a fish sounds or makes a heavy turn.
• Raptor carbon drag: Maintain smooth, consistent pressure during extended fights.
• MC finish: Add a corrosion-resistant multi-color anodized finish to a purpose-built saltwater reel.

Key Features & Benefits

• TwinDrag® System
The Valiant SPJ uses a patented TwinDrag® setup, applying drag pressure evenly from both sides of the spool. This reduces uneven wear, improves heat dissipation, and gives you smoother drag performance under load.

• CVX® Curved Frame & Sideplate Design
Machined from high-grade aluminum, the frame and sideplate adopt a curved structure (CVX® technology) that removes unnecessary material while preserving rigidity. This results in a lighter reel with excellent strength and torsional resistance.

• 17-4 Stainless Steel Gears & Shaft
Internal drive components are made from 17-4 heat-treated stainless steel, providing longevity, corrosion resistance, and reliable torque even in harsh saltwater environments.

• Sleeved Spool Construction
A sleeved spool design reduces friction on the spool shaft, enhancing free-spool performance. That means smoother drops, better line behavior, and less friction drag when letting your jigs fall.

• Optimized SPJ Components
Compared to standard Valiant models, SPJ versions typically omit the clicker, include an SPJ-specific knob, and use a handle length tailored for jigging leverage. These refinements improve ergonomics and reduce fatigue during long sessions.

• High Drag Capacity in Compact Package
Despite their relatively lightweight builds, Valiant SPJ reels can deliver robust drag — suitable for serious bottom fish, tuna, and other strong fighters — depending on model (e.g. 24 lb, 30 lb, or more).

• Made in the USA / Quality Craftsmanship
These are assembled and tested under high standards to ensure precision tolerances and consistent performance.

The Shimano Twin Power SW Spinning Reels are designed for anglers demanding strength and durability. The TwinPower SWC dominates even the most challenging fighting offshore game fish. Now featuring Infinity Drive to provide anglers with more cranking power under load, the TwinPower SW will put anglers in the driver's seat to win the battle even against the most hard-fighting game fish.

New for 2021, the TwinPower SW 10000 and 14000 models incorporate Shimano's Heatsink Drag to deliver overwhelming drag performance by dissipating heat away from the spool to reduce drag-force drop caused by friction. The Heatsink Drag also provides insulation against potentially-damaging heat flowing into the line to give the anglers increased performance during blistering runs and long fights with hard-fighting game fish.

Whether targeting reef species with jigs or pitching live baits to pelagics, the new TwinPower SW empowers anglers to have a distinct advantage and conquer any battle.

Features:

High-Speed Pickup and Low-Gear Offshore Power

The Avet MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC 2-Speed Reel is built for anglers who want a fast retrieve for gaining line and a powerful low gear for the heavy part of the fight. Its 6.0:1 high gear and 3.0:1 low gear let you change tactics when a fish runs, sounds, or turns toward structure, while the Raptor drag system delivers smooth, consistent pressure under load.

Precision-machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, stainless steel components, sealed bearings, lever drag control, and an MC multi-color anodized finish give this reel the durable, purpose-built feel serious offshore tackle demands. The lineup includes right-hand models in Silver, Blue, Black, and Gunmetal, plus a left-hand Silver model. It is made in the USA.

One Reel, Two Ways to Win the Fight

Fast gear is your advantage when a fish runs toward the boat or when you need to quickly take back slack. Low gear is where the reel earns its keep, giving you a slower, more powerful retrieve when the fish is deep and every turn of the handle matters. That change of pace is the point of the MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC: it gives you a direct response to what the fish is doing instead of forcing one retrieve speed through the entire fight.

Built for Long, Demanding Offshore Days

The MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC is designed for offshore big-game applications including tuna, marlin, wahoo, dorado, grouper, amberjack, and other hard-fighting saltwater species. Use it when the trip calls for a machined aluminum conventional reel, a reliable two-speed mechanism, and a finish and component package made for repeated saltwater use.

The Right Pick If...

• You want a dedicated offshore 2-speed reel with a fast 6.0:1 gear and powerful 3.0:1 low gear.
• You fish for tuna, marlin, wahoo, dorado, grouper, amberjack, or similar gamefish.
• You want Raptor drag performance with precise lever control.
• You value a precision-machined aluminum frame and stainless steel components.
• You want right-hand color choices or the listed left-hand Silver configuration.

Where It Fits in the Avet Lineup

The MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC is the offshore-focused MXL option with 6.0:1/3.0:1 gearing and a multi-color anodized finish. For the standard MXL Raptor 2-Speed with 6.4:1/3.8:1 gearing and up to 31 lb of listed full drag, compare the Avet MXL Raptor. For a single-speed G2 setup, see the Avet G2 MXL Single Speed. If you want a smaller, narrower Raptor platform, compare the Avet MXJ Raptor.

Best Techniques and Conditions

• Offshore trolling: Use high gear to gain line quickly when a fish changes direction, then shift to low gear when it turns deep.
• Live-bait fishing: The lever drag gives you quick pressure control while the two-speed system lets you match your retrieve to the fish.
• Offshore jigging: High gear helps you work a presentation and recover slack, while low gear adds leverage after the hookset.
• Heavy saltwater applications: The machined aluminum frame, stainless components, and sealed bearings suit demanding offshore conditions.

Choose the MXL 6/3 when you want a larger, purpose-built offshore setup that can move quickly and still produce steady cranking power when the fight gets serious.
