Lever Drag Reels

AVET MXJ6/3 Raptor MC Plus is a compact two-speed lever drag reel for anglers who want quick line pickup up top and dependable low-gear power when a hard-running fish digs deep. Its machined aluminum construction, carbon fiber drag system, and MC Plus platform make it a versatile saltwater choice for offshore jigging, bottom fishing, trolling, and casting.

Fast Retrieve When You Need It, Torque When It Matters

The two-speed design lets you move line quickly during a hot run, then shift down for controlled cranking power near the boat or over structure. The narrow MXJ profile keeps the reel comfortable to palm while you work tuna, wahoo, amberjack, and other powerful saltwater species.

Why Choose the MXJ6/3 Raptor MC Plus?

• Two-speed control: Change from fast line pickup to lower-gear power as the fight changes.
• MC aluminum construction: Machined aluminum frame and spool provide a rigid platform for heavy saltwater use.
• Raptor drag performance: The multi-disc carbon fiber drag is built for smooth, consistent pressure.
• Practical retrieve choices: Choose a standard right-hand model or the Silver left-hand configuration.
• Saltwater-ready hardware: Stainless components and sealed bearings support regular offshore use when properly rinsed and maintained.

Built for These Saltwater Situations

Choose this reel for offshore jigging, bottom fishing, trolling, or casting when you need both speed and leverage in one compact conventional reel. It is especially well suited to tuna, wahoo, amberjack, and other hard-fighting saltwater gamefish.

High-Speed Pickup and Low-Gear Offshore Power

The Avet MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC 2-Speed Reel is built for anglers who want a fast retrieve for gaining line and a powerful low gear for the heavy part of the fight. Its 6.0:1 high gear and 3.0:1 low gear let you change tactics when a fish runs, sounds, or turns toward structure, while the Raptor drag system delivers smooth, consistent pressure under load.

Precision-machined 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum, stainless steel components, sealed bearings, lever drag control, and an MC multi-color anodized finish give this reel the durable, purpose-built feel serious offshore tackle demands. The lineup includes right-hand models in Silver, Blue, Black, and Gunmetal, plus a left-hand Silver model. It is made in the USA.

One Reel, Two Ways to Win the Fight

Fast gear is your advantage when a fish runs toward the boat or when you need to quickly take back slack. Low gear is where the reel earns its keep, giving you a slower, more powerful retrieve when the fish is deep and every turn of the handle matters. That change of pace is the point of the MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC: it gives you a direct response to what the fish is doing instead of forcing one retrieve speed through the entire fight.

Built for Long, Demanding Offshore Days

The MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC is designed for offshore big-game applications including tuna, marlin, wahoo, dorado, grouper, amberjack, and other hard-fighting saltwater species. Use it when the trip calls for a machined aluminum conventional reel, a reliable two-speed mechanism, and a finish and component package made for repeated saltwater use.

The Right Pick If...

• You want a dedicated offshore 2-speed reel with a fast 6.0:1 gear and powerful 3.0:1 low gear.
• You fish for tuna, marlin, wahoo, dorado, grouper, amberjack, or similar gamefish.
• You want Raptor drag performance with precise lever control.
• You value a precision-machined aluminum frame and stainless steel components.
• You want right-hand color choices or the listed left-hand Silver configuration.

Where It Fits in the Avet Lineup

The MXL 6/3 Raptor Plus MC is the offshore-focused MXL option with 6.0:1/3.0:1 gearing and a multi-color anodized finish. For the standard MXL Raptor 2-Speed with 6.4:1/3.8:1 gearing and up to 31 lb of listed full drag, compare the Avet MXL Raptor. For a single-speed G2 setup, see the Avet G2 MXL Single Speed. If you want a smaller, narrower Raptor platform, compare the Avet MXJ Raptor.

Best Techniques and Conditions

• Offshore trolling: Use high gear to gain line quickly when a fish changes direction, then shift to low gear when it turns deep.

Ultra-Low Winch Power in a Compact, Castable JX Frame

The Avet Winch JX 6/3S puts three useful gear ranges and up to 70 lb of drag into a compact conventional reel. Use the 6.3:1 high gear to cover water and recover line, the 3.8:1 middle gear for steady pressure, and the ultra-low 2.0:1 winch gear when a big fish sounds and refuses to move.

When you need more muscle without jumping to a much larger reel, the Winch JX 6/3S gives you a balanced, fishable setup built around a one-piece 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminum frame and stainless steel internals. It is made for bluefin and yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, amberjack, grouper, snapper, rockfish, heavy trolling, deep drops, and long-range rail work. Designed and manufactured in Chatsworth, California.

Three Gears for Three Very Different Problems

• 6.3:1 high gear: Cover water, work surface irons, and regain line when a fish runs toward the boat.
• 3.8:1 middle gear: Keep a balanced retrieve and steady pressure on a circling fish.
• 2.0:1 winch gear: Add ultra-low cranking power when a fish sounds or bogs down under heavy drag.
• Push-button shifting: Change gears on the fly without losing focus on the fight.

When a Compact Reel Needs Serious Muscle

The Winch JX 6/3S solves the gap between a standard compact reel and a much larger big-game setup. Its compact JX-sized housing remains castable and manageable, while the three-speed transmission gives you the leverage to work fish out of deep water, heavy current, and structure.

The Right Pick If...

• You want a compact conventional reel with three-speed control.
• You need up to 70 lb of listed drag for powerful offshore fish.
• You target bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, yellowtail, amberjack, grouper, snapper, or rockfish.
• You fish live bait, deep jigs, deep drops, heavy trolling, or long-range rail setups.
• You want high-speed line recovery and an ultra-low winch gear in the same reel.

Best Techniques and Conditions

• Live-bait tuna fishing: Use high gear to recover line during a run, then shift to middle or winch gear as the fish settles deep.
• Vertical jigging: Work the jig in high gear and use winch gear to maintain pressure after the hookup.
• Deep drops: The 2.0:1 winch ratio gives you the leverage to work fish upward from depth.
• Heavy trolling: Use the gear that matches the fish’s direction, keeping the low range ready when the battle gets close and heavy.
• Structure fishing: Apply steady low-gear pressure to keep amberjack, grouper, and other fish from reaching cover.

Compact Raptor Power with More Retrieve Choices

The Avet SXJ Raptor Series 2-Speed Lever Drag Reel packs a powerful dual Avedrag carbon fiber system into a compact saltwater reel, delivering up to 17 lb of drag at strike and 26 lb at full. Its 6.4:1 high gear helps you pick up line quickly, while the 3.8:1 low gear gives you the torque to stay connected when a hard-pulling fish turns the fight into a grind.

The true one-piece 6061-T6 marine-grade aluminum frame is precision-machined for a solid, corrosion-resistant foundation. Five magnetic MC Cast Control settings help manage the spool when casting, and the lineup includes right-hand models plus a left-hand Silver option. Like the rest of the Raptor family, the SXJ is made in the USA.

More Control When the Fight Gets Heavy

A compact reel is great until a fish makes a hard run, changes direction, or uses current and structure against you. The SXJ Raptor answers with a high-output dual carbon drag, stainless steel gearing, and a second gear for leverage. It keeps the setup manageable in hand while giving you the control needed for yellowtail, white seabass, and similar saltwater applications.

Fast Line Pickup or Low-Gear Leverage

High gear is the move when a fish runs toward the boat, when you need to recover slack quickly, or when you are working a presentation that rewards speed. Low gear takes over when the fish digs deep or you need steady pressure close to structure. The lever drag lets you make controlled adjustments and return to a familiar strike setting.

The Right Pick If...

• You want a compact conventional reel with Raptor-level drag output.
• You fish saltwater for yellowtail, white seabass, and other strong gamefish.
• You want five MC magnetic settings to help manage the spool on the cast.
• You want 2-speed flexibility without moving to a larger reel platform.
• You prefer the choice of right-hand retrieve or the listed left-hand Silver model.

Where It Fits in the Avet Lineup

The SXJ Raptor is the compact 2-speed choice when retrieve options matter. For the standard SX Raptor platform in right-hand models, compare the Avet SX Raptor. If you want a single-speed reel with the newer compact G2 platform, see the Avet G2 SX Series. For a larger Raptor platform with more line capacity, move up to the Avet MXL Raptor.

Best Techniques and Conditions

• Offshore live bait: Use high gear to recover line during a fast run, then shift to low gear for steady pressure when the fish digs in.
• Jigging and casting: The MC system gives you a way to fine-tune spool control, while the 2-speed drivetrain keeps the reel versatile after the hookset.
• Structure-oriented saltwater fishing: The dual drag system and low gear help you keep pressure on a fish that is trying to turn toward cover.

The SXJ is a strong fit for saltwater anglers who want compact handling, controlled casting, and the option to fish right- or left-handed with the listed models.

Key Features

• Dual Avedrag carbon fiber drag: Up to 17 lb at strike and 26 lb at full.
• 2-speed gearing: 6.4:1 high gear and 3.8:1 low gear.
• MC Cast Control: Five magnetic settings for spool control.

Tackle Express Tips

• Set your strike position before the trip, then make small, smooth lever adjustments instead of moving straight to maximum pressure.
• Use high gear while a fish is moving toward you. Shift to low gear when you need steady torque and line control.
• Start with a moderate MC setting and fine-tune it for your lure, line, and casting conditions. Small changes are easier to manage than over-tightening the spool.

FAQ

Does the Avet SXJ Raptor come in left-hand retrieve?
Yes. The listed lineup includes a left-hand Silver model, along with right-hand models in Blue, Silver, Red, Gold, and Black.

What is the difference between the SXJ Raptor and SX Raptor?
Both use the listed 6.4:1 / 3.8:1 2-speed gearing, dual carbon drag, MC cast control, and 17 lb strike / 26 lb full drag. The SXJ lineup includes a left-hand Silver option, while the SX listing is right-hand only. Compare the SX Raptor models if you fish right-handed.

• If you're putting braided line on your reel, you don't need tape on the spool with the Cavalla, it has a rough knurled area on the spool.
• Great for small to medium size fish, say 20-50lbs

The Okuma Makaira SEa Yellowfin Tuna Limited Edition Lever Drag 2-Speed Reel takes one of the most trusted offshore platforms in the game and wraps it in a custom anodized finish inspired by the electric blues, metallic tones, and vivid yellows of the yellowfin tuna itself. This isn't a cosmetic upgrade on a budget reel — it's the full Makaira SEa platform, built to the same exacting standards that offshore anglers around the world rely on for tuna, marlin, and hard-running pelagic species, with a finish that turns heads at the dock and on the water.

The Makaira SEa Platform — Built for the Worst Days Offshore

The foundation is a rigid 6061-T6 machined aluminum frame and side plate, precision-machined to maintain perfect gear alignment even under maximum drag loads. Forged and machined aluminum spools, oversized stainless steel main and pinion gears, and helical cut gearing deliver the cranking power and smoothness needed when a 200lb yellowfin decides to sound. The Silent Anti-Reverse system minimizes handle back play and holds firm under the heaviest loads, so every pump of the rod translates directly into line on the spool.

Drag That Handles the Long Fight

Okuma's Dual Force Drag system pairs Carbonite drag washers with Cal's drag grease for smooth, consistent drag performance and superior heat management during extended battles. Whether you're 20 minutes into a bluefin fight or grinding on a marlin that won't quit, the drag stays consistent and doesn't fade. The 2-speed gearing system lets you shift instantly between high-speed line pickup and low-gear torque — critical when a fish turns and you need to recover line fast, or when you're grinding the last 50 yards of a long fight.

Models & Specs

Tackle Express Tips

• Choose your size by line class: The MK-16IISEa is ideal for 50–80lb applications targeting yellowfin and smaller bluefin. Step up to the MK-20IISEa for 80–130lb setups when targeting large bluefin, marlin, or bigeye tuna.
• Use the 2-speed strategically: Start the fight in high gear to recover line quickly when a fish turns toward the boat. Drop to low gear when the fish is deep and you need maximum torque to pump it up — don't grind in high gear when the fish is winning.
• Service the drag before big trips: Even with Cal's grease from the factory, a fresh drag service before a major offshore trip ensures peak performance when it counts. Bring it in or do it yourself with Okuma-approved drag grease.

FAQ

What's the difference between the MK-16IISEa-YFT and MK-20IISEa-YFT?
The numbers refer to the reel size — the 16 is a smaller, lighter reel suited for 50–80lb line class applications, while the 20 is a larger reel with more line capacity and drag power, ideal for 80–130lb setups targeting larger tuna, marlin, and bigeye. Both share the same Makaira SEa platform and Yellowfin Tuna Limited Edition finish.

Is this a true limited edition or just a color variant?
This is a genuine limited-edition release — the custom multi-color anodized finish inspired by yellowfin tuna coloration is exclusive to this run and is not part of the standard Makaira SEa lineup. Once stock is gone, it won't be reordered.

How does the Dual Force Drag system handle heat during long fights?
The Dual Force Drag pairs Carbonite drag washers with Cal's drag grease, a combination specifically chosen for heat resistance and consistent drag pressure over extended fights. Unlike drag systems that fade or spike under sustained pressure, the Makaira SEa's drag is engineered to stay smooth and consistent from the first run to the last pump.

Specifications

Penn Fathom II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reels give offshore anglers the speed to find line and the low-gear control to finish a hard fight. With the current range covering 25 through 80 sizes, this conventional lever-drag platform is built for serious saltwater work, from nearshore targets to heavy offshore applications.

Speed When You Need It, Power When It Counts

The Quick Shift II 2-speed system lets you change gears when the fight changes. Use high gear to pick up line quickly, then shift down when a tuna, yellowtail, or other powerful saltwater fish digs deep. Pull-to-Turn preset drag adjustment helps keep your chosen setting consistent while you work.

What This Reel Solves Offshore

Heavy tackle can feel bulky, while a single-speed reel forces a compromise between fast retrieve and winching power. The Fathom II combines both priorities in one rigid, full-metal conventional reel, with line-capacity rings for a quick read and a double-dog ratchet anti-reverse for dependable engagement.

Best For

• Offshore trolling for tuna and yellowtail
• Nearshore and offshore live-bait or bait fishing
• Heavy conventional setups where gear changes matter
• Long runs, deep fights, and situations that demand line pickup plus cranking control
• Right- and left-hand retrieve needs across the current 25–80 size range

The Penn Fathom Two Speed Conventional Reel (Original Black & Gold) is the proven workhorse that serious saltwater anglers have trusted for years. When you need to crank a big fish up from depth, switch gears mid-fight, or grind through a long bottom session without your reel giving out — this is the reel built for that job. It's not flashy. It's built to work.

Why Buy the Penn Fathom 2-Speed?

The Fathom 2-Speed gives you the mechanical advantage of two gear ratios in one compact, full-metal reel. When a big fish runs, you stay in high gear. When it's time to grind it up from depth, you drop to low gear and crank. That versatility — combined with Penn's legendary Dura-Drag system and stainless steel gear train — makes this one of the most capable conventional reels at its price point.

Main Use & Benefit

Designed for offshore and nearshore saltwater fishing where depth, drag pressure, and gear durability matter. The two-speed mechanism is the core benefit — it lets you fight fish efficiently at any depth without burning out your arms or losing control of the battle.

Problem It Solves

Single-speed conventional reels force you to choose between fast retrieval and cranking power. The Fathom 2-Speed eliminates that compromise. Drop into low gear when a big fish is pinned deep, then shift to high gear to recover line fast when it runs toward the boat. One reel handles both scenarios.

Advantages Over Disadvantages

• ✅ Two-speed mechanism gives mechanical advantage at depth — no single-speed reel can match this for deep-water fights
• ✅ Full metal body and sideplates maintain gear alignment under extreme load
• ✅ Penn Dura-Drag delivers consistent, heat-resistant drag pressure across long fights
• ✅ Stainless steel main gear, pinion gear, and gear train built for long-term durability
• ✅ Classic black and gold Penn styling — a proven, trusted design
• ⚠️ Heavier than single-speed spinning reels — not ideal for light finesse applications
• ⚠️ Lever drag requires familiarity — new anglers may need a short learning curve

When to Choose It

Choose the Penn Fathom 2-Speed when you're targeting species at depth, fishing heavy live bait, or need a reel that can handle sustained drag pressure over a long fight. It's the right call for deep-drop bottom fishing, offshore jigging, live bait fishing for large pelagics, and any situation where cranking power matters more than casting distance.

Best Fishing Techniques

• Deep-drop bottom fishing — low gear cranking power to bring fish up from depth
• Slow-pitch and speed jigging — high gear for fast jig retrieves, low gear for grinding up big fish
• Live bait fishing — smooth lever drag for controlled freespool and precise strike settings
• Light trolling — consistent drag pressure for pelagic species
• Vertical jigging — compact size and two-speed versatility ideal for working jigs at depth

Best Conditions

• Offshore and nearshore saltwater environments
• Deep-water structure fishing (reefs, ledges, wrecks)
• Kelp beds and rocky inshore structure
• Party boat and charter boat fishing
• Any situation requiring sustained drag pressure and gear durability

Best For

• Techniques: Deep-drop bottom fishing, slow-pitch jigging, speed jigging, live bait fishing, light trolling, vertical jigging
• Species: Yellowtail, halibut, tuna, calico bass, rockfish, lingcod, white seabass, grouper, snapper
• Use Cases: Party boat fishing, charter boat fishing, offshore trips, kelp bed fishing, deep-water structure fishing

Tackle Express Tips

• Use the low gear to save your arms on deep drops — When you're fishing 200+ feet of water for rockfish, lingcod, or halibut, drop into low gear as soon as the fish is hooked and grind it up steadily. Fighting a big fish in high gear at depth is exhausting and increases the chance of losing it. Let the reel's mechanical advantage do the work.
• Set your strike and full drag positions before you drop — The lever drag system lets you pre-set both your strike drag and full drag positions. Do this before every drop so you're not fumbling with settings when a fish hits. A good rule of thumb: set strike drag at about 25–30% of your line's breaking strength, and full drag at no more than 50%.
• Rinse the lever drag mechanism after every saltwater trip — Salt crystals can work into the lever drag cam and cause sticking or inconsistent drag settings over time. A light freshwater rinse of the drag lever area (not a soak) after each use keeps the mechanism smooth and your drag settings reliable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between the FTH25NLD2, FTH30LD2, and FTH40LD2?
A: The primary differences are line capacity and drag rating. The 25NLD2 and 30LD2 share the same gear ratios (5.5:1 / 2.7:1) and 33 lb max drag, but the 30LD2 holds more line — making it better for deeper water or heavier braid. The 40LD2 steps up to a 40 lb max drag and slightly lower gear ratios (5.0:1 / 2.5:1) for more cranking power, ideal for larger species and heavier applications.

Q: Is the Penn Fathom 2-Speed good for yellowtail and tuna?
A: Yes — it's an excellent choice for both. The two-speed system is particularly valuable when yellowtail or tuna sound deep after being hooked. Drop to low gear to maintain pressure and grind them up without burning out. The Dura-Drag system handles the sustained pressure these species put on gear, and the stainless steel gear train holds up to repeated hard fights.

Q: How does the lever drag work compared to a star drag reel?
A: A lever drag reel uses a lever (instead of a star wheel) to set drag pressure, with pre-set positions for freespool, strike, and full drag. This gives you faster, more repeatable drag adjustments mid-fight — critical when a fish makes a sudden run. Star drag reels require spinning the star wheel to adjust, which is slower and less precise. Lever drag is preferred by most serious offshore anglers for this reason.

Q: What line should I use on the Penn Fathom 2-Speed?
A: For most offshore applications, 50–65 lb braided line is the go-to choice on the 25NLD2 and 30LD2, with a 60–80 lb fluorocarbon or mono leader. The 40LD2 handles 65–80 lb braid well for heavier bottom fishing or larger pelagics. Mono is still a solid choice for live bait applications where stretch is beneficial.

Shimano Ocea Jigger LD Reels are specialized conventional reels for slow-pitch jigging and deep-water vertical techniques. HAGANE Body and Gear construction, Infinity Drive, X-Ship, MicroModule Gear II, a Fall Lever, and a line counter give serious jig anglers the control to manage the drop, work the presentation, and return to productive depth.

Choose the 2500MG for a 5.7:1 retrieve or the 2500HG for a faster 6.2:1 retrieve. The HG is available in both right- and left-hand versions, giving you more freedom to match the reel to your preferred retrieve direction.

Control the Fall, Then Feel the Bite

Slow-pitch jigging is all about cadence. The Fall Lever helps control how the jig descends, while the sensitive drag and ultra-light rotation help you stay connected to subtle bites in deep water. The trade-off is specialization: this is a jigging-focused reel, not the broadest choice for general-purpose bait or trolling work. Pick it when jig presentation and depth control come first.

Technology That Works Together

Shimano SpeedMaster II 2-Speed Lever Drag Reels give offshore anglers a practical way to switch from fast line pickup to low-gear cranking power. With an all-metal body, carbon drag, four bearings, and two-speed gearing, this family is built for deep-water bottom fishing, light trolling, and yellowtail or tuna trips where pressure and control matter.

Choose from six listed sizes: 8 II, 10 II, 12 II, 16 II, 20 II, and 25 II. The smaller sizes keep a lighter profile for nearshore work, while the larger models add line capacity and higher maximum drag for deeper water and bigger fish. Confirmed technical rows for SPM12II through SPM25II are shown below; the 8 II and 10 II variants are available, but corresponding technical values were not included in the supplied specification data.

Why Two Speeds Earn Their Keep

Use the high gear when you need quick line pickup, then shift into low gear when a fish gets deep and every turn of the handle needs more leverage. The lever drag gives you a repeatable way to manage pressure during the fight. The trade-off is extra weight and a more involved reel than a single-speed model, but that added control pays off when deep-water cranking power matters.

Built for the Work Offshore Demands

Models & Confirmed Specifications

The values below are listed by model, not price, so you can compare the reel to your line plan and target species.

Monofilament Line Capacity

Capacities are shown as pounds/yards.

PowerPro Braid Line Capacity

Capacities are shown as pounds/yards.

The Right Pick If...

• You want one conventional reel family for deep-water bottom fishing and light trolling.
• You want low-gear leverage for bigger fish without giving up fast pickup in high gear.
• You are comparing yellowtail and tuna setups and need to match reel size to line capacity.
• You prefer a rigid metal-bodied reel with lever-drag control over a lighter single-speed design.

Best Techniques & Conditions

The SpeedMaster II is a strong fit for nearshore and offshore trips, especially deep-water bottom fishing and light trolling. Use high gear when you need to recover line quickly, and shift to low gear when depth, current, or a hard-running fish makes each crank count. For yellowtail or tuna, compare the capacity tables with your planned mono or PowerPro braid before choosing a size.

Tackle Express Tips

• Plan the spool first: Start with the line capacity table, then choose the smallest model that gives you the reserve you need.
• Use the gears with purpose: High gear is for pickup; low gear is for controlled pressure and deep-water cranking.
• Match the rod: Pair the reel with a conventional rod rated for your line class and technique rather than choosing by reel size alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Shimano SpeedMaster II a two-speed reel?

Yes. The family uses high and low gear ratios, with the exact ratios varying by model. SPM12II and SPM16II are listed at 5.7:1 / 3.1:1, while SPM20II and SPM25II are listed at 5.2:1 / 2.3:1.

Which SpeedMaster II size should I choose?

Choose based on your target line plan, depth, and fish size. The SPM12II and SPM16II are lighter and list 40 pounds of maximum drag, while the SPM20II and SPM25II provide more listed capacity and 44 pounds of maximum drag.

What line can I spool on these reels?

The confirmed tables above include both monofilament and PowerPro braid capacities for SPM12II, SPM16II, SPM20II, and SPM25II. The 8 II and 10 II variants are available, but their corresponding line-capacity values were not included in the supplied specifications.

Complete the Setup

For a bait-fishing setup, pair your reel with Shimano Teramar West Coast Inshore Casting Rods. For vertical jigging, compare it with Shimano Grappler Type J Conventional Jigging Rods. Shimano Talica A Two-Speed Lever Drag Reels are built for the moment a strong fish sounds and a single-speed reel runs out of answers. Push-button shifting gives you high-gear line pickup when a tuna runs toward the boat, then low-gear leverage when the fight turns deep and heavy.

The six-size lineup covers SoCal bait fishing, yo-yo iron, sinker rigs, flat-fall and knife jigs, kite fishing, trolling, and long-range saltwater. Match the reel to the line class you actually fish, then use the size guide below to choose the capacity you need.

Two Speeds for the Part of the Fight That Gets Hard

High gear helps you recover line quickly, work a surface iron, and stay connected when a fish changes direction. Low gear gives you more leverage after a fish sounds under the boat. You can shift under load without backing off the drag, which is the advantage that separates this family from a single-speed conventional reel.

Models & Size Guide

All six listed sizes are right-hand retrieve. Use the size, line-class, and technique guidance together rather than choosing by fish name alone.

Line Capacity Reference

The following PowerPro capacity figures are confirmed in the current listing. Capacities are shown as line weight/yards.

Best Species, Techniques & Conditions

• Bluefin and yellowtail: Sinker rigs, flylined sardines or mackerel, and yo-yo iron.
• Deep-water jigging: Flat-fall and knife jigs around 200–400 feet, especially with the 20IIA and 25IIA.
• Kite and trolling work: The 25IIA, 40IIA, and 50IIA for heavier offshore presentations.
• Trips: Catalina and Channel Islands runs, 1.5-day and long-range boats, private sportfishers, and Baja saltwater trips.

The Right Pick If...

• You want both fast line pickup and low-gear cranking leverage.
• You fish bluefin on a sinker rig and need a reel that can handle the turn from open water to deep pressure.
• You want a 12IIA or 16IIA for lighter tuna and yellowtail work, or a 20IIA and up for heavier long-range applications.
• You prefer a lever drag with an included light-line cam for more gradual pressure on lighter line.

Tackle Express Tips

• Set strike drag with a scale: Roughly one-third of your topshot's rated breaking strength is a sensible starting point for bait fishing.
• Shift before you are exhausted: Move to low gear when the fish stops running and starts circling, rather than waiting until the rod is fully loaded.
• Protect the reel after the trip: Rinse with low-pressure fresh water, back the lever off for storage, and service the two-speed mechanism regularly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Talica A size is best for bluefin tuna?

The 20IIA is the lineup's practical starting point for many bluefin sinker-rig applications. The 25IIA adds more 65 lb. PowerPro capacity for longer-range work, while the 12IIA and 16IIA fit lighter 30 lb. class fishing.

What is the difference between the Talica A and older Talica II?

The A series adds Infinity Drive, Cross Carbon Drag, X-Protect water resistance, and an included Light-Line Drag Cam. It is a mechanical redesign rather than a cosmetic update.

Is the Talica A available in left-hand retrieve?

No. All six listed Talica A sizes are right-hand retrieve.
