Castaic Lake Report 08-03-2025

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:

Bass fishing slowed down slightly this week as far as the early surface bite was concerned. An algae bloom and water fluctuations probably accounted for most Bass feeding sub-surface for a few days. Dropshot rigs fished along steep walls and main-lake points in the five to twenty five foot depth range accounted for the most fish overall, with C3 Baits Shimmy’s and Bait Merchant Caligators topping the list of productive baits. Four or five inch wacky rigged Senko’s and C3 Baits Slim Pro’s fished along the steeper dropoffs and walls are connecting with some quality fish as well. Live Shad continue to keep the net wet, but we have switched over to fishing them deeper, either with a small bb splitshot or on a dropshot rig.

Striped Bass:

Surface boils in the Ski Arm around the island and in the forebay area have kept anglers busy at times, but this isn’t a very consistent bite as of yet. Big schools of six pound class fish will hit just about any white surface lure, but we stick with Lucky Craft Gunfish 100’s and Espetit 95’s because of their greater casting distance. Any time you don’t have to move the boat to reach a boil will almost always result in solid hookups.

Bluegill:

‘Gills are biting near overhanging green bushes that provide shade in the backs of coves like Dry Gulch, Hawks Nest and Utopia. A small piece of red worm or meal worm will get bit all day. Great fun for the kids as it is a very visual bite and easy to do.
