The hook used is as important as any other part of the equation.  Gamakatsu Nautilus Ringed Circle Hooks are among the best due to their superior diameter to strength ratio.  The ring allows the bait to swim easier and adds a pivot point when in the fishes mouth which reduces leverage which can pull the hook.

This beak style hook makes it more difficult for the fish to throw a hook and often sets in the mouth rather than in the gut.  We find it between a circle hook and a regular live bait hook.

Owner Mutu Circle hooks are extra strong and able to handle big tuna, yellowtail, halibut and may other species.  Like all circle hooks, make sure you don't set the hook with the rod.  Once bit, point the rod at the fish and wind until the rod loads up.  The hook should be in the corner of the mouth right where you want it.

The Dolphin Glow White Banana Heads are great fro pinning on a piece of squid or a whole squid depending on what you're fishing for.  The hook is a stout Mustad hook and the large size allows you to pin on 1 or 2 full size squid for yellowtail, white seabass, calicos, or whatever you fish for.  We love to let it freespool and sink out real slow with a full squid for white seabass, they will just slurp it down like candy.
