The Halco Roosta Popper 135 is perfect for targeting game fish that are aggressively  attacking bait fish near or on the surface.  The hardware on these poppers is of the highest quality and will stand up to big fish like tuna, GT's, dorado, and peacock bass. They are best used with a heavy spinning rod and reel due to the higher inches of line retrieved per crank.  We prefer to have braided line with a short 3' top shot of monofilament or fluorocarbon.

While designed with a blooping style retrieve in mind, the Roosta Haymaker can be simply wound in at speed or trolled for excellent results.The recommended method of retrieval for best results is to point the rod tip at the lure, retrieve any slack line and firmly sweep the rod tip in a downward motion approximately 45 degrees. Allow the lure to rest for several seconds and if a fish hasn't taken the lure repeat as necessary.

The challenge with light surface irons is castability — at 2.1 oz the 7X Jr is light enough to work the surface properly but still heavy enough to cast on appropriate tackle. On a 7–8 ft spinning rod in the 15–25 lb class you get adequate distance for calico and inshore yellowtail fishing without the setup being so heavy that the iron gets pushed underwater on the retrieve. This is the iron for calico bass kelp edge fishing, light-tackle yellowtail when the bite is picky, and any situation where a 3–5 oz iron is simply too much weight for the technique or the fish.

• For calico bass on the kelp edge, Green Black and Green Sardine are the two most consistent colors. Fish tight to the kelp canopy — cast so the iron lands within a foot of the kelp line and start your retrieve immediately. Calico bass strike fast and close to cover; a hesitant presentation gives them time to return to structure.
• At 2.1 oz, the 7X Jr pairs best with a 7–8 ft spinning rod in the 15–25 lb class or a light conventional setup with similar ratings. Too heavy a rod overpowers the iron and prevents it from working correctly on the surface; too light and you lose casting distance and the ability to drive a hookset.
• For yellowtail that are on top but refusing heavier irons, step down to the 7X Jr and speed up your retrieve significantly — fast enough that the iron skips and skitters. This triggers reaction strikes from fish that are watching but not committing to slower presentations.

FAQ

What's the difference between the 7X Jr and the 7X Light?
Both are surface irons but different sizes. The 7X Jr is 2.1 oz at 5 3/8" — lighter and shorter, designed for light-tackle calico bass and finesse yellowtail fishing. The 7X Light is 3.5 oz at 6 3/8" — heavier and longer, casts farther and works better in wind or when you need more distance. Choose the 7X Jr for lighter setups and picky fish; choose the 7X Light when you need casting distance or heavier current.

What hook setup works best for the 7X Jr?
For calico bass, a single Siwash hook (Owner Stinger Siwash 2/0–3/0) is the local standard — better hookup rate in cover and less risk of fouling on kelp. For yellowtail and open-water species, a small treble (Owner ST-36 or similar in #2–1/0) gives more hook exposure for faster-moving fish. Match hook size to the split ring — don't oversize the hook or it will affect the iron's surface action.

Can I yo-yo the 7X Jr?

Stick Jacket Casting rod sleeves work great for protecting your rod from scratches, broken guides, and tangles.  The sleeve slips over your rod with ease and keeps the line from catching on other rods.  

It acts like a trap and hold tight to the rod until you want to take it off.  The brass grommet on the end allows you to hang it up on the wall without falling out (without the reel.)  

The jacket falls short of covering the entire rod, it usually stops short enough to have a lure tied on and attached to the hook keeper without hanging up.  We recommend not putting a lure on the guides, this will result in snagging on the Stick Jacket.

The PK-7 is what you throw when you want to change who shows up. Seven inches and 1.3 ounces of paddle-tail profile — it doesn't out-fish the PK-5 on numbers, and it isn't supposed to. It calls up a different class of fish.

Short version: 7", 1.3 oz, two baits per pack, weedless on an 8/0 hook. Bigger meal, heavier gear, fewer bites, better fish.

When to Size Up

The PK-5 matches what calicos eat most of the year. The PK-7 doesn't try to — it deliberately over-matches the bait in the water, and that's the point. Reasons to reach for it:

• The bait in the water is genuinely big. Full-size mackerel and larger smelt on the surface means a 5" bait is the small option, not the natural one.
• You're culling for size. A big profile filters out the small ones and pulls fish that were ignoring your other bait.
• Yellowtail are in the mix. A 7" bait is a reasonable meal for a yellow in a way a 5" isn't.
• Dirty or deep water. When visibility drops, displacement matters more than detail, and this bait moves considerably more water.

What It Takes to Fish It

This is not a light-tackle bait. A 1.3 oz bait on a 3/4 oz head is over two ounces before the fish shows up. Fish it on a rod with the backbone to load and cast that, and enough tip left to still work the bait — a light swimbait stick will fold on the cast and you'll never get the distance or the hookset.

Match an 8/0 hook to the body. Run the point up through the belly so it sits flush in the slot — buried too deep costs hookups, riding proud costs the weedless advantage. At this hook size the gap is generous, and getting it seated straight matters more than it does on the smaller baits.

The plastisol is the same firm formula as the rest of the line: slightly less tail flutter than the softest baits on the shelf, considerably more fish per bait. At two per pack, that durability is doing real work on your cost per trip.

On an Umbrella Rig

Five PK-7s is a heavy package — roughly 6.5 oz of plastic before you add heads. It builds the biggest school in the Pickle Kick lineup and it demands a rod to match.

Straight talk: a five-arm PK-7 rig is the most expensive and most demanding build in this lineup. If it's your first umbrella rig, build it with PK-5s and save this configuration for when you know the rig swims right and your rod can handle it.

• Match the head to the depth, not to the bait's size. A 1.3 oz bait doesn't automatically want a heavy head — use the lightest one that holds your zone.
• Check your rod before you buy the pack. Two ounces of bait and head on an under-gunned stick is a bad cast and a worse hookset.

Common Mistakes

• Undersizing the hook. This body takes an 8/0. A 5/0 from your PK-5 box will not clear it on the hookset.
• Fishing it on PK-5 tackle. The single most common reason this bait disappoints people.
• Throwing it when the bait in the water is small. Over-matching is a deliberate tactic, not a default. When the fish are keyed on 3" bait, size down.
• Buying two packs for an umbrella rig. Two per pack, five arms. You need three.

PK-5 or PK-7?
PK-5 is the everyday size and matches what calicos eat most of the year. Go PK-7 when the bait in the water is genuinely big, when you're culling for size, when yellowtail are in the mix, or when visibility is poor and you need displacement.

What rod do I need for it?
Enough backbone to load and cast two-plus ounces of bait and head, with enough tip left to work the bait and drive an 8/0 hook. A light swimbait rod will fold on the cast.

What jig head weight should I use?
Match the head to the depth you're fishing, not to the bait's size. Use the lightest head that holds your zone — too much weight drags the nose down and kills the tail.

How many packs do I need for a five-arm umbrella rig?
Three. Five arms, two baits per pack — you'll finish with one spare.

Is it weedless?

Tackle Express Tips:

• Thinner wire hooks don't injure the bait as much and therefore let it swim better.  These hooks are fairly thin so keep that in mind if you're targeting larger fish.
• Don't set the hook when you get bit, simply turn the hook and hang on.
• Set the drag on your reel lighter so you don't bend the hook pulling too hard.
• Fish lighter line than you normally would, the lighter the wire of the hook the lighter the line and drag pressure.
• These hooks are great if the bite gets tough and you need to downsize your tackle.  Often times that make a big difference.

• What size Mutu Light is best for anchovies? — Size 4 to 1/0 depending on anchovy size. Smaller anchovies take a size 4 or 6; larger anchovies work well on a size 1 or 1/0.
