The Halco Roosta PopperΒ 135 is perfect for targeting game fish that are aggressively Β attacking bait fish near or on the surface. Β The hardware on these poppers is of the highest quality and will stand up to big fish like tuna, GT's, dorado, and peacock bass. They are best used with a heavy spinning rod and reel due to the higher inches of line retrieved per crank. Β We prefer to have braided line with a short 3' top shot of monofilament or fluorocarbon.
While designed with a blooping style retrieve in mind, the Roosta Haymaker can be simply wound in at speed or trolled for excellent results. The recommended method of retrieval for best results is to point the rod tip at the lure, retrieve any slack line and firmly sweep the rod tip in a downward motion approximately 45 degrees. Allow the lure to rest for several seconds and if a fish hasn't taken the lure repeat as necessary.

The Salas 7X Jr is 2.1 oz in a 5Β 3/8" body β the lightest iron Salas makes. It's built for finesse surface fishing: light line, light tackle, and situations where a full-size surface iron is too heavy to work correctly. At 2.1 oz the 7X Jr dances on the surface rather than pushing through it, creating the erratic side-to-side action that calico bass, picky yellowtail, and light-bite fish respond to when heavier irons get refused. If you're fishing 15β20 lb fluorocarbon on a spinning or light conventional setup, this is your iron.
Light Enough to Work, Heavy Enough to Cast
The challenge with light surface irons is castability β at 2.1 oz the 7X Jr is light enough to work the surface properly but still heavy enough to cast on appropriate tackle. On a 7β8 ft spinning rod in the 15β25 lb class you get adequate distance for calico and inshore yellowtail fishing without the setup being so heavy that the iron gets pushed underwater on the retrieve. This is the iron for calico bass kelp edge fishing, light-tackle yellowtail when the bite is picky, and any situation where a 3β5 oz iron is simply too much weight for the technique or the fish.
Hand-Cast in Southern California
Like all Salas irons, the 7X Jr is hand-cast in California β individually poured, not mass-produced offshore. Six colors cover the conditions most common in inshore and nearshore fishing: mint and sardine patterns for clear water, Green Black for kelp-edge calico situations, Scrambled Egg for low light, and Blue and White for anchovy-forage days.
The Right Pick If...
- You're fishing calico bass on the kelp edge with light spinning or conventional gear
- Yellowtail are on top but picky β refusing heavier irons and responding better to a smaller, lighter presentation
- You're fishing 15β25 lb fluorocarbon or light braid and want an iron that balances correctly on that tackle weight
- Fish are hitting small bait near the surface and a 3+ oz iron is too heavy to stay in the strike zone
- You want to pair with the 7X Jr Heavy for same-profile coverage from surface to mid-water column
Best Fishing Techniques
- Surface casting β fast erratic retrieve: Cast past the school or structure, engage immediately, and crank fast with rod tip up; the light body dances erratically on the surface and draws reaction strikes
- Slow surface walk: Reel slowly and let the iron wander side to side; effective for calico bass holding tight to kelp who want a slower-moving target
- Burn and pause: Fast retrieve with brief pauses; the iron flutters slightly on the pause and often draws the strike during the hesitation
- Near-surface swing: Cast across current and let the iron swing through the water column at 1β5 ft depth with a slow retrieve; works for yellowtail staged near the surface in current
Best Conditions
- Calm to moderate surface conditions where fish are visibly working on top
- Kelp edge and nearshore reef fishing for calico bass
- Light bait conditions β small sardines, anchovies, smelt
- Light-tackle setups: spinning or light conventional in the 15β25 lb class
Best For
- Calico bass β kelp edge and structure fishing with light gear
- Yellowtail β finesse surface fishing when fish are picky or on small bait
- Bonito and barracuda β fast surface retrieve; the light iron matches the small bait these species are often eating
- Any inshore species responding to light surface iron presentations
Key Features
- Weight: 2.1 oz
- Length: 5Β 3/8"
- Hand-cast in Southern California
- 6 color options covering sardine, mint, kelp-edge, and anchovy patterns
- Lightest iron in the Salas lineup β built for finesse surface presentations on light tackle
- Rigged with split ring; add a treble or single hook depending on target species
Color Guide
| Color | SKU | Best Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Mint Sardine | SLS020 | Clear water; sardine forage |
| Mint | SLS021 | Clear water; bright sun |
| Green Sardine | SLS022 | Green water; sardine forage; kelp edge |
| Green Black | SLS023 | Kelp edge; calico bass; low visibility |
| Scrambled Egg | SLS024 | Overcast; low light; all-around producer |
| Blue and White | SLS7X-BLWT | Anchovy forage; clear blue water |
Tackle Express Tips
- For calico bass on the kelp edge, Green Black and Green Sardine are the two most consistent colors. Fish tight to the kelp canopy β cast so the iron lands within a foot of the kelp line and start your retrieve immediately. Calico bass strike fast and close to cover; a hesitant presentation gives them time to return to structure.
- At 2.1 oz, the 7X Jr pairs best with a 7β8 ft spinning rod in the 15β25 lb class or a light conventional setup with similar ratings. Too heavy a rod overpowers the iron and prevents it from working correctly on the surface; too light and you lose casting distance and the ability to drive a hookset.
- For yellowtail that are on top but refusing heavier irons, step down to the 7X Jr and speed up your retrieve significantly β fast enough that the iron skips and skitters. This triggers reaction strikes from fish that are watching but not committing to slower presentations.
FAQ
What's the difference between the 7X Jr and the 7X Light?
Both are surface irons but different sizes. The 7X Jr is 2.1 oz at 5Β 3/8" β lighter and shorter, designed for light-tackle calico bass and finesse yellowtail fishing. The 7X Light is 3.5 oz at 6Β 3/8" β heavier and longer, casts farther and works better in wind or when you need more distance. Choose the 7X Jr for lighter setups and picky fish; choose the 7X Light when you need casting distance or heavier current.
What hook setup works best for the 7X Jr?
For calico bass, a single Siwash hook (Owner Stinger Siwash 2/0β3/0) is the local standard β better hookup rate in cover and less risk of fouling on kelp. For yellowtail and open-water species, a small treble (Owner ST-36 or similar in #2β1/0) gives more hook exposure for faster-moving fish. Match hook size to the split ring β don't oversize the hook or it will affect the iron's surface action.
Can I yo-yo the 7X Jr?
At 2.1 oz it's too light for effective yo-yo work at any meaningful depth. If you need yo-yo coverage with the same 7X Jr profile, the Salas 7X Jr Heavy (4.8 oz) is the same body built for the yo-yo retrieve.

Stick Jacket Casting rod sleeves work great for protecting your rod from scratches, broken guides, and tangles. Β The sleeve slips over your rod with ease and keeps the line from catching on other rods. Β
It acts like a trap and hold tight to the rod until you want to take it off. Β The brass grommet on the end allows you to hang it up on the wall without falling out (without the reel.) Β
The jacket falls short of covering the entire rod, it usually stops short enough to have a lure tied on and attached to the hook keeper without hanging up. Β We recommend not putting a lure on the guides, this will result in snagging on the Stick Jacket.
For rods up to 7-1/2' Long and 3-7/8" round.Β Mainly freshwater rods or saltwater inshore rods.

The PK-7 is what you throw when you want to change who shows up. Seven inches and 1.3 ounces of paddle-tail profile β it doesn't out-fish the PK-5 on numbers, and it isn't supposed to. It calls up a different class of fish.
Short version: 7", 1.3 oz, two baits per pack, weedless on an 8/0 hook. Bigger meal, heavier gear, fewer bites, better fish.
When to Size Up
The PK-5 matches what calicos eat most of the year. The PK-7 doesn't try to β it deliberately over-matches the bait in the water, and that's the point. Reasons to reach for it:
- The bait in the water is genuinely big. Full-size mackerel and larger smelt on the surface means a 5" bait is the small option, not the natural one.
- You're culling for size. A big profile filters out the small ones and pulls fish that were ignoring your other bait.
- Yellowtail are in the mix. A 7" bait is a reasonable meal for a yellow in a way a 5" isn't.
- Dirty or deep water. When visibility drops, displacement matters more than detail, and this bait moves considerably more water.
What It Takes to Fish It
This is not a light-tackle bait. A 1.3 oz bait on a 3/4 oz head is over two ounces before the fish shows up. Fish it on a rod with the backbone to load and cast that, and enough tip left to still work the bait β a light swimbait stick will fold on the cast and you'll never get the distance or the hookset.
Match an 8/0 hook to the body. Run the point up through the belly so it sits flush in the slot β buried too deep costs hookups, riding proud costs the weedless advantage. At this hook size the gap is generous, and getting it seated straight matters more than it does on the smaller baits.
The plastisol is the same firm formula as the rest of the line: slightly less tail flutter than the softest baits on the shelf, considerably more fish per bait. At two per pack, that durability is doing real work on your cost per trip.
On an Umbrella Rig
Five PK-7s is a heavy package β roughly 6.5 oz of plastic before you add heads. It builds the biggest school in the Pickle Kick lineup and it demands a rod to match.
| What you need | Quantity | Packs to buy |
|---|---|---|
| PK-7 swimbaits | 5 (one per arm) | 3 packs β 6 baits, 1 spare |
| Swing heads, bottom two arms | 2 Γ 3/4 oz | 1 pack |
| Swing heads, top three arms | 3 Γ 1/2 oz | 2 packs |
| The rig itself | 1 | 1 PK-Rig |
Straight talk: a five-arm PK-7 rig is the most expensive and most demanding build in this lineup. If it's your first umbrella rig, build it with PK-5s and save this configuration for when you know the rig swims right and your rod can handle it.
Our crew wrote a photo-by-photo guide covering the arm bend, keel weighting, bait sizing by location, and how to keep five arms of hooks out of every other rod in the rack.
Read the full umbrella rig setup guide βPicking a Color
At this size, profile is doing most of the work and color is doing less than it does on a 5" bait. What still matters is contrast against the water:
| Conditions | What to reach for |
|---|---|

Pro Tips from the Tackle Express Crew
- Give it a full day before you judge it. The PK-7 gets fewer bites than the PK-5 by design. Switching back after an hour of quiet is how most anglers never find out what it does.
- Slow down further than you think. A big bait moving fast reads as wrong. The tail loads up at a crawl.
- Match the head to the depth, not to the bait's size. A 1.3 oz bait doesn't automatically want a heavy head β use the lightest one that holds your zone.
- Check your rod before you buy the pack. Two ounces of bait and head on an under-gunned stick is a bad cast and a worse hookset.
Common Mistakes
- Undersizing the hook. This body takes an 8/0. A 5/0 from your PK-5 box will not clear it on the hookset.
- Fishing it on PK-5 tackle. The single most common reason this bait disappoints people.
- Throwing it when the bait in the water is small. Over-matching is a deliberate tactic, not a default. When the fish are keyed on 3" bait, size down.
- Buying two packs for an umbrella rig. Two per pack, five arms. You need three.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many baits come in a pack?
Two.
What hook size does the PK-7 take?
8/0. The 4/0 and 5/0 hooks that fit a PK-5 will not clear this body.
Why does a pack cost less than a pack of PK-5s?
Because it holds two baits instead of four. Per bait, the PK-7 is $8.50 against the PK-5's $4.75.
PK-5 or PK-7?
PK-5 is the everyday size and matches what calicos eat most of the year. Go PK-7 when the bait in the water is genuinely big, when you're culling for size, when yellowtail are in the mix, or when visibility is poor and you need displacement.
What rod do I need for it?
Enough backbone to load and cast two-plus ounces of bait and head, with enough tip left to work the bait and drive an 8/0 hook. A light swimbait rod will fold on the cast.
What jig head weight should I use?
Match the head to the depth you're fishing, not to the bait's size. Use the lightest head that holds your zone β too much weight drags the nose down and kills the tail.
How many packs do I need for a five-arm umbrella rig?
Three. Five arms, two baits per pack β you'll finish with one spare.
Is it weedless?
Yes, when the hook point sits flush in the body slot. That's what lets it come through kelp and rock without loading up.

The Owner Mutu Light Circle Hook is the lighter-wire sibling of the Ringed Mutu, built for smaller baits, lighter line, and situations where bait action matters as much as hook strength. The light wire keeps anchovies, smelt, and small sardines lively longer, while the unique offset hangnail point delivers approximately 90% mouth-hooking rates β fish are hooked in the corner of the mouth, not gut-hooked, making release easy. Available in sizes 8 through 7/0 in Black Chrome finish.
As with any circle hook, never set the hook. Point the rod tip at the fish, wind until the rod loads up, then raise the rod tip slowly.
Key Features
- Light Wire Construction β Keeps small baits lively longer and minimizes bait damage.
- Offset Hangnail Point β ~90% mouth-hooking rate; fish hooked in corner of mouth, not gut-hooked.

Tackle Express Tips:
- Thinner wire hooks don't injure the bait as much and therefore let it swim better.Β These hooks are fairly thin so keep that in mind if you're targeting larger fish.
- Don't set the hook when you get bit, simply turn the hook and hang on.
- Set the drag on your reel lighter so you don't bend the hook pulling too hard.
- Fish lighter line than you normally would, the lighter the wire of the hook the lighter the line and drag pressure.
- These hooks are great if the bite gets tough and you need to downsize your tackle.Β Often times that make a big difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Whatβs the difference between the Mutu Light and the Ringed Mutu? β The Mutu Light uses lighter wire with no ring on the eye β designed for smaller baits and lighter line. The Ringed Mutu uses heavier wire with a welded ring eye for bigger fish and heavier applications.
- What size Mutu Light is best for anchovies? β Size 4 to 1/0 depending on anchovy size. Smaller anchovies take a size 4 or 6; larger anchovies work well on a size 1 or 1/0.
- Do I need to set the hook? β No. Point the rod tip at the fish and wind until the rod loads up, then raise the rod tip slowly. The circle geometry self-sets in the corner of the mouth.
- Is the Mutu Light good for rockfish? β Yes. Sizes 2β1 are commonly used for rockfish on cut bait and small live baits. Circle geometry makes release easy.

TheΒ Nomad TackleΒ VERTREX MAXΒ soft vibe is all about maximum vibration and maximum depth. It has a lifelike action that sinks level and straight, getting down to the fish faster. The deep body profile combined with finely tuned internal weights delivers a soft vibration bait with a huge vibration at super slow speed and even more vibration at higher speeds. The amount of vibration you can achieve at slow speeds just gently hopping this lure on or near the bottom is what sets theΒ Vertrex MaxΒ apart from all other soft vibration baits. The deeper body with a wide belly design ensures that even at slow speeds theΒ Vertrex MaxΒ is vibrating and attracting attention. The Vertrex features a full wire internal construction for extra strength and is fitted with the ultimate BKK hooks so you can fish it straight out of the box.
Vertrex Max Soft VibeΒ is suited to be fished at depths from 40ft-200ft of water. TheΒ Vertrex MaxΒ can be fished in a similar way to a slow pitch jig. The best technique is to drop them to the bottom and then use 3-10 slow lifts with a short pause off the bottom to get it vibrating on the lift and then as it glides back down on the drop it will often get hit. They can be worked fast or slow, but the Vertrex Max is has huge vibration at slow speeds making it highly effective for this technique.

The Halco Roosta PopperΒ 160 is perfect for targeting game fish that are aggressively Β attacking bait fish near or on the surface.
