The standard SoCal surface iron
The Tady 45 Surface Iron is the iron most Southern California anglers tie on first when yellowtail are feeding on top. At about 3 oz and 6¼ inches, it's the longest Tady surface iron and sits in the middle of the lineup for weight: heavy enough to cast well, light enough to stay in the upper water column. On a steady wind it tracks straight and swims with a tight side-to-side kick.
Why anglers reach for the Tady 45
- Proven swimming action: Kicks side to side on a straight, steady retrieve. No rod work needed.
- Long-casting size: About 3 oz and 6¼ inches, easy to work on an 8'–9' jig stick.
- Treble hook: The traditional surface-iron setup. The Chrome Blue Single Tuna Hook color comes with a single hook.
- Color range: The widest color selection of any Tady iron we carry, from natural sardine patterns to crackle, chrome and holographic finishes.
How to fish the Tady 45
Cast past feeding fish or working birds, wait a couple of seconds, then wind at a steady medium-fast speed in high gear with the rod tip pointed down. Don't pump the rod; the iron makes its own action. If fish follow without biting, speed up before you slow down. Every iron swims a little differently, so if one isn't getting bit while fish are around, tie on another.
- Straight burn: Steady wind, rod tip down, no pauses.
- Burn and drop: After 15–20 cranks, drop the rod tip and let the iron flutter for a few seconds, then wind again. Most strikes come on the first cranks after the drop.
- Bird-working: Cast beyond diving birds and retrieve through the bait.
Best for
- Species: Yellowtail, bonito, barracuda, calico bass, tuna and white seabass.
- Forage: Sardines, anchovies and similar-size baitfish.
- Conditions: Light to moderate wind with fish feeding near the surface.
- Gear: 8'–9' jig stick with a high-gear conventional reel; 65 lb braid with a 3–6 foot top shot of 30–40 lb monofilament, or straight 30–40 lb mono.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Tady 45 weigh?
About 2.9 to 3 oz depending on the finish, with a 6¼-inch body.
Does the Tady 45 come with a treble or single hook?
The standard Tady 45 comes with a treble hook. Colors labeled Single Tuna Hook come with a single hook.
What line should I use?
Use 65 lb braid with a 3–6 foot top shot of 30–40 lb monofilament, or straight 30–40 lb mono. A 30–40 lb fluorocarbon leader also works.
How fast should I retrieve it?
Start medium-fast in high gear with the rod tip down and keep the speed up through the whole retrieve. A slow iron gets followed instead of eaten.
Should I choose the Tady 45 or the 4/0 Sr. Light?
Choose the 45 for most surface fishing on sardine-size bait in light to moderate wind. Choose the 4/0 Sr. Light when you need more casting weight or a bigger profile.
Heavy 4/0 power when fish stay deep
The Tady Lure Yo Yo 4/0 Iron is the heavy deep-water jig Southern California and Baja anglers reach for when yellowtail, tuna, white seabass and other pelagics are holding below the surface. At approximately 5.9 oz and 5¾ inches long, it's the heaviest Tady we carry. It sinks fast, cuts through current and produces the erratic high-speed yo-yo action that triggers reaction strikes.
Not to be confused with the Tady 4/0 Light or 4/0 Sr. Light, which are surface irons.
Why anglers carry the 4/0 Heavy
- 5.9 oz heavy weight: Gets down quickly and stays workable in current and deep water.
- Large 4/0 profile: Matches larger forage such as mackerel and sardines.
- Fast yo-yo action: Built for a quick, steady retrieve from depth.
- Proven Tady shape: Creates the flash and erratic kick that deep-feeding predators respond to.
- Chrome and painted finishes: A wide range of colors, from natural baitfish patterns to glow and holographic finishes.
- Hook options: Treble hook as standard, plus the Glow White Single (White Seabass) option.
- Hand-crafted in the USA: Built for repeated use on demanding saltwater trips.
How to fish the Tady 4/0
Drop the iron to the depth where fish are holding, or send it toward the bottom when conditions allow. Then engage the reel and wind fast and steadily. The heavy body creates the action as it climbs, while the weight helps the jig reach deep fish and stay effective when current is moving.
- Deep-water yo-yo: Drop, engage and retrieve quickly through the strike zone.
- Offshore banks and high spots: Keep the jig moving around deep structure where fish stack up.
- Baja and island trips: Use the 4/0 when fish will not come up to a surface presentation.
Best for
- Species: Yellowtail, tuna, white seabass, grouper and other deep-water fish.
- Depth: Deep structure, offshore banks, high spots and current-swept water.
- Forage: Larger baitfish such as mackerel and sardines.
- Technique: Fast, steady yo-yo retrieve from depth.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Tady 4/0 Heavy weigh?
The Tady 4/0 Heavy weighs approximately 5.9 oz and measures about 5¾ inches long.
Is the 4/0 Heavy the same as the 4/0 Light?
No. The 4/0 Light (about 2.6–2.8 oz) and 4/0 Sr. Light (about 3.5–3.7 oz) are surface irons. The 4/0 Heavy is a 5.9 oz yo-yo iron for fish holding deep.
What line and leader should I use?
A common heavy-iron setup uses 50–65 lb braid with a 40–60 lb fluorocarbon or monofilament leader, adjusted for the structure, current and fish you are targeting.
Which hook option should I choose?
Choose a standard treble-hook color for the traditional 4/0 presentation. Choose Glow White Single (White Seabass) when you want the single-hook option for white seabass fishing.
What retrieve works best?
Drop to depth, engage the reel and wind fast and steadily through the strike zone. The heavy profile creates its erratic kick as it climbs.
Bring serious holding power to big-bait saltwater presentations with the Dolphin Gitzem Jig Heads 8/0 Hook. Built around an ultra-strong, corrosion-resistant 8/0 Mustad hook, this winged jig head is made for anglers targeting powerful fish around inshore structure, deep reefs, and open offshore water.
Heavy-Duty Hardware for Big Baits
The 8/0 Gitzem pairs with large soft plastics, flukes, swimbaits, live bait, and strip baits. Its balanced winged head helps the bait swim naturally, while the molded bait keeper helps hold your trailer in place when current, structure, and hard strikes put extra pressure on the rig.
Why Anglers Choose the 8/0 Gitzem
- 8/0 Mustad hook: Ultra-strong construction for powerful saltwater predators and demanding fights.
- Winged hydrodynamic head: Helps create a natural swimming action and keeps the bait working through the water.
- Secure bait keeper: Locks large soft plastics, squid, live bait, and strip baits onto the shank.
- Saltwater-ready construction: Corrosion-resistant components stand up to harsh marine conditions.
- Six color choices: Select White, Glow, Orange, Red, Pink, or Chartreuse to match the light and water conditions.
Target Species and Applications
Rig the 8/0 for white seabass, yellowtail, tarpon, cobia, snook, grouper, amberjack, and other strong saltwater species. Fish it around inshore structure, over deep offshore reefs, or anywhere a larger bait profile and heavy-duty hook are part of the plan.
Choose the 8/0 When...
- You are fishing large soft plastics, flukes, swimbaits, live bait, or strip baits.
- You need a stronger hook for powerful fish and heavy saltwater pressure.
- You want weight options from 1/2 oz through 4 oz for different depths and current conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What baits work with an 8/0 Gitzem Jig Head?
The 8/0 is designed for larger soft plastics, flukes, swimbaits, live bait, and strip baits when you want a substantial saltwater presentation.
What fish can I target with the 8/0?
Use it for white seabass, yellowtail, tarpon, cobia, snook, grouper, amberjack, and other hard-pulling saltwater species.
Which weight should I choose?
Use lighter weights for shallower water and slower presentations, then move up in weight as depth, current, or wind demands more control. The lineup runs from 1/2 oz to 4 oz.
The Sudden Impact 8" Fluke is a large-profile soft jerkbait built for anglers throwing big plastics at white seabass, halibut, and calico bass along the Southern California coast. At 8 inches and 1.2 oz, it matches the mackerel and squid-sized forage these fish are keyed on, and it carries enough mass to cast well on conventional and heavier spinning gear without a heavy head.
Rigged on an 8/0 swimbait jig head, it fishes as a slow-rolled or yo-yo presentation over structure, kelp edges, and sand-to-reef transitions. Rigged weightless on an 8/0 EWG hook, it glides and darts on slack line for shallow water and pressured fish.
What Makes This Bait Work
- 8" profile — sized to match adult squid and small mackerel, the forage white seabass and larger halibut feed on
- 1.2 oz body weight — enough mass to cast weightless, and enough body to stay down on a slow retrieve
- Soft, flexible plastic — the tail section flutters on the pause and on the drop rather than going stiff
- Two proven West Coast colors — Pearl White for clear water and bright conditions, Market Squid for low light, dirty water, and squid spawn
- Takes an 8/0 hook — the body is sized for an 8/0 jig head or 8/0 EWG, not a smaller bass-sized hook
- Sold as a single bait — buy the exact colors and quantity you need
Best Uses
Target Species
- White seabass — slow-rolled on an 8/0 head near kelp and structure, especially during squid spawn
- California halibut — dragged and hopped along sand flats and sand-to-structure edges
- Calico bass — worked over shallow kelp stringers and boiler rocks
- Striped bass — bays, harbors, and river mouths on a slow, steady retrieve
- Largemouth bass (trophy) — weightless glide for big fish on Castaic and Pyramid
Techniques
- Slow roll — 8/0 jig head, steady retrieve just off the bottom or just under the kelp canopy
- Yo-yo — lift and drop; most bites come on the fall, so watch your line
- Weightless glide — 8/0 EWG, twitch-twitch-pause; the bait darts side to side and hangs on the pause
- Bottom drag — for halibut, keep contact with the sand and pause every few feet
Choosing Your Jig Head
This bait takes an 8/0 hook. Head weight is the variable — pick it based on depth and current, not on the size of the bait.
| Conditions | Suggested Head Weight | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Shallow kelp, calm, under 25 ft | 1/2 oz | Keeps the bait high in the water column and preserves the glide |
| 25–50 ft, moderate current | 3/4 oz | Gets down without killing the flutter on the drop |
| Deep structure or strong current | 1 oz or 2 oz | Maintains bottom contact and bite detection in moving water |
| Weightless / shallow finesse | 8/0 EWG hook, no head | The bait's 1.2 oz body carries the cast on its own |
Match the hook, not just the weight. A 4/0 head is too small for an 8" body — the hook point sits too far forward and you will miss fish. Rig this bait on an 8/0 head. The Lead Masters Fluke Head is purpose-built for baits like this one and comes in 1/2 oz, 3/4 oz, 1 oz, and 2 oz, so it covers every row of the table above.
Color Selection
| Color | Best Conditions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Pearl White | Clear water, bright sun, mid-day | Baitfish imitation — mackerel, sardine, smelt |
| Market Squid | Low light, dirty water, night, squid spawn | The default choice when squid are on the grounds |

| Leader | 25–40 lb fluorocarbon; go heavier around kelp and structure |
Pro Tips
- Most of your bites come on the fall. Keep a slight bow in the line on the drop and watch where the line enters the water — you will see the bite before you feel it.
- Nose-hook it straight. If the bait sits crooked on the head, it will spin on the retrieve and kill the action. Lay the hook along the body before you thread it and mark where the point should exit.
- Slow down for white seabass. The retrieve that feels too slow is usually the right one, particularly during a squid spawn when fish are gorging and lazy.
Common Mistakes
- Using a hook that's too small. A bass-sized 4/0 leaves the point buried in an 8" body. Use 8/0.
- Over-weighting the head. Too much lead on shallow kelp drops the bait past the strike zone and flattens the glide. Start light and add weight only if you can't hold bottom.
- Retrieving too fast. This is a big, slow-moving profile. Burning it looks unnatural and pulls it away from structure-holding fish.
- Setting the hook too early. On a soft plastic this size, let the fish load the rod before you swing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size hook does the 8" Fluke take?
8/0. Either an 8/0 swimbait jig head or an 8/0 EWG hook for weightless rigging. A 4/0 is too small for this body length.
Is this sold in a pack or as a single bait?
Single bait. The listed price is for one 8" soft jerkbait in the color you select.
Can I fish this in freshwater?
Yes. It works as a trophy largemouth bait rigged weightless on an 8/0 EWG, particularly on local lakes with large trout and shad forage.
Which color should I start with?
Market Squid in low light, dirty water, or during a squid spawn. Pearl White in clear water and bright sun. If you're buying one of each, that covers most Southern California conditions.
How do I rig it weightless?
Thread an 8/0 EWG hook through the nose, run it down the body, and exit the point through the top so the bait sits straight. Keep the point exposed or lightly skin-hooked so it drives home on the hookset.
What jig head weight should I use?
1/2 oz for shallow kelp and calm conditions, 3/4 oz for 25–50 feet or moderate current, and 1 oz or 2 oz for deep structure and strong current. See the jig head table above.
Will this work for halibut?
Yes. Fish it on an 8/0 head, dragged and hopped along sand flats and along the edges where sand meets structure. Pause it frequently — halibut ambush from the bottom.
