Calico Bass Lures

The standard SoCal surface iron

The Tady 45 Surface Iron is the iron most Southern California anglers tie on first when yellowtail are feeding on top. At about 3 oz and 6¼ inches, it's the longest Tady surface iron and sits in the middle of the lineup for weight: heavy enough to cast well, light enough to stay in the upper water column. On a steady wind it tracks straight and swims with a tight side-to-side kick.

Why anglers reach for the Tady 45

• Proven swimming action: Kicks side to side on a straight, steady retrieve. No rod work needed.
• Long-casting size: About 3 oz and 6¼ inches, easy to work on an 8'–9' jig stick.
• Treble hook: The traditional surface-iron setup. The Chrome Blue Single Tuna Hook color comes with a single hook.
• Color range: The widest color selection of any Tady iron we carry, from natural sardine patterns to crackle, chrome and holographic finishes.

How to fish the Tady 45

Cast past feeding fish or working birds, wait a couple of seconds, then wind at a steady medium-fast speed in high gear with the rod tip pointed down. Don't pump the rod; the iron makes its own action. If fish follow without biting, speed up before you slow down. Every iron swims a little differently, so if one isn't getting bit while fish are around, tie on another.

• Straight burn: Steady wind, rod tip down, no pauses.
• Burn and drop: After 15–20 cranks, drop the rod tip and let the iron flutter for a few seconds, then wind again. Most strikes come on the first cranks after the drop.
• Bird-working: Cast beyond diving birds and retrieve through the bait.

Best for

• Species: Yellowtail, bonito, barracuda, calico bass, tuna and white seabass.
• Forage: Sardines, anchovies and similar-size baitfish.
• Conditions: Light to moderate wind with fish feeding near the surface.
• Gear: 8'–9' jig stick with a high-gear conventional reel; 65 lb braid with a 3–6 foot top shot of 30–40 lb monofilament, or straight 30–40 lb mono.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Tady 45 weigh?

About 2.9 to 3 oz depending on the finish, with a 6¼-inch body.

Does the Tady 45 come with a treble or single hook?

The standard Tady 45 comes with a treble hook. Colors labeled Single Tuna Hook come with a single hook.

What line should I use?

Use 65 lb braid with a 3–6 foot top shot of 30–40 lb monofilament, or straight 30–40 lb mono. A 30–40 lb fluorocarbon leader also works.

How fast should I retrieve it?

Start medium-fast in high gear with the rod tip down and keep the speed up through the whole retrieve. A slow iron gets followed instead of eaten.

Should I choose the Tady 45 or the 4/0 Sr. Light?

Choose the 45 for most surface fishing on sardine-size bait in light to moderate wind. Choose the 4/0 Sr. Light when you need more casting weight or a bigger profile.

The Deps Sakamata Shad is a versatile soft jerkbait built for sharp, baitfish-style direction changes. Its smooth body moves with low water resistance, while keels along both sides help guide the bait through quick darts and jumps that can trigger reaction bites from bass.

Make a Fleeing Baitfish Look Convincing

When ordinary fluke-style baits track too predictably, the Sakamata Shad gives you a livelier presentation. Fish it weightless near the surface to imitate escaping forage, or take it deeper on a split-shot or Carolina rig when bass are holding closer to the bottom.

One Bait, Several Ways to Fish

The Sakamata Shad can cover water quickly or stay in the strike zone with a slower presentation. Choose smaller sizes when bass are focused on compact forage, and step up to the larger profiles when bigger baitfish are present or you want a more noticeable target.

Best For

• Weightless soft-jerkbait retrieves
• Fast twitch-and-pause presentations
• Split-shot and Carolina rigs
• Freshwater bass fishing
• Clear water, baitfish activity, and reaction-bite situations

Key Features

• Dual side keels help create the signature darting action
• Smooth body produces low water resistance
• Variable salt content by size balances action and material strength
• Available in sizes from 2 to 8 inches
• Multiple forage-matching color options

Models & Specs

Additional 2, 3, and 4.5-inch variants are available. Select a size and color above to see current options.

Complete the Rig

Pair it with Owner Offset Worm Hooks for a clean soft-plastic setup, or use a Top Brass Carolina Ready Rig to work the bait near the bottom. For a more lifelike finish in a focused 6-inch profile, compare the Deps Sakamata Shad Real Soft Bait.

Tackle Express Tips

• Start weightless with two quick twitches followed by a pause, then adjust the pause length until the fish respond.
• Keep line slack between twitches so the bait can change direction instead of pulling straight ahead.
• Match the size to the forage you see, then use brighter or higher-contrast colors when visibility drops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fish the Sakamata Shad weightless?
Yes. A weightless rig is a strong choice for working near the surface and creating an escaping-baitfish presentation.

Can it be fished near the bottom?
Yes. Use it on a split-shot or Carolina rig to make the bait dart close to bottom cover.

Which size should I choose?
Choose a smaller profile when fish are feeding on compact forage. Move to a larger size when bigger baitfish are present or you want a more visible offering.

Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 CIF Surf Jerkbait

The surf is pounding, the tide is moving, and somewhere in the wash a halibut is hunting. Cast the Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 into the break, let it work at 2 feet, and hold on. Part of Lucky Craft's California Inshore Fishing (CIF) lineup, the Flash Minnow 110 has been a go-to for inshore saltwater and surf anglers for years — proven on halibut, large perch, corvina, and just about anything else that swims in the surf zone.

The Flash Minnow 110 is as versatile as it is effective. Straight-wind it for a steady swimming action, or rip and pause to trigger reaction strikes — both techniques work, and alternating between them on successive casts is a great way to dial in what the fish want on any given day. For best results, pair it with a 7'6" to 8' medium to medium-heavy rod with fast action, and spool up with 12 lb fluorocarbon for durability in sand and rocks.

Features

• Saltwater-grade tin hooks for strength and corrosion resistance
• Versatile presentation — straight retrieve or rip-and-pause both produce
• Proven on halibut, corvina, large perch, calico bass, and inshore exotics
• Part of Lucky Craft's CIF (California Inshore Fishing) lineup
• Wide range of proven color patterns for varying water clarity

Specs

• Length: 4.5"
• Weight: 5/8 oz
• Depth: 2 ft
• Hooks: Saltwater-grade tin trebles

Recommended Setup

• Rod: 7'6"–8' medium to medium-heavy, fast action
• Line: 12 lb fluorocarbon (Seaguar Abrazx recommended for sand and rock durability)

Best For

• Techniques: Straight retrieve, rip-and-pause, surf casting
• Species: Halibut, Corvina, Perch, Calico Bass, Striped Bass, and inshore exotics
• Environments: Surf, inshore saltwater, sandy beaches, rocky points

Built for Distance, Designed to Drop

The Shimano Current Sniper is a slim, hydrodynamic metal jig engineered for serious saltwater anglers who need maximum casting distance and a natural, enticing fall. The tapered profile cuts through wind and water resistance to deliver long, accurate casts from shore, pier, or boat — then falls with a tight, fluttering action that mimics a wounded baitfish on the drop. Whether you're working feeding yellowtail off the kelp, casting into breaking tuna, or vertical jigging structure for calico bass, the Current Sniper gets the job done.

The Fall That Triggers the Bite

Most strikes on metal jigs happen on the fall — not the retrieve. The Current Sniper's slim profile and balanced weighting create a controlled, side-to-side flutter on the drop that predatory fish can't ignore. The 2026 color lineup includes both natural baitfish patterns (Blue Sardine, Green Mackerel, Brown Aji, Full Silver) and high-visibility attractor colors (S Back Purple, S Chartreuse Silver) that cover every light condition from early morning topwater to deep midday vertical presentations.

One Jig, Multiple Techniques

The Current Sniper's versatility is what sets it apart. It's equally effective on a fast horizontal retrieve through a bait school, a slow vertical drop along a kelp edge, or a suspended presentation at a specific depth. The 8-size range — from 21g for light inshore work to 120g for deep offshore vertical jigging — means you can match the right weight to the depth, current, and target species without switching to a different jig family.

When to Reach for the Current Sniper

• Yellowtail are holding on kelp edges or offshore structure and won't commit to a surface iron
• Tuna are breaking on bait and you need maximum casting distance to reach the school
• Calico bass are stacked on structure and a vertical presentation is more effective than casting
• Surf fishing for corbina, halibut, or stripers where a slim profile and long cast are critical
• You need one jig that works from 21g inshore to 120g offshore without changing your approach

Best Retrieve Techniques

• Cast and Retrieve: Cast into breaking fish or feeding zones, let the jig sink briefly, then retrieve with a fast, steady wind — the slim profile creates a tight, darting action that triggers reaction strikes
• Vertical Jigging: Drop to the bottom or target depth, then work the jig with short, sharp lifts and controlled drops — the flutter on the fall is when most strikes occur
• Slow Fall / Suspended: Cast out, count the jig down to a specific depth, then retrieve slowly to keep it in the strike zone — deadly for suspended yellowtail and tuna
• Yo-Yo: Let the jig sink to the bottom, rip it up 5–10 feet, and let it flutter back down — effective for calico bass and rockfish on structure

Best Conditions

• Offshore kelp beds and structure for yellowtail and calico bass
• Open water tuna fishing when fish are breaking on bait or holding at depth
• Surf and pier fishing for halibut, corbina, and striped bass
• Any situation where casting distance and a natural falling action are the priority
• Clear to lightly stained saltwater where the jig's profile and flash carry

Best For

• Species: Yellowtail, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Calico Bass, Halibut, Striped Bass, Rockfish, Corbina
• Techniques: Cast and Retrieve, Vertical Jigging, Slow Fall, Yo-Yo, Surf Casting
• Conditions: Kelp edges, offshore structure, open water, surf, pier

Key Features

• Slim, hydrodynamic profile for maximum casting distance
• Balanced weighting for a natural, fluttering fall action
• Effective for both horizontal casting and vertical jigging
• 2026 color lineup — 7 patterns covering natural baitfish and high-visibility attractor colors
• 8 sizes from 21g to 120g for inshore to offshore applications
• Durable construction built for hard-striking saltwater species

Tackle Express Tips

• Match Weight to Depth and Current: Use lighter weights (21–42g) for shallow inshore work, surf, and pier fishing. Step up to 60–80g for kelp edge and mid-depth offshore work. Go 100–120g when you need to get deep fast in strong current or target fish holding at 100+ feet.
• Color Selection by Conditions: In clear water with good light, natural patterns like Blue Sardine, Green Mackerel, and Full Silver are go-to choices. In low light, early morning, or overcast conditions, S Back Purple and S Chartreuse Silver stand out. Brown Aji is a sleeper pick when fish are keyed on small baitfish or squid.
• Let It Fall: Resist the urge to start your retrieve immediately after the cast. Count the jig down to the target depth — most strikes happen on the initial fall. If you're not getting bit on the retrieve, slow down and let the jig flutter longer on the drop.

FAQ

What size Current Sniper should I use for yellowtail?
For kelp edge yellowtail in 30–60 feet, the 42–60g sizes are the most versatile. If fish are holding deeper or current is strong, step up to 80g. For open-water yellowtail on the surface or in the top 20 feet, the 28–42g sizes cast farther and fall more naturally.

Can I use the Current Sniper from the surf?
Yes — the 21–42g sizes are ideal for surf fishing. The slim profile casts well on spinning gear with 20–30 lb braid and a fluorocarbon leader. Target halibut, corbina, and striped bass by casting parallel to the beach and retrieving through the trough.

What's the difference between the "A" and "S" color codes?
The "A" prefix indicates a natural, translucent baitfish pattern (e.g., A Blue Sardine, A Green Mackerel). The "S" prefix indicates a solid, high-visibility attractor pattern (e.g., S Back Purple, S Chartreuse Silver). Use "A" patterns in clear water and good light; use "S" patterns in low light, stained water, or when fish need a more aggressive trigger.

What size Current Sniper is best when fishing for tuna?
For breaking tuna, the 42–80g sizes offer a strong balance of casting distance and manageable retrieve. Move up to 100–120g when tuna are holding deeper or the current is strong and you need the jig to reach the strike zone quickly.  The most important thing to keep in mind with all fish is match the size of the bait they are already feeding on.

The Shimano Current Sniper Jerkbait is designed with Shimano's unique Propulsion Weight Transfer System for exceptional long distance casting - allowing the internal weight to slide back during the cast, and then springing forward when the lure hits the water. Ideal to target both calico bass and Yellowtail in SoCal waters and stripers on the East coast.  This was previously known as the Coltsniper.

Along with covering lots of water from lengthy casts - up to 22-percent longer than similar weight and length lures, anglers can work the Currentsniper jerkbait in a tight wobble action, or slide action by jerking it. With a slow floating design, it can be fished down to 3 - to 5-foot depths. Chemical finish treble hooks are featured at both mid-body and at the tail.

When fish are breaking the surface or just subsurface, the Shimano Current Sniper Sinking Stickbait is going to be deadly!  This sinking stickbait is perfect for when fish are feeding on the surface and uses superior finishes and stout 3X strong hooks and split rings.  There are several retrieval methods that can be used effectively on many different predator fish.

This was previously known as the Coltsniper.

Subsurface walk-the-dog is a very effective method and creates the illusion of a fleeing baitfish.  This can be more easily created using a spinning setup like the Shimano Thunnus and Shimano Terez but conventional rods and reels may also be used. Moving the rod tip while winding the reel with short pauses will cuase the bait to move left and right.  It's very important to give the lure some slack after pulling it each time.  If slack isn't given after each pull, the lure will not have the line needed to glide momentarily before you pull it again.  Skipping the lure on the surface is also a technique that can invoke a strike. Cast as far as you can and don't let it sink out.  Wind back the lure as fast as you can so that it skips on the surface.

We are excited to use the Shimano Current Sniper Stickbait on yellowtail, tuna, calico bass and striper here in Southern California.  We are sure it will work for any agressive predator fish you have.  Ideally we would use a 8,000 to 12,000 size Shimano Thunus or Stella spinning reel and an 8' to 9' Shimano Terez or Ocea Plugger spinning rod.  Line class is going to depend on what you are fishing for but 50-80lb Power Pro with a 4-7 foot monofilament or fluorocarbon leader would be ideal.  The leader size will differ but 30-50lb line would be normal range for this type of fishing.  Using a split ring on the nose with a solid ring on the split ring would allow the lure to move correctly.  You can also tie a loop knot of your chose to allow lure movement.

Hookup Baits Large Jigs have to be one of the most popular sizes Hookup Baits produces, the 5/8oz Red Crab and Mint are known as the "White Seabass Special"

There are many ways to fish the hookup bait but casting it out and letting it fall on a tight line will pendulum it down in an arc.  This can be very effective since it allows the bait to swim as it falls.  This is effective when fish are suspended in the column and not on the top or bottom.

If fish are on the bottom, we like to let it sink to the bottom and pop it off the bottom and then allowing it to sink back down.  Continue this retrieve all the way back to the boat or shore.

If they are in the upper part of the column, cast and start retrieving soon after the lure hits the surface.  Most of the time a slow and steady retrieve works best but you can also burn it on the surface for very active surface feeding fish.

A fuller body with a softer flutter

The Tady Lure 9 Iron is about 3.5 to 3.6 oz and 4½ inches with a treble hook. Its body is fuller than the Tady AA or A2, so it flutters more softly on the drop instead of knifing straight down. It works cast and retrieved or yo-yo style, and it's a good choice jigged just off the bottom for a wide range of fish. Hand-crafted in the USA.

Why anglers reach for the Tady 9

• Fuller body: A softer, slower flutter on the drop than the AA or A2.
• 3.5–3.6 oz, 4½ inches: A mid-weight iron in a slightly shorter package.
• Cast or yo-yo: Works on a cast-and-wind retrieve or dropped and wound back from depth.
• Off-bottom jigging: A good choice worked just off the bottom around reef and structure.
• Treble hook: The traditional iron hook setup.
• Hand-crafted in the USA: Built with the consistency expected from Tady Lures.

How to fish the Tady 9

• Yo-yo: Drop to the depth where fish are marking, engage the reel and wind fast and steady back through the strike zone.
• Off the bottom: Drop to the bottom, lift and let the iron flutter back down, keeping it near structure.
• Cast and wind: When fish come up, cast past them and wind steadily with the rod tip down.

Best for

• Species: Yellowtail, calico bass, white seabass, rockfish and lingcod.
• Water: Kelp, rocky reef and bottom structure.
• Use case: When fish want a slower, softer fall rather than a jig that drops straight down.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Tady 9 weigh?

About 3.5 to 3.6 oz depending on the finish, with a 4½-inch body.

How is the Tady 9 different from the AA and A2?

The Tady 9 has a fuller body, so it flutters more softly on the drop. The Tady AA is slimmer and more versatile, and the Tady A2 is heavier and gets down faster.

Is the Tady 9 a fast-sinking jig?

No. Its fuller body gives it a softer, slower fall than the AA or A2. If you need to get down fast in current, use the A2 or the TLC.

What fish can I target with the Tady 9?

Yellowtail, calico bass, white seabass, rockfish, lingcod and other fish that hold around kelp, reef and bottom structure.

The Salas 7X Jr is 2.1 oz in a 5 3/8" body — the lightest iron Salas makes. It's built for finesse surface fishing: light line, light tackle, and situations where a full-size surface iron is too heavy to work correctly. At 2.1 oz the 7X Jr dances on the surface rather than pushing through it, creating the erratic side-to-side action that calico bass, picky yellowtail, and light-bite fish respond to when heavier irons get refused. If you're fishing 15–20 lb fluorocarbon on a spinning or light conventional setup, this is your iron.

Light Enough to Work, Heavy Enough to Cast

The challenge with light surface irons is castability — at 2.1 oz the 7X Jr is light enough to work the surface properly but still heavy enough to cast on appropriate tackle. On a 7–8 ft spinning rod in the 15–25 lb class you get adequate distance for calico and inshore yellowtail fishing without the setup being so heavy that the iron gets pushed underwater on the retrieve. This is the iron for calico bass kelp edge fishing, light-tackle yellowtail when the bite is picky, and any situation where a 3–5 oz iron is simply too much weight for the technique or the fish.

Hand-Cast in Southern California

Like all Salas irons, the 7X Jr is hand-cast in California — individually poured, not mass-produced offshore. Six colors cover the conditions most common in inshore and nearshore fishing: mint and sardine patterns for clear water, Green Black for kelp-edge calico situations, Scrambled Egg for low light, and Blue and White for anchovy-forage days.

The Right Pick If...

• You're fishing calico bass on the kelp edge with light spinning or conventional gear
• Yellowtail are on top but picky — refusing heavier irons and responding better to a smaller, lighter presentation
• You're fishing 15–25 lb fluorocarbon or light braid and want an iron that balances correctly on that tackle weight
• Fish are hitting small bait near the surface and a 3+ oz iron is too heavy to stay in the strike zone
• You want to pair with the 7X Jr Heavy for same-profile coverage from surface to mid-water column

Best Fishing Techniques

• Surface casting — fast erratic retrieve: Cast past the school or structure, engage immediately, and crank fast with rod tip up; the light body dances erratically on the surface and draws reaction strikes
• Slow surface walk: Reel slowly and let the iron wander side to side; effective for calico bass holding tight to kelp who want a slower-moving target
• Burn and pause: Fast retrieve with brief pauses; the iron flutters slightly on the pause and often draws the strike during the hesitation
• Near-surface swing: Cast across current and let the iron swing through the water column at 1–5 ft depth with a slow retrieve; works for yellowtail staged near the surface in current

Best Conditions

• Calm to moderate surface conditions where fish are visibly working on top
• Kelp edge and nearshore reef fishing for calico bass
• Light bait conditions — small sardines, anchovies, smelt
• Light-tackle setups: spinning or light conventional in the 15–25 lb class

Best For

• Calico bass — kelp edge and structure fishing with light gear
• Yellowtail — finesse surface fishing when fish are picky or on small bait
• Bonito and barracuda — fast surface retrieve; the light iron matches the small bait these species are often eating
• Any inshore species responding to light surface iron presentations

Key Features

• Weight: 2.1 oz
• Length: 5 3/8"
• Hand-cast in Southern California
• 6 color options covering sardine, mint, kelp-edge, and anchovy patterns
• Lightest iron in the Salas lineup — built for finesse surface presentations on light tackle
• Rigged with split ring; add a treble or single hook depending on target species

Color Guide

Tackle Express Tips

• For calico bass on the kelp edge, Green Black and Green Sardine are the two most consistent colors. Fish tight to the kelp canopy — cast so the iron lands within a foot of the kelp line and start your retrieve immediately. Calico bass strike fast and close to cover; a hesitant presentation gives them time to return to structure.
• At 2.1 oz, the 7X Jr pairs best with a 7–8 ft spinning rod in the 15–25 lb class or a light conventional setup with similar ratings. Too heavy a rod overpowers the iron and prevents it from working correctly on the surface; too light and you lose casting distance and the ability to drive a hookset.
• For yellowtail that are on top but refusing heavier irons, step down to the 7X Jr and speed up your retrieve significantly — fast enough that the iron skips and skitters. This triggers reaction strikes from fish that are watching but not committing to slower presentations.

FAQ

What's the difference between the 7X Jr and the 7X Light?
Both are surface irons but different sizes. The 7X Jr is 2.1 oz at 5 3/8" — lighter and shorter, designed for light-tackle calico bass and finesse yellowtail fishing. The 7X Light is 3.5 oz at 6 3/8" — heavier and longer, casts farther and works better in wind or when you need more distance. Choose the 7X Jr for lighter setups and picky fish; choose the 7X Light when you need casting distance or heavier current.

What hook setup works best for the 7X Jr?
For calico bass, a single Siwash hook (Owner Stinger Siwash 2/0–3/0) is the local standard — better hookup rate in cover and less risk of fouling on kelp. For yellowtail and open-water species, a small treble (Owner ST-36 or similar in #2–1/0) gives more hook exposure for faster-moving fish. Match hook size to the split ring — don't oversize the hook or it will affect the iron's surface action.

Can I yo-yo the 7X Jr?
At 2.1 oz it's too light for effective yo-yo work at any meaningful depth. If you need yo-yo coverage with the same 7X Jr profile, the Salas 7X Jr Heavy (4.8 oz) is the same body built for the yo-yo retrieve.

We all know longer casts mean more water covered and the Rapala X-Rap Long Cast allows you to do just that.  Rapala has increased the weight of the 14 size to 1 7/8oz from the original X-Rap which weighs 1 1/2oz.  That's 3/8oz more weight for approximately 25% additional casting distance.  If you make 100 casts at 30 feet per cast you'd cover 3000 feet.  By using the Rapala X-Rap Long Cast, that means you will cover 750 more feet in the same period of time!  That a lot of acreage covered just by using this lure.

We are excited about fishing this long cast version for yellowtail, calico bass, and tuna.  Often times the fish are boat shy and getting just a few yards more on a cast can make that difference between a good day and a great day.  They all feature 3X strong VMC single tin hooks for maximum penetration and strength.

Legendary West Coast Surface Iron Performance

The Salas Baby 5X Surface Iron Jigs are a proven fish-catching machine with decades of success on West Coast tuna, yellowtail, and dorado. Hand-crafted in Southern California with meticulous attention to detail, these legendary surface irons deliver the erratic swimming action and irresistible flash that trigger explosive strikes from aggressive pelagics. The Baby 5X size is perfectly balanced for long-distance casting and versatile enough to handle everything from schoolie yellowfin to trophy-class yellowtail.

Proven Design and Construction

• Hand-Crafted Quality: Each jig is individually made in the USA with attention to detail that ensures consistent performance
• Optimized Weight Distribution: Perfectly balanced for maximum casting distance and ideal swimming action
• Durable Chrome Finish: Classic chrome plating provides maximum flash and withstands repeated strikes and saltwater exposure
• Premium Treble Hook: Sharp, strong hook ensures solid hookups on aggressive strikes
• Baby 5X Size: Ideal weight and profile for a wide range of pelagic species and conditions

Deadly Surface Iron Action

The Baby 5X excels with the classic yo-yo retrieve that West Coast anglers have relied on for generations. Cast the iron out, let it sink briefly, then retrieve with a rhythmic rod-pumping action that creates an erratic swimming motion. The jig darts and flashes as it moves through the water column, mimicking a fleeing baitfish and triggering reaction strikes from tuna, yellowtail, dorado, and other pelagics. The chrome finish creates maximum flash that attracts fish from a distance, while the proven shape and weight distribution ensure the jig swims perfectly on every retrieve.

Versatile Applications

Whether you're fishing the kelp beds for yellowtail, working tuna boils offshore, targeting dorado around floating debris, casting to surface-feeding bonito and skipjack, or searching for roosterfish in Baja waters, the Baby 5X delivers consistent results. The size is perfect for matching smaller baitfish while still having enough weight for long casts to distant boils and feeding frenzies. The durable construction handles the punishment of hard-fighting pelagics day after day.

West Coast Tradition

Salas surface irons have been a staple in Southern California and Baja tackle boxes for over 50 years, earning their reputation through consistent performance on the water. The Baby 5X continues this tradition, combining time-tested design with quality craftsmanship that serious West Coast anglers trust. From party boats to private vessels, from San Diego to Cabo, the Baby 5X has proven itself on countless trophy fish and remains a go-to choice when pelagics are on the bite.

Experience the proven performance that generations of West Coast anglers have relied on. The Salas Baby 5X Surface Iron isn't just a jig—it's a piece of fishing history that continues to produce results season after season.

Keep Your Big Game Jig in the Water

Hookup Baits are hand-crafted in San Diego and built around a simple idea: shape, color, and action working together to trigger more bites. When the soft body wears out — and it will, because fish are eating it — you don't need to replace the whole jig. These replacement bodies snap onto your existing 1oz or 1.5oz Big Game jig head and you're back in the spread in seconds. Five bodies per pack means you're covered for a full trip.

Designed in San Diego, Built for What's Biting

Hookup Baits designs and manufactures all their products in San Diego, CA. The Big Game body profile is engineered to mimic the baitfish that yellowtail, tuna, and calico bass are actually feeding on — anchovies, sardines, and other local forage. The jig can be cast, jigged vertically, or trolled, giving you maximum versatility across techniques and conditions.

When Your Body Wears Out Before the Fish Do

Soft plastic bodies take a beating — from fish, from rocks, from repeated casts. Buying replacement bodies instead of whole new jigs saves money and keeps your proven jig head in rotation. If you've already dialed in the right color and action for your local bite, these bodies let you stay on that setup without starting over.

Pick Your Color for the Conditions

• Red Crab — high-contrast attractor color, great in low-vis or stained water
• Chovy — anchovy-match profile, a go-to when 'chovies are the primary forage
• Sardine Green — natural sardine imitation, effective in clear water and bright conditions
• Pearl White — versatile, high-flash color that works across species and conditions
• Mint — subtle, translucent color for pressured fish and clear water

Three Ways to Fish It

• Cast and retrieve — work the body like a swimbait along kelp edges and structure
• Vertical jigging — drop to the mark and work it up through the water column
• Trolling — pull it behind the boat to cover water and locate fish

Best Conditions

• Inshore and nearshore saltwater — kelp beds, rocky structure, and open water
• Offshore pelagic fishing when fish are keyed on baitfish
• Any situation where matching the local forage profile gives you an edge

Best For

• Yellowtail and calico bass on cast-and-retrieve presentations
• Bluefin and yellowfin tuna on vertical jigs and trolling
• Anglers who already fish Hookup Baits Big Game jig heads and want to stock up on bodies
• Anyone looking to extend the life of their existing jig investment

How to Replace the Body

Watch the official Hookup Baits tutorial below for a step-by-step walkthrough on swapping out the soft body on your Big Game jig head.

Tackle Express Tips

• Match body color to the forage — Chovy and Sardine Green when anchovies or sardines are the primary bait, Pearl White or Mint when fish are less keyed on a specific color.
• Keep a few extra bodies in your tackle bag on every trip. Bodies wear out fast when fish are biting — having spares means you never have to slow down.
• Red Crab is a sleeper color for calico bass around kelp — don't overlook it when the standard baitfish colors aren't producing.

FAQ

What jig heads do these bodies fit?
These replacement bodies are designed specifically for Hookup Baits 1oz and 1.5oz Big Game jig heads. They are not designed for other jig head brands or sizes.

How many bodies come in a pack?

Can I troll these or are they cast-only?
The Hookup Baits Big Game body is versatile — it can be cast and retrieved, jigged vertically, or trolled. The action holds up across all three presentations.

The most versatile Tady yo-yo iron

The Tady Lure AA Iron is a proven Southern California jig at about 3.6 oz and 4¾ inches with a treble hook. It's a little lighter than the Tady A2, which makes it the most versatile iron in the Tady yo-yo group: drop it to fish holding below the surface, or cast it out and wind it back when they come up. Hand-crafted in the USA.

Why the Tady AA earns a place in the tackle box

• Proven AA shape: A long-time West Coast favorite for yellowtail and calico bass.
• 3.6 oz, 4¾-inch body: Enough weight to reach mid-depth fish, light enough to cast and wind.
• Yo-yo or cast: One iron for fish below the surface and fish that come up.
• Treble hook: The traditional iron hook setup.
• Chrome and painted finishes: Match the bait, light and water clarity.
• Hand-crafted in the USA: Built with the consistency expected from Tady Lures.

How to fish the Tady AA

• Yo-yo: Drop to the depth where fish are marking, engage the reel and wind fast and steady back through the strike zone.
• Cast and wind: When fish come up, cast past them and wind steadily with the rod tip down. Don't pump the rod; the iron creates its own action.
• Around structure: Work it along kelp edges, rocky reef and banks where yellowtail and calico bass hold.

Best for

• Species: Yellowtail, calico bass, bonito, barracuda and white seabass.
• Water: Kelp beds, rocky reef, offshore banks and open-water feeding zones.
• Use case: One mid-weight iron when conditions can change during the day.

Specifications

• Brand: Tady Lures
• Model: AA Iron
• Type: Yo-yo and casting iron jig
• Weight: Approximately 3.6 oz (varies slightly by finish)

Compare other Tady irons

• Tady A2: same 4¾-inch length but heavier at about 4–4.3 oz, so it gets down faster in current.
• Tady 9: a fuller body with a softer flutter on the drop.
• Tady 4/0 Heavy: 5.9 oz for fish holding deep.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Tady AA weigh?

About 3.6 oz depending on the finish, with a 4¾-inch body.

What's the difference between the AA and the A2?

They're the same length, but the A2 is heavier at roughly 4–4.3 oz. The A2 gets down faster and handles more current. The lighter AA is more versatile and can also be cast and wound.

What's the difference between the AA and the Tady 9?

The Tady 9 has a fuller body and a slightly shorter 4½-inch length, so it flutters more softly on the drop. The AA is slimmer and the more versatile of the two.

Can I fish the AA on the surface?

Yes. Cast it and wind it back when fish come up. For fish feeding on top all day, a dedicated surface iron such as the Tady 45 is the standard choice.

Which color should I start with?

Start with Blue White year-round, Scrambled Egg when fish are on sardines or in greener water, and match the finish to the bait and water clarity.
