Yellowtail Rods

One Composite Blank Family, 20 lb to 200 lb

Phenix Axis Conventional Rods are built from a composite blend of S-Glass and T-16 carbon fiber with multi-helix construction — a layup Phenix developed for the strength-to-weight demands of Southern California saltwater. The series runs fourteen models from 7'2" to 8', covering everything from a 20-40 lb flylined bait stick to an 80-200 lb rail rod, so you can build an entire spread out of one blank family.

Why Anglers Reach for the Axis

Glass gives you forgiveness and lifting power. Carbon gives you the light weight and responsiveness to fish all day and feel the bite. Most rods pick one. Every blank in the Axis series blends both, which is why the line diameter stays thin for the line class — you get castability that pure glass can't match and a backbone that pure graphite gives up.

The Problem With Single-Material Blanks

An all-graphite conventional rod feels great until a fish sounds under the boat and you need sustained lifting power — then it either folds or snaps. An all-glass rod will lift anything but casts like a broomstick and wears you out by mid-morning. Multi-helix composite construction wraps both materials so the blank resists twisting under angled pressure, which is the exact load a conventional rod sees when a fish runs down the side of the boat.

What Sets It Apart

• S-Glass and T-16 carbon fiber composite in every model
• Multi-helix construction engineered for saltwater loads
• Thin blank diameter for the line class across the whole range
• Fourteen models, 7'2" to 8', spanning 20-40 lb through 80-200 lb
• Extended-foregrip rail configurations available in the heavier classes
• Includes the 7'6" 50-100 lb Guadalupe Special

The Right Pick If…

• You fish SoCal sport boats, overnight trips, or long range
• You want one blank family covering inshore through offshore instead of a mismatched rack
• You want composite forgiveness without a telephone-pole blank
• You'd rather buy a rod rated honestly to your line class than overbuy

Choosing Your Model

• Medium Heavy, 20-40 lb (HAX-720MH, HAX-780MH): Flylined sardine and mackerel, inshore yellowtail, calico bass, white seabass. This is the bait stick, not a rail rod.
• Heavy, 25-60 lb (HAX-720H, HAX-780H): Larger baits, yo-yo iron, bigger yellowtail and school-grade tuna.
• Extra Heavy, 30-80 lb (HAX-720XH, HAX-780XH): Heavy iron and mid-grade tuna. The top of the range you can comfortably fish off the rod rather than off the rail.
• 2X Heavy, 40-100 lb (HAX-720X2H, HAX-760X2H Guadalupe Special, HAX-780X2H): Where the rail tier starts. Extended foregrip, built for bluefin off the rail.
• 3X Heavy, 60-130 lb (HAX-720X3H, HAX-760X3H, HAX-800X3H): Long-range bluefin. The 8'0" gives you the most blank outside the rail.
• 4X Heavy, 80-200 lb (HAX-C720X4H, HAX-760X4H): Top of the series. Cow-grade bluefin and the heaviest long-range work.

Why the Heavy Models Are So Long

On a rail rod, a large share of the length is foregrip. Once that foregrip is laid on the rail, you may have only four or five feet of blank actually fighting the fish. The more rod you have outside the rail on the water side, the more the fish has to work against — and the fulcrum becomes the boat instead of your arms and back. That's why the 2X Heavy and above run long, and why length on those models isn't about casting distance.

Best Techniques

• Flylined bait: Medium Heavy and Heavy models — enough tip to cast a live sardine, enough backbone to turn a yellowtail out of the kelp
• Yo-yo iron: Heavy and Extra Heavy — handles the load of ripping heavy iron up off the bottom all day
• Rail fishing: 2X Heavy and up — brace the extended foregrip on the rail and let the boat do the lifting
• Heavy live bait and kite: 3X and 4X Heavy — the 130 lb and 200 lb classes

Best Conditions

• Inshore kelp and structure where you have to turn a fish fast — lighter classes
• Offshore and overnight sport boat trips — mid classes
• Long range and Guadalupe Island grounds — 2X Heavy and up
• Any situation where fighting a fish off the rail beats fighting it off your arms

Best For

• Species by class: Calico bass, white seabass and inshore yellowtail on 20-60 lb models; wahoo, dorado and school tuna on 30-80 lb; bluefin and yellowfin tuna on 40-200 lb
• Techniques: Flylined bait, yo-yo iron, rail fishing, heavy live bait, kite fishing
• Environments: Kelp beds, inshore structure, offshore, sport boat, long range, Guadalupe and Mexican waters

Tackle Express Tips

• Buy for the trip you actually book: If you're fishing half-days and overnights inshore, the Medium Heavy and Heavy do the job. The rail classes only earn their money on long range and heavy bluefin.
• Length on the heavy models is about the rail, not casting: The 7'6" and 8'0" heavy blanks aren't for bombing baits — they're for keeping blank on the water side of the rail during a fight.
• Match your line to the rating on the blank: A 40-100 lb rod fished with 130 lb line isn't a 130 lb rod. Fish it honestly and the composite does what it was designed to do.

FAQ

Which Axis models are rail rods?
The 2X Heavy class and above — 40-100 lb, 60-130 lb, and 80-200 lb. Those get the extended foregrip designed to brace against the boat's rail. The Medium Heavy, Heavy, and Extra Heavy models are conventional rods fished off the rod, not off the rail.

What does the S-Glass and T-16 carbon blend actually do?
S-Glass adds forgiveness and lifting power under sustained load. T-16 carbon fiber keeps the blank light and responsive. Multi-helix construction wraps the material so the blank resists twisting under angled pressure. Every model in the series uses the same blend.

How do these ship?
Every rod is wrapped in bubble wrap at the crucial points and suspended inside a thick rod tube so it can't be crushed or knocked around in transit. Note that rods over 8' do not qualify for free shipping.

The United Composites RCE Elite Composite Conventional Rod is the lightest composite conventional rod United Composites has ever built — engineered for serious offshore and inshore saltwater anglers who demand sensitivity, strength, and a featherlight feel without sacrificing backbone.

Why the RCE Elite Belongs in Your Quiver

When you're working a jig at depth, fighting a tuna on the surface, or soaking bait for halibut, rod weight matters. The RCE Elite's composite blank construction delivers a noticeably lighter feel than comparable fiberglass rods while maintaining the power needed to handle fish from 12lb to 60lb+. It's the rod serious anglers reach for when they want to fish all day without arm fatigue.

Built for the Water, Not the Wall

Every RCE Elite ships standard with lightweight EVA grips, a graphite reel seat, and ALPS S-6 Stainless Steel deep-pressed ring guides that are fully braid-proof. Single black wraps with silver trim bands and metallic red and blue accents give it a clean, premium look. Three configurations let you match the rod to your exact fishing style:

• Elite Composite (C) — EVA grips, graphite reel seat, ALPS S-6 SS guides
• Elite Composite+ (C+) — Hypalon grips, ALPS CAH aluminum Centra Lock reel seat, ALPS S-6 SS guides — for anglers who want maximum durability and a premium reel seat
• Elite Composite Deckhand (CT) — High-grade cork tape grip with nylon cord inlay, bulb-style butt cap, mariner's Turk's head knot — the charter and deckhand-ready build

The Problem It Solves

Most composite rods in this class either sacrifice sensitivity for power or add unnecessary weight. The RCE Elite hits the sweet spot — light enough to feel every bite, stiff enough to drive hooks and turn fish. The wide model range (7' to 10', 12lb to 60lb+) means you're not compromising on the right tool for the job.

Edge Over the Competition

Compared to standard fiberglass conventional rods, the RCE Elite blank is significantly lighter, reducing fatigue on long trips. The ALPS S-6 guides are a step above standard stainless guides — deep-pressed ring design keeps braid from cutting into the frame. The C+ upgrade with ALPS aluminum reel seat is a feature typically found on custom rods at twice the price.

The Right Pick If…

• You're fishing tuna, wahoo, or yellowtail on long-range or day trips and want a lighter rod that still has the backbone to fight big fish
• You're a deckhand or charter angler who needs a rod that can take daily abuse — the CT Deckhand build is made for you
• You want a versatile conventional rod that covers jig fishing, surface iron, live bait, and dead bait across a wide line class range
• You're upgrading from a basic fiberglass rod and want the feel of a composite blank without going full graphite

Best Fishing Techniques

• Jig fishing — The moderate and mod-fast actions load well for iron jigs and slow-pitch style presentations
• Surface iron — The 7' models in M-C and H-C are ideal for working surface iron on yellowtail and tuna
• Live bait & dead bait — Moderate action models (MAG-C, MEGA-C) excel at bait fishing with natural presentation
• Wahoo & Del Mar fishing — The Wahoo-C and Del Mar-C models are purpose-built for high-speed trolling and heavy bait applications
• Ulua & surf — The 9' and 10' Deckhand models cover long-range casting and surf applications

Tackle Express Tips

• Match the action to your technique: Moderate action models (MAG-C, Mega-C) are ideal for live bait and slow jigs — they load smoothly and give fish time to eat. Mod-Fast and Fast models (Monster-C, Wahoo-C, Del Mar-C) are better for iron, surface, and high-speed applications where you need instant power transfer.
• Upgrade to C+ if you fish heavy: The ALPS aluminum Centra Lock reel seat on the C+ models locks your reel down with zero play — critical when you're fighting big tuna or wahoo and can't afford any slop in the connection.
• Deckhand models for charter fishing: The CT Deckhand build with cork tape grip and Turk's head knot is designed to handle daily abuse on party boats. If you're a deckhand or fish charters regularly, this is the build that holds up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the C, C+, and CT Deckhand configurations?
All three share the same composite blank and ALPS S-6 SS guides. The C is the standard build with EVA grips and a graphite reel seat. The C+ upgrades to Hypalon grips and an ALPS CAH aluminum Centra Lock reel seat for added durability and a more premium feel. The CT Deckhand replaces the grip with high-grade cork tape and a nylon cord inlay, finished with a bulb butt cap and mariner's Turk's head knot — built for charter and commercial use.

Are these rods available in 9' and 10' lengths?
Yes — 9' and 10' models are available in the Deckhand (CT) configuration. Note that 9' rods may be available in-store but are not always listed on the website. Contact us directly if you're looking for a specific 9' or 10' model.

What species and techniques are these rods best suited for?
The RCE Elite line covers a wide range: tuna (bluefin, yellowfin, albacore), wahoo, yellowtail, white seabass, halibut, and ulua. Techniques include jig fishing, surface iron, live bait, dead bait, and high-speed trolling. The wide model range (12lb to 60lb+) means there's an RCE Elite for nearly every saltwater conventional application.

The Conventional Rod the West Coast Has Been Building Toward.

Conventional saltwater fishing puts a specific set of demands on a rod blank that most production rods can't fully satisfy: enough sensitivity to read bait and feel structure, enough backbone to turn big fish from kelp and deep water, and light enough to fish all day without arm fatigue compromising your technique. The Phenix Black Diamond Conventional Rod addresses all three through aerospace-grade blank construction — Toray high-strength carbon fiber combined with a proprietary resin system and layering process that creates a blank thinner in diameter and lighter in hand than anything else in its line class, while being stronger, not weaker, than the rods it replaces.

Aerospace Blank Construction. Not a Marketing Claim.

The Black Diamond blank starts with Toray carbon fiber — the material used in aerospace and structural applications where the strength-to-weight ratio is a hard engineering requirement, not a performance aspiration. Phenix combines it with a high modulus graphite blend and their proprietary "secret sauce" resin system, layered in a unique process that stiffens the blank inter-laminarly without adding wall thickness. The result: a blank that transmits bite information from depth, loads correctly under conventional fishing loads, and generates the lifting power to pump big fish up from structure without fatiguing you in the process.

Two Hardware Tiers. One Blank Standard.

The Black Diamond Conventional lineup uses two hardware configurations depending on model. The 7' and 7'6" models use Alps reel seats and Hypalon handles — the Alps seat is a premium conventional reel seat known for its secure lock and clean aesthetic, favored by custom rod builders and serious inshore anglers. The 8' models use Fuji reel seats and X-Wrap handles — the Fuji hardware is the industry standard for performance saltwater conventional builds. Guides are Fuji Alconite, Alps S-6, or Seaguide depending on the specific model, all selected for the line class and blank behavior of that configuration. The Deck Hand variant (PSW809XH-J) ships without a reel seat for custom builds.

Why It Beats the Competition

• Toray high-strength carbon with proprietary resin layering — aerospace-grade blank; thinner diameter, lighter, stronger than comparable conventional blanks
• Two hardware tiers — Alps reel seat/Hypalon on 7' models, Fuji seat/X-Wrap on 8' models; both are premium configurations used in custom builds
• Full line class coverage — 10-30lb through 30-80lb across 11 available models; one listing covers inshore finesse through heavy offshore conventional
• Deck Hand variant available — PSW809XH-J ships blank only (no reel seat) for anglers who want to mount their own hardware
• Fast to Moderate Fast actions — responsive through the tip for conventional jigging and live bait; enough backbone throughout to drive hooksets and pump fish

The Right Pick If...

• You fish West Coast conventional — yellowtail, white seabass, tuna, calico — and want a blank built specifically for those applications
• You're running 15-60lb conventional gear and want a rod that's noticeably lighter than what you're currently fishing without giving up strength
• You want Alps or Fuji hardware on a premium blank at a price point below a fully custom build
• You want the Deck Hand blank to build your own custom conventional rod on a proven Black Diamond blank
• You need a longer 8' conventional for open-water offshore applications where casting distance and fight leverage matter more than compactness

Best Fishing Techniques

• Conventional live bait (sardine, mackerel, anchovy): The 7' ML and M models (10-40lb) load correctly for live bait pitches and provide the tip sensitivity to feel subtle takes before the fish commits
• Yo-yo and surface iron: The 7' H and XH models (20-80lb) and the 7'6" XH provide the blank stiffness to work heavy iron and drive hooksets at depth
• Open-water offshore (tuna, yellowtail): The 8' MH through XHJ models (15-60lb) are the primary offshore conventional options — fast action with Fuji hardware for extended fight conditions
• Heavy offshore and jigging: The PSW809XHJ (20-60lb) and PSW760XH (30-80lb) are the dedicated heavy offshore and jigging models where maximum blank strength is the priority
• Custom conventional builds: The PSW809XH-J Deck Hand blank allows rod builders to spec their own reel seat, handle, and guides on the Black Diamond blank

Best Conditions

• Southern California sportboat and long-range — yellowtail, white seabass, calico, tuna
• Open-water offshore — larger tuna and pelagics on 20-60lb conventional gear
• Kelp structure and inshore reef — lighter models (ML, M) for finesse conventional live bait applications
• Heavy jigging and deep-water applications — heavier models (H, XH) for sustained pressure at depth

Best For

• Target Species: Yellowtail, White Seabass, Calico Bass, Halibut, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Amberjack, Rockfish
• Techniques: Live Bait, Yo-Yo Iron, Surface Iron, Conventional Jigging, Offshore Trolling
• Angler Level: Intermediate to Advanced — the blank sensitivity and fast action reward proper conventional technique; a natural step up from mid-grade production conventional rods

Key Features

• Toray high-strength carbon + high modulus graphite with proprietary resin layering
• Thinner diameter, lighter, stronger than comparable class conventional blanks
• Fuji Alconite, Alps S-6, and Seaguide guides depending on model
• Alps reel seat / Hypalon handle (7' models) or Fuji reel seat / X-Wrap handle (8' models)
• Deck Hand variant available — blank only, no reel seat, for custom builds
• 11 available models — 7' to 8', 10-80lb line class coverage

Tackle Express Tips

• Choose your reel seat tier based on your primary application: Alps reel seat models (7' and 7'6") are optimized for inshore and near-shore conventional applications where a lighter, more balanced setup is the priority. The Fuji reel seat models (8') are built for offshore and extended fight scenarios where reel security under sustained load matters more than weight savings. Both tiers use the same Black Diamond blank — the hardware difference is about application fit, not quality level.
• The PSW809H vs PSW809H-XF decision is about hookset style: The 809H (Fast action) gives you a quicker hookset response for reaction bites on conventional gear. The 809H-XF (Moderate Fast) has a softer tip that loads more gradually — better for live bait presentations where you want the fish to fully commit before you feel the load. Both are 20-50lb Heavy models; the action is the only difference.
• Run 40-65lb braid to a heavy fluorocarbon leader on the XH models: The PSW700XH, PSW760XH, and PSW809XHJ are built for heavy applications where braid is the main line. A 15-25ft fluorocarbon top shot in 40-60lb keeps the leader out of your guides on the cast while presenting monofilament to the fish near the terminal tackle. Keep connections clean — a FG or PR knot minimizes guide friction on the cast better than a swivel-to-braid connection.

FAQ

What's the difference between the Alps reel seat models and the Fuji reel seat models?
The Alps reel seat is used on the 7' and 7'6" models — it's a premium conventional reel seat preferred by custom rod builders for its secure lock and low-profile design. The Fuji reel seat is used on the 8' models — Fuji's industry-standard hardware for performance saltwater conventionals. Both are excellent; the distinction reflects the application and rod build philosophy for each length group. The Alps models pair well with lighter to mid-weight conventional reels; the Fuji models are designed for larger conventional reels used in offshore fishing.

What is the Deck Hand variant (PSW809XH-J)?
The Deck Hand variant ships as a finished Black Diamond blank with guides installed but no reel seat fitted — it's for rod builders or anglers who want to mount their own reel seat and handle configuration. If you have a preferred conventional seat or want a custom wrap, this is the model to start with. All other components (guides, blank finish) are identical to the standard PSW809XHJ.

How does the Black Diamond Conventional compare to the Black Diamond Spinning lineup?
Same Toray carbon blank technology and proprietary resin system across both lines. The conventional versions use Alps or Fuji conventional reel seats and are built for conventional fishing applications (live bait, iron, offshore). The spinning versions use Fuji DPS spinning seats and are configured for spinning reels and casting-style fishing. Both deliver the same thin-diameter, lightweight blank performance — choose based on your reel style and technique preference.

Engineered for the West Coast. Proven on Everything That Swims There.

West coast saltwater fishing has a specific style that demands a specific kind of rod. Surface iron, yo-yo iron, live bait at the rail, kelp bed calico, near-shore yellowtail — each technique asks for a blank that loads at different weights, recovers at different speeds, and fights fish with a different leverage profile than a generalist saltwater rod can provide. The Phenix Abyss Conventional Rod is built specifically for that environment. Constructed from a Toray Graphite and S-Glass composite blank, the Abyss achieves the strength-to-weight balance that west coast anglers have been demanding for years — superior lifting power in a blank that's thinner and lighter than traditional conventional rods in its class, without the casting fatigue that heavier builds produce.

Why Toray Graphite and S-Glass Together

S-Glass (structural glass fiber) is fundamentally different from standard fiberglass in one critical way: it's stronger, not just heavier. Combined with Toray graphite's stiffness and sensitivity, the resulting composite blank gets the best of both materials — the graphite component delivers blank responsiveness and tip sensitivity, while the S-Glass provides the parabolic loading behavior and toughness that keeps the blank from catastrophic failure under the sustained load of a hard-running fish. The Abyss doesn't just feel strong; it is strong in a way that matters when you're 20 minutes into a fight with a fish that won't quit.

Three Models. One Blank Platform. Every West Coast Application.

All three Abyss PSX models share the same 8-foot blank length, differentiated by line class to match the primary west coast conventional applications: the PSX-807 (12-30lb) for lighter iron, finesse live bait, and calico applications; the PSX-808 (15-40lb) for mid-weight iron and standard yellowtail live bait; and the PSX-809 (20-50lb) for heavy surface iron, large baits, and situations where maximum lifting power and line class are the priority. All three are built for the conventional reel setup that west coast sportboat and inshore fishing demands.

Why It Beats the Competition

• Toray Graphite / S-Glass composite blank — strength-to-weight optimized; thinner diameter and lighter than conventional rods with comparable line ratings
• West coast action taper — designed specifically for surface iron and live bait; not a repurposed offshore blank
• Superior lifting power — the S-Glass component provides parabolic load behavior under sustained fish pressure; resists fatigue failure that pure graphite blanks are prone to
• Reduced casting fatigue — the lighter blank weight means you can work surface iron at full casting pace over a long day without the arm fatigue that heavier conventional rods produce
• Three line classes from one platform — 12-30lb through 20-50lb, covering the full range of west coast conventional inshore applications

The Right Pick If...

• You fish Southern California surface iron and need a conventional rod with the right action taper for west coast-style iron retrieves
• You fish live bait (sardine, mackerel, anchovy) at the rail and want a blank that loads softly on a pitch but has the backbone to turn a hard-running yellowtail
• You want a lighter conventional rod that reduces casting fatigue over a full sportboat day without sacrificing lifting power
• You target calico, yellowtail, halibut, and near-shore tuna from the same rod and need a model that bridges those applications
• You prefer conventional gear over spinning for iron work and want a blank built specifically for that style

Best Fishing Techniques

• Surface iron: The Abyss action taper is specifically designed for west coast surface iron retrieves — the blank loads on the cast and recovers quickly for a fast, consistent retrieve cadence
• Yo-yo iron: The graphite component provides the sensitivity to feel iron contact on the drop and the stiffness to drive a hookset from depth
• Live bait (sardine, mackerel, anchovy): The PSX-807 and PSX-808 load softly enough to pitch live bait without tearing the bait or alerting fish to rod pressure
• Dropper loop and deep iron: The heavier PSX-809 (20-50lb) provides the backbone for working heavier terminal rigs and lifting fish from depth on conventional gear
• Calico bass in kelp: The lighter models (PSX-807) give you the finesse to work jigs and plastics around structure while retaining enough backbone to pull fish out before they wrap

Best Conditions

• Southern California sportboat and long-range fishing — yellowtail, white seabass, calico, near-shore tuna
• Kelp paddy and inshore structure fishing — surface iron and live bait applications
• Party boat and open-party rail fishing — the lighter blank weight reduces fatigue in crowded rail conditions over a full day
• Shore and jetty conventional fishing — the 8' length provides casting reach and leverage for surf-zone presentations

Best For

• Target Species: Yellowtail, Calico Bass, White Seabass, Halibut, Barracuda, Bonito, Near-Shore Tuna
• Techniques: Surface Iron, Yo-Yo Iron, Live Bait, Dropper Loop, Conventional Jigging
• Angler Level: Intermediate to Advanced — the west coast-specific action taper rewards anglers familiar with iron retrieves and conventional rail fishing; an excellent step-up from entry-level conventional rods

Key Features

• Toray Graphite / S-Glass composite blank — strength-to-weight optimized for west coast applications
• West coast surface iron and live bait action taper
• Lighter and thinner than comparable conventional blanks — reduces casting fatigue on iron
• Superior lifting power from S-Glass parabolic load behavior
• Three models — 8', 12-50lb, covering light finesse through heavy live bait and iron applications

Tackle Express Tips

• Match the line class to your primary bait and iron weight: The PSX-807 (12-30lb) is your go-to for anchovies, small sardines, and light surface iron under 3oz. The PSX-808 (15-40lb) is the most versatile all-around model for mixed sportboat fishing. Step to the PSX-809 (20-50lb) when you're running mackerel, large swimbaits, or heavy yo-yo iron where maximum backbone is the priority.
• Use 20-40lb monofilament or 30-50lb braid for iron work on conventional gear: The Abyss is built for conventional reels — a level-wind or low-profile conventional in the 300-400 size class pairs well with the 8' blank length. Monofilament gives you a casting buffer on iron retrieves; braid with a fluorocarbon top shot works well for live bait at depth where sensitivity matters.
• Work surface iron at a steady, fast retrieve pace: The Abyss action taper is specifically tuned for west coast surface iron cadence — a fast, ripping retrieve that keeps the lure in the strike zone. The blank's recovery speed is matched to that retrieve style. Slow retrieving kills the action on a surface iron; trust the taper and keep the lure moving.

FAQ

What makes the Abyss different from a standard conventional saltwater rod?
The Abyss is built specifically for west coast surface iron and live bait technique — not a general-purpose offshore blank. The action taper is tuned for iron retrieves, the S-Glass/graphite composite provides lifting power without the weight of a pure glass conventional rod, and the blank diameter is thinner than traditional heavy conventional rods at the same line class. If you fish California inshore and near-shore, the Abyss will feel more natural in hand than a generic offshore conventional.

Can I use the Abyss for tuna?
Yes — the PSX-808 and PSX-809 are appropriate for near-shore and inshore tuna (schoolie bluefin, yellowfin under 40lb) on conventional gear. For long-range or open-water tuna on heavier tackle, a dedicated offshore conventional in a heavier line class is the better tool. The Abyss is optimized for the 12-50lb conventional applications most common on SoCal sportboats.

What reel pairs best with the Abyss PSX models?
A conventional level-wind or low-profile conventional in the 300-400 size class (Shimano Tranx, Daiwa Lexa, similar) pairs well with the 8' blank and the 12-40lb line ratings. For the PSX-809 (20-50lb), step to a larger conventional (Shimano Calcutta 400, Avet MXL, similar) that can hold adequate yardage of heavier line for extended fights.

GUSA Graphite Conventional – Hypalon

Saltwater-Ready. Confidence-Built. Axis Series.

There's a specific kind of confidence that comes from picking up a rod and knowing it won't fail you when a yellowtail surges or a white seabass makes a hard run toward the kelp. The Phenix Axis Series Spinning Rod is engineered for exactly that moment. A multi-helix construction using S-glass, T-16 carbon fiber, and graphite composite keeps the blank light and sensitive while giving it the structural backbone to handle saltwater's biggest demands — heavy braid loads, long fights, and repeated punishment in a marine environment.

Why Standard Graphite Falls Short in Saltwater

Pure high-modulus graphite is brittle under impact and lateral stress — exactly the kind of load a big yellowtail or bull calico puts on a rod when it bulldogs toward structure. The Axis solves this with S-glass woven into the composite matrix. S-glass adds flex memory and impact resistance without meaningfully increasing weight or reducing sensitivity. The result is a blank that reads light bites clearly, loads smoothly on long casts, and recovers from the kind of bend that would crack a brittle single-material rod. The multi-helix layup adds hoop strength so the blank doesn't compress or oval under extreme load.

Built for Southern California — and Anywhere Else It's Tough

The HAX lineup was designed around the conditions Southern California saltwater anglers face: kelp paddy fishing for yellowtail, live bait presentations for white seabass, deep drop calico bass, and open-water tuna. Five models cover 7'2" to 8'2", from Medium Heavy (20-40lb) to Medium Light (12-30lb), with moderate-fast action across the board — the action taper that loads smoothly on a live bait pitch and still delivers a fast, decisive hookset. Fuji DPSSD reel seat with EVA handles gives you a secure, lightweight connection that won't rattle or corrode.

Why It Beats the Competition

• S-glass / T-16 carbon / graphite composite — multi-material blank; more impact-resistant and durable than single-material graphite rods in this class
• Multi-helix construction — adds hoop and torsional strength; the blank doesn't twist or compress under heavy load
• Moderate-fast action — the right taper for live bait and iron; loads on the cast, recovers fast on the set
• Fuji DPSSD reel seat — corrosion-resistant, secure, and compatible with the full range of spinning reels used in saltwater
• Thin diameter, lightweight build — fishes all day without fatigue; Phenix's benchmark for the series

The Right Pick If...

• You fish Southern California kelp and offshore structure for yellowtail, white seabass, or calico bass
• You need a spinning rod that handles both live bait presentations and iron jigs without compromising either
• You want a rod built tough enough for repeated saltwater use, not one that needs babying between trips
• You're stepping up from a mid-grade saltwater spinning rod and want to understand what composite construction actually feels like under load
• You run 40-60lb braid and need a guide and reel seat system that handles it reliably

Best Fishing Techniques

• Live bait — anchovy, sardine, mackerel: The moderate-fast action loads naturally on a soft pitch; the fish feels minimal resistance on the take
• Iron jigs (surface iron and yo-yo iron): The 720H and 780H handle heavier iron loads; the stiffness through the mid-section drives long casts and controlled retrieves
• Dropper loop and deep drop rigs: 820MH (20-45lb) is the natural choice for deep calico and rockfish on dropper rigs
• Topwater lures: 820ML (12-30lb) works well for smaller surface presentations; lighter line classes and lure weights

Best Conditions

• Kelp paddy fishing — the backbone handles fish that want to run back into the paddy
• Open-water offshore — surface iron, live bait, and light to medium jig applications
• Rocky reef and structure fishing — the S-glass composite handles the lateral stress of turning fish away from cover
• All-day trips and multi-day sportfishing — the lightweight build reduces fatigue; the durability handles repeated use

Best For

• Target Species: Yellowtail, White Seabass, Calico Bass, Halibut, Tuna, Rockfish
• Techniques: Live Bait, Iron Jigging, Dropper Loop, Topwater, Yo-Yo Iron
• Angler Level: Intermediate to Advanced — the moderate-fast action rewards proper casting and hookset timing; a natural step up for anglers moving from freshwater or entry-level saltwater gear

Key Features

• S-glass, T-16 carbon fiber, and graphite composite blank — impact-resistant and sensitive
• Multi-helix construction — hoop and torsional strength under heavy load
• Moderate-fast action — optimal for live bait and iron applications
• Fuji DPSSD reel seat with EVA handles — corrosion-resistant, secure fit
• Thin diameter, lightweight build — all-day fishability without fatigue
• Five-model lineup — 7'2" to 8'2", Medium Light through Heavy

Tackle Express Tips

• Match the model to your primary bait size: Anchovy and small sardine fishing? The 720MH (20-40lb) is the most versatile. Larger mackerel or big sardine presentations for white seabass? Step up to the 720H or 780H — the heavier line rating gives you more control on a surging fish near structure.
• Run 40-65lb braid to a 20-40lb fluorocarbon leader for live bait: The Fuji DPSSD guides handle the braid-to-leader connection cleanly. Keep the leader long enough (12–15ft) to stay out of your guides on the cast so you're presenting mono/fluoro to the fish, not braid.
• Don't fight the moderate-fast action — use it: When a yellowtail hits and runs, let the blank load and absorb the initial surge rather than locking down immediately. The S-glass composite gives the rod enough flex memory to recover; the backbone through the lower section will turn the fish when you apply pressure at the right angle.

FAQ

What's the difference between the 720H and 780H — when should I choose the longer rod?
The 780H (7'8") gives you extra casting distance and more leverage on long-range presentations — useful for surface iron at distance or when fishing from a high rail position on a sportboat. The 720H (7'2") is more manageable in tight quarters like a crowded rail or kayak deck. Both handle the same 25-60lb line class.

Is this rod suitable for tuna?
Yes for lighter tuna applications — schoolie bluefin, yellowfin in the 20-40lb range. The 720H and 780H (25-60lb) are the appropriate models. For larger tuna or heavy-duty chunking situations, you'd want to step up to a heavier-rated rod built specifically for that application.

How does S-glass compare to pure graphite in saltwater use?
S-glass adds impact resistance and flex memory that pure graphite lacks. In saltwater — where you're frequently bouncing rods off rails, fighting big fish at odd angles, and dealing with corrosive conditions — the composite outperforms single-material graphite for durability. You give up a small amount of raw sensitivity, but the Axis's T-16 carbon component keeps sensitivity at a level that's fully adequate for all live bait and iron applications.

The Phenix Black Diamond Hybrid is built on a blank that doesn't exist anywhere else in saltwater fishing. It's the first fully woven carbon fiber and Kevlar hybrid blank — a material combination borrowed from aerospace and automotive engineering and applied to a fishing rod after years of R&D. The result is a rod that is lighter, stronger, and more sensitive than traditional glass or graphite, with an action profile that handles everything from 15 lb live bait work to 200 lb stand-up applications depending on the model.

Why Graphite and Glass Both Fall Short

Graphite is light and sensitive but brittle under high lateral loads. Fiberglass is tough but heavy and slow. The Phenix Hybrid blank doesn't make that tradeoff — the woven carbon fiber/Kevlar construction distributes stress across the blank's entire surface rather than concentrating it at failure points. That means you get graphite-level sensitivity and weight with far better impact resistance, and an action that loads and recovers faster than any equivalent glass blank.

What's Built Into Every Black Diamond Hybrid

• Fully woven carbon fiber and Kevlar blank — aerospace/automotive composite technology applied to saltwater rod design
• Fast action across all models — loads quickly and transfers energy efficiently on the hookset
• Fuji Silicon Carbide (SIC) or HBSG guides — depending on model; low-friction, heat-resistant, long-lasting
• Alps Centra Lock or Fuji reel seats — solid lockdown for conventional reels under heavy drag
• Hypalon or high-density Hypalon handles — comfortable, non-slip grip in wet conditions
• Deckhand variants available — custom seine cord or woven wrap handle for charter and commercial applications
• Extreme care packaging — bubble-wrapped at critical areas and suspended in a thick rod tube

The Right Pick If...

• You want a blank that outlasts graphite in high-impact, high-drag applications without the weight penalty of glass
• You're fishing conventional gear for yellowtail, tuna, or big game and need a rod that won't telegraph its limits mid-fight
• You need a single-blank platform that covers 15 lb light live bait through 200 lb stand-up — the Black Diamond lineup has a model for each application
• You're a deckhand or charter angler who needs a rod that takes abuse over hundreds of trips without cracking or delaminating

Best Fishing Techniques

• Live bait (sardines, mackerel, squid, flylined)
• Iron casting / metal jigs
• Stand-up conventional fishing
• Trolling (with Aftco guide variants)
• Marlin casting (PMC Marlin Caster models)

Best Conditions

Tackle Express Tips

• For Southern California live bait fishing targeting yellowtail and bluefin on 30–60 lb fluorocarbon, the PHD-700H (20-60 lb) and PHD-760H (20-60 lb, 7'6") are the most versatile models in the lineup — long enough to cast, stout enough to pressure fish.
• The Deckhand variants (seine cord or woven wrap handles) are worth considering even for private boat use. They're built to take daily abuse and the handle texture gives you more control on the rod when fighting fish one-handed.
• Match your reel to the rod power class: the MH models (15-40 lb) pair well with 400–500 size reels, the XH and X2H range (30-100 lb) with 600–800 size lever drags, and the X3H/X4H with 2-speed lever drags in the 30–130 lb class.

FAQ

What makes the Hybrid blank different from standard graphite?
The Black Diamond Hybrid uses a woven carbon fiber and Kevlar construction — not a standard unidirectional or scrim-wrapped graphite blank. This gives it significantly better impact and lateral load resistance than comparable graphite rods without the weight penalty of fiberglass. It's a material technology borrowed from aerospace, not a marketing term.

How do I choose between the 7' and 7'6" models in the same power class?
The 7'6" gives you more casting leverage and a softer tip section at the same power rating — better for flylined baits where you want the fish to feel less resistance on the pick-up. The 7' is stiffer tip-to-tip for the same rating, which translates to a faster, more authoritative hookset on iron or heavier jigs.

Are the rods shipped safely for longer distances?
Yes — every Black Diamond Hybrid ships wrapped tightly with bubble wrap at the critical stress points and suspended in a heavy-wall rod tube. We've specifically invested in packaging that keeps rods intact in transit, because we're anglers and we know what a broken rod on arrival feels like.

Built to Go Where the Fish Are Hardest to Stop.

Saltwater fishing puts a different kind of demand on a rod than freshwater does. The fish are bigger, the line classes heavier, the environments more corrosive, and the margin for blank failure much narrower. The Phenix Black Diamond Spinning Rod is built for exactly that environment. Using Toray's high-strength carbon fibers with a proprietary layering process and Phenix's own resin system, the Black Diamond achieves a blank that's thinner in diameter and lighter in hand than any comparable saltwater rod in its class — while being stronger, not weaker, than what it replaced.

Aerospace Technology, Applied to Saltwater Blanks

The Black Diamond's construction starts with Toray carbon fiber — the same raw material used in aerospace and defense applications where strength-to-weight ratio is non-negotiable. Phenix combines it with a unique layering process and a proprietary resin blend that bonds the fibers differently than standard production rods. The result is a super-strong blank with a thinner wall section and less total weight than previous-generation saltwater graphite blanks. What this means in practice: you fish 15-50lb line without the rod feeling overbuilt in your hands, and the blank telegraphs lure action and fish behavior at a sensitivity level that heavier saltwater rods can't match.

Built for Southern California Saltwater and Beyond

The four-model PSW lineup covers the two primary inshore/offshore spinning applications: a 7'–7'6" Medium range (15-40lb) optimized for live bait, light iron, and versatile inshore use, and an 8' Medium Heavy through Heavy range (15-50lb) for longer presentations, surface iron, open-water tuna applications, and situations where casting distance and fish-fighting leverage matter. Fuji Alconite guides handle braid loads without heat buildup or wear, and the Fuji DPS reel seat provides a corrosion-resistant, secure connection for the full-size spinning reels the 15-50lb line class demands.

Why It Beats the Competition

• Toray high-strength carbon fiber — aerospace-grade raw material; higher tensile strength per gram than standard graphite composites
• Proprietary layering process and resin system — Phenix's "secret sauce"; thinner diameter and lighter weight than comparable saltwater blanks without sacrificing strength
• Fuji Alconite guides — lighter than SiC with excellent heat dissipation; fully compatible with heavy braid in saltwater environments
• Fuji DPS reel seat — corrosion-resistant, secure under heavy reel loads; the standard for quality saltwater spinning builds
• Inshore and offshore capable — 4 models covering 7' to 8', Medium through Heavy; one lineup that bridges live bait and open-water applications

The Right Pick If...

• You fish Southern California inshore and offshore — yellowtail, white seabass, calico, tuna — and want a spinning rod that handles all of it
• You run 30-50lb braid to a fluorocarbon leader and need guides and a reel seat that hold up to that load over time
• You want a saltwater spinning rod that's noticeably lighter in hand than what you're used to without giving up strength or backbone
• You fish surface iron, live bait, and poppers from a sportboat or kayak and need one rod that covers those scenarios
• You're ready to upgrade from a mid-grade saltwater blank and want to feel the difference Toray carbon makes under load

Best Fishing Techniques

• Live bait (anchovy, sardine, mackerel): The 700M and 760M (15-40lb, Moderate Fast / Fast) load softly on a live bait pitch and absorb the initial surge of a yellowtail or white seabass without ripping the bait
• Surface iron and yo-yo iron: The 808MH (Medium Heavy, Fast) delivers the backbone to work surface iron at distance and drive hooksets on long-range retrieves
• Poppers and topwater lures: The 8' models give you the rod length and tip recovery speed to work poppers with authority; the Alconite guides handle repeated braid-to-lure stress
• Open-water tuna (schoolie to mid-range): The 809H (Heavy, Fast, 20-50lb) is the dedicated tuna model — the backbone turns fish that run hard and the tip recovers fast enough for a quick reset
• Calico bass and halibut: The 700M is the most versatile near-shore model; works equally well on dropper rigs, live bait, and iron for calico and halibut

Best Conditions

• Southern California kelp and offshore structure — yellowtail, white seabass, calico bass
• Open-water offshore — tuna on surface iron, poppers, and live bait
• Sportboat and long-range fishing — the lightweight blank reduces fatigue over multi-day trips
• Shore and jetty fishing — the 8' models give you the reach and power for longer shore presentations

Best For

• Target Species: Yellowtail, White Seabass, Calico Bass, Halibut, Bluefin Tuna, Yellowfin Tuna, Rockfish
• Techniques: Live Bait, Surface Iron, Yo-Yo Iron, Poppers, Topwater, Dropper Loop
• Angler Level: Intermediate to Advanced — the blank sensitivity and fast action reward proper technique; an excellent choice for serious SoCal saltwater anglers stepping up to a premium spinning rod

Key Features

• Toray high-strength carbon fiber with proprietary layering and resin system
• Thinner diameter and lighter weight than comparable class saltwater blanks
• Fuji Alconite guides — lightweight, heat-resistant, braid-compatible
• Fuji DPS reel seat — corrosion-resistant, secure under heavy spinning reel loads
• Four models — 7' to 8', Medium through Heavy, inshore and offshore applications

Models & Specs

Tackle Express Tips

• Match the model to your primary species and presentation: The 700M (Moderate Fast) is the most versatile live bait and inshore model — the softer tip loads on a sardine pitch and absorbs the take. The 760M (Fast) adds a little more backbone for iron and larger baits. The 808MH and 809H are dedicated to power applications — surface iron, poppers, and open-water tuna where you need casting distance and fish-fighting leverage.
• Run 40-65lb braid to a 25-40lb fluorocarbon leader: The Black Diamond's Fuji Alconite guides handle the braid-to-leader connection cleanly. Keep the leader long enough (12–15ft) to stay out of your guides on the cast — the fish see fluorocarbon, not braid, and the leader absorbs chafe from structure and teeth.
• Rinse thoroughly after every saltwater use: The Fuji DPS seat and Alconite guides are corrosion-resistant, not corrosion-proof. A freshwater rinse after every trip — especially around the reel seat hood and guide feet — extends the hardware life significantly on a rod in this price range.

FAQ

What's the difference between the 700M Moderate Fast and the 760M Fast action?
The 700M's Moderate Fast action has a more forgiving tip that loads better on soft live bait presentations — it's the better choice when you're pitching anchovies or sardines and want the fish to take the bait without feeling the rod load. The 760M's Fast action stiffens the tip for better iron control and a quicker hookset on reaction strikes. If you fish primarily live bait, start with the 700M. If you split time between live bait and iron, the 760M is more versatile.

Is the Black Diamond suitable for shore fishing?
Yes — the 8' models (808MH, 809H) are particularly well-suited for shore and jetty fishing where casting distance and line management from elevation matter. The extra length gives you clearance over rocks and structure, and the heavier line ratings handle the larger terminal tackle typically used from shore.

How does the Black Diamond compare to other Phenix saltwater spinning rods like the Axis?
The Black Diamond uses a more advanced blank construction — Toray high-strength carbon with Phenix's proprietary layering and resin system — compared to the Axis's S-glass/T-16 carbon composite. The Black Diamond is thinner in diameter, lighter in hand, and built for higher-end saltwater applications where blank performance justifies the price premium. The Axis is a strong mid-tier saltwater option; the Black Diamond is the step up for serious offshore use.

Built for the Drop. Engineered for the Fight.

Long fall jigging is a precision game. Your jig needs to flutter naturally on the descent, trigger the strike, and then the rod needs the backbone to turn a hard-charging yellowtail or amberjack away from structure before it wins. The Phenix Titan Long Fall Jigging Spinning Rod is built for exactly that moment — loaded with high-modulus carbon, Fuji hardware, and a fast-taper action that handles both sides of the equation.

Why Standard Spinning Rods Fall Short Here

Most spinning rods aren't optimized for the long fall technique. A tip that's too stiff kills jig action on the drop. A blank with too much recovery lag misses the window to set the hook. The Titan LFJ solves both problems: the tip loads and releases cleanly for maximum flutter, while the powerful mid-section snaps back fast when it's time to drive the hook home. It's not a compromise — it's a rod designed around the technique.

What It Does Best

Deploy 150g–250g jigs in 150–400ft of water. Let the jig freefall, watch the line, and fire the hookset the instant you feel the thump. The Titan LFJ telegraphs every bump with the sensitivity you need to differentiate a hit from bottom contact. The Fuji K-frame SiC guides handle heavy braid without channeling or heat buildup, so you're not babying the rod on long drops.

Why It Wins Over the Competition

• USA-built quality control — not outsourced; Phenix builds and inspects in-house
• High-modulus carbon blank — lighter, more sensitive, and stronger than standard graphite
• Fuji K-frame / SiC guide system — industry-leading for braid performance and tangle resistance
• Fast-taper recovery — critical for long fall technique; most rods in this class are too slow
• Fuji reel seat with carbon fiber hood — secure, lightweight, zero-rattle connection

The Right Pick If...

• You're targeting yellowtail, amberjack, or tuna with vertical jigs in deep water
• You run braid to a fluorocarbon leader and need a guide system that handles the connection cleanly
• You want a technique-specific rod that isn't trying to be a general-purpose jigging stick
• You're stepping up from a mid-grade rod and want to feel the difference high-modulus carbon makes

Best Fishing Techniques

• Long Fall Jigging — the primary technique this rod is built around; 150g–250g jigs, deep drifts
• Slow Pitch Jigging — works well with lighter jig loads; the fast tip recovers clean on the pitch
• Vertical Jigging — general-purpose deep jigging where sensitivity on the drop matters

Best Conditions

• Offshore structure fishing — kelp paddy edges, seamounts, dropoffs, rocky bottom at depth
• 150–400ft water column; heavier jigs in current or deeper water
• Works from a drifting boat or anchored; not designed for casting applications

Best For

• Target Species: Yellowtail, Amberjack, Tuna, Large Rockfish, Lingcod
• Techniques: Long Fall Jigging, Slow Pitch, Vertical Jigging
• Angler Level: Intermediate to Advanced — technique-specific rod rewards proper jigging form

Key Features

• High-modulus carbon blank — sensitivity and strength in a lightweight package
• Fast-taper action optimized for long fall and slow pitch techniques
• Fuji K-frame guides with SiC rings — smooth, tangle-resistant, built for braid
• Fuji reel seat with carbon fiber hood — secure and lightweight
• Split-grip EVA handle — reduced weight, improved balance at the butt
• Built and quality-checked in the USA

Models & Specs

Tackle Express Tips

• Match your jig weight to depth and current: 150g works in calmer, shallower conditions; bump to 200–250g when the current is running or you're dropping past 250ft to maintain contact and feel the bottom.
• Use 40–65lb braid to a 60–80lb fluorocarbon leader: The Fuji SiC guides handle the braid-to-leader connection cleanly, and the heavier fluoro gives you abrasion resistance near structure where yellowtail and amberjack like to run.
• Let the rod do the work on the fall: Hold the rod at a 45° angle, keep light tension, and watch for the telltale twitch. Most long fall strikes happen on the descent — not the jig action — so sensitivity on the drop is everything.

FAQ

What jig weight range does the Phenix Titan LFJ handle?
The Titan LFJ is rated for jig weights suited to deep-water vertical jigging applications, typically 150g–250g. Check the blank for the rated range on your specific model.

Can this rod be used for slow pitch jigging?
Yes. The fast-taper blank and clean tip recovery make it well-suited for slow pitch as well as long fall technique. It performs best with technique-specific jigs in the 100g–200g range for slow pitch applications.

What spinning reel pairs well with this rod?
A high-speed spinning reel in the 5000–8000 size range (Shimano Stella SW, Daiwa Saltiga, or similar) loaded with 40–65lb braid is the standard pairing for this application. Gear ratio 5.5:1 or faster helps you recover line quickly after a drop.

Every slow pitch angler needs a rod that can take a beating on structure without costing as much as the reel sitting on it. The Origin is built to be that workhorse: a solid overhead blank sized across three jig-weight ranges so you can match the rod to the fish and the drop without overspending on a specialty setup.

A Dependable Blank for Everyday Bottom Fishing

The Origin trades some of the ultra-refined taper of a finesse rod for a tougher, more forgiving blank that holds up to constant contact with reef, wrecks, and rock. It still loads through the cast and pitch enough to work a jig properly, but it's built first for durability, making it the rod you grab for repeated drops on structure where gear takes a pounding.

Solving the One-Rod-Does-Everything Problem

A lot of anglers try to fish one jigging rod across every jig weight and end up either underpowered on heavier jigs or too stiff for light ones. The Origin comes in three distinct PE and gram ranges, so you can build out a proper quiver without paying finesse-rod prices for each one, or just pick the single model that matches most of your fishing.

The Right Pick If...

Choose the Origin when you want a reliable overhead jigging rod for reef and bottom structure without stepping up to a premium finesse blank. It's a strong choice for anglers building their first slow pitch setup, running charter or rental gear, or wanting a backup rod that can take rough handling on the boat.

Best Techniques and Conditions

The Origin handles standard slow pitch and slow jigging cadence well: lift, pause, and controlled fall over structure. It's most effective in the 60 to 350g jig range depending on model, fishing reef, wrecks, and rocky bottom from moderate to deeper water where current demands more backbone than a pure finesse rod offers.

Best For

• Reef and wreck fishing for snapper, grouper, and other bottom structure species
• Anglers building a first slow pitch or slow jigging setup
• Boats needing a durable rod for repeated, high-use drops
• Matching jig weight to conditions across a 60-350g range

Key Features

• Durable overhead blank built for repeated structure contact
• Three models covering light, medium-light, and medium jig weights
• Solid backbone for lifting fish clear of structure
• Comfortable 6'3"-6'4" lengths for all-day jigging
• Value-priced alternative to premium finesse jigging rods

Tackle Express Tips

• Pick the model that covers the middle of your typical jig weight, not the extreme ends of its range, for the best action and lifting power balance.
• Step up to the Ocean's Legacy Solist Finesse Slow Pitch Jigging Rod if you want a more refined finesse action for pressured fish, or keep the Origin as your durable everyday rod.

FAQ

Which model is the best all-around choice?
The ORSJ-B641ML (100-250g) covers the widest range of common reef jig weights and is the best starting point if you're only buying one.

Is the Origin as sensitive as the Solist Finesse?
No, the Origin favors durability and value over the Solist's refined finesse action. It still fishes jigs effectively but is built to take more abuse.

Can this rod handle bigger amberjack and kingfish?
The ORSJ-B631M (150-350g) has the backbone for stronger bottom structure species, though for the biggest fish a heavier dedicated rod may be a better match.

Slow pitch jigging lives or dies on how the rod loads and releases through the fall, not the retrieve. The Solist Finesse is built around that idea: a parabolic blank that bends deep and springs back fast, so every pitch gives your jig the flutter and dart action that triggers strikes from fish that would ignore a stiffer rod.

Why a Finesse Blank Changes Your Hookup Rate

Slow pitch jigging is really about the rod doing the work while you barely move the reel handle. The Solist's soft, progressive tip loads under the jig's own weight on the drop, then unloads on the pitch to send the jig darting and fluttering without you having to time a hard jerk. That natural, erratic action is what separates a strike from a follow, especially on finicky bottomfish working structure in clear water.

The Problem With Stiff Jigging Rods

A rod that's too stiff for the jig weight kills the fall action and forces you to work the rod harder to get any movement out of the jig, which tires you out on a long session and telegraphs less natural motion to the fish. The Solist Finesse is built specifically for lighter jig weights, so the blank flexes exactly where it should without extra effort on your part.

The Right Pick If...

Choose the Solist Finesse when you're running lighter to mid-weight slow pitch jigs and want a rod that does the animation for you rather than fighting your technique. It's built as an overhead (conventional) blank across three PE-rated models, so you can match the rod to the jig weight and target species without overpowering the action.

Best Techniques and Conditions

This rod shines with classic slow pitch cadence: short pitches, a controlled fall, and a pause to let the jig flutter before the next pitch. It's most effective over reef, wrecks, and rocky bottom in depths where finesse presentations out-fish aggressive jigging, particularly when bottomfish are pressured or holding tight to structure in clear water. Pair the blank weight to conditions: the lighter PE2 model for finicky bites in calmer water, and the PE3 or PE4 models when you need more backbone against current or bigger fish.

Best For

• Slow pitch jigging for snapper, grouper, amberjack, and other bottom structure species
• Finesse presentations in clear or pressured water
• Anglers who want the rod's action to do the jig's work
• Overhead/conventional reel setups matched to lighter jig weights

Key Features

• Parabolic finesse blank that loads on the fall for natural jig action
• Overhead (conventional) build designed for slow pitch technique
• Three PE-rated models to match jig weight from 180g to 400g max
• Sensitive tip for detecting light bites and structure contact
• 6'3" length for controlled pitches and comfortable all-day fishing

Tackle Express Tips

• Match the model to your heaviest planned jig weight, not your lightest. A rod rated slightly above your jig still loads well, but going over the max kills the finesse action.
• Pair the PE2 or PE3 model with an Ahi Ikara Slow Pitch Jig and Ocean's Legacy Tako Bait Stinger Twin Assist Hooks for a complete finesse setup built to hook short strikes.
• Run a conventional slow pitch reel with a smooth clutch and fast retrieve to keep up with the rod's quick unload on the pitch.

FAQ

Which model should I start with?
The SOL-B631ML (PE3, 320g max) is the most versatile middle ground for most slow pitch anglers, with the PE2 for lighter finesse work and the PE4 for heavier jigs or stronger current.

Is this rod spinning or conventional?
It's built as an overhead (conventional) blank, designed to pair with a conventional slow pitch reel.

Can I use this rod for speed jigging too?
It's optimized for slow pitch finesse action. For faster speed jigging retrieves, a stiffer blank will handle that cadence better.

Guides that twist out of alignment under load rob you of feel and put uneven stress on the blank right when a fish is testing it. The Elementus fixes that with spiral guide construction, wrapping the guide train around the blank so it stays true to the rod's natural bend instead of fighting it.

Why the Spiral Wrap Matters

On a standard jigging rod, the guides sit in a straight line that can twist slightly off-axis as the blank loads deep under a fish or a heavy jig. The Elementus runs its guide train in a spiral path down the rod, keeping the line running through the guides aligned with the blank's curve at any bend angle. That means smoother line flow on the cast, more consistent feel through the fight, and less strain concentrated on any single guide.

The Twisted-Guide Problem, Solved

Standard guide setups can flex and torque under heavy jig loads or a hard-fighting fish, costing you sensitivity right when you need to feel a bite or structure contact. Spiral construction spreads that load more evenly around the blank, so the rod transmits feedback more accurately and holds up better session after session on demanding drops.

The Right Pick If...

Reach for the Elementus if you want the smoother casting and improved blank-to-guide alignment that spiral construction offers, especially when fishing heavier jigs or bigger fish where guide torque becomes noticeable. It's available in three PE ratings, so you can dial in the right blank for everything from mid-weight reef jigs to bigger bottom-dwelling species.

Best Techniques and Conditions

The Elementus is built for standard slow pitch cadence, lifting and pausing to let the jig flutter through the water column. It performs best over reef, wrecks, and rocky structure where you're working PE2 to PE4 jig weights, and the spiral construction earns its keep most in deeper water or stronger current where guide torque under load is more pronounced.

Best For

• Slow pitch jigging for snapper, grouper, amberjack, and other structure species
• Anglers fishing heavier jigs or deeper water where guide alignment matters more
• Smoother, more accurate casts on repeated drops
• Matching blank power to jig weight across PE2, PE3, and PE4 ratings

Key Features

• Spiral guide construction for consistent alignment under load
• Smoother line flow and improved casting accuracy
• Even load distribution across guides for better sensitivity
• Three PE-rated models to match a range of jig weights
• 6'3" length built for controlled slow pitch pitches

Tackle Express Tips

• Choose the PE rating that matches your heaviest regular jig weight, since the spiral construction performs best when the blank is properly loaded for the jig.
• If you fish a mix of finesse and heavier jigs, the Ocean's Legacy Solist Finesse Slow Pitch Jigging Rod pairs well as a lighter complement to the Elementus.
• Rig up with an Ahi Ikara Slow Pitch Jig and Ocean's Legacy Tako Bait Stinger Twin Assist Hooks for a complete structure-fishing setup.

FAQ

What does spiral guide construction actually do?
It wraps the guide train around the blank in a spiral path instead of a straight line, keeping the guides aligned with the rod's bend under load for smoother casts and better feel.

Which PE rating should I pick?
The PE3 (ESSJ-B631M) covers the widest range of common reef jig weights and is the best all-around choice if you're only buying one model.

Does this rod work for speed jigging too?
It's built around slow pitch cadence, but the spiral construction and solid backbone let it handle occasional speed jigging retrieves without issue.
