How to install and adjust

For a simple Carolina-style setup, slide your sinker onto the line first. Grip the keeper so squeezing opens its central slit. Thread the free end of the line through the opening and release the pliers. Tie on your hook, then squeeze the keeper again to set the distance between sinker and hook.

Always squeeze the keeper open before moving it. Check that it holds under the load of your chosen sinker before casting. If it slips, a second keeper may be needed, especially with sinkers of 1/2 ounce or heavier. The keeper is a stop; it does not provide the rotating action of a swivel.

3 Tackle Express Tips

1. Test the hold. Pull against the sinker gently and check that the keeper stays where you set it. Repeat after the first few casts.
2. Adjust one thing at a time. Keep your bait and sinker the same while changing the spacing, so you can judge the effect of that adjustment.
3. Inspect the line. Check for scuffs where the keeper and sinker sit. Re-rig damaged line before continuing, and avoid pulling a closed keeper along the line.

Do I need pliers to install one?

Yes. Use needle-nose pliers to squeeze the keeper and open the slit for threading or adjustment.

Does it replace a swivel?

It can replace the swivel's role as a sinker stop in a simple rig. It does not rotate to manage line twist or join two different lines.

What should I do if the keeper slips?

Check the installation and test the setup again. A second keeper may be needed with heavier sinkers. Do not assume the stop will hold every combination of line and weight.

Which Test Rating

The rule is simple: the clip should be rated above your leader, not equal to it. Terminal hardware should never be the weakest link in the system — when something gives, you want it to be the line, not the connection, so you lose a lure instead of a lure and a fish.

All four are the same price, so there's no reason to under-buy. If you're between two, take the heavier one — the size difference is small and the failure consequence isn't.

On an Umbrella Rig

The Kicker PK-Rig ships with clips already on the arms. These are your replacements — and on a rig you're going to fish for a season, you want spares in the box before you need them.

Go 75 or 125 lb for rig work. A five-arm rig carries five weighted baits through structure, and each clip is holding a bait against the load of the whole retrieve. This is the one application where the heaviest clip is the obvious choice.

• Keep two ratings in the box. A 50 and a 125 covers almost everything most SoCal anglers fish in a season.
• Rinse them with the rest of your terminal. Electroplated black steel handles salt well, but nothing survives being left wet in a closed box.

Common Mistakes

• Matching the clip rating to the leader instead of exceeding it. The clip should be the strong part of the system.
• Using a light clip on an umbrella rig. Five weighted baits is a load no 25 lb clip should be holding.
• Assuming it's closed. The single most common way anglers lose a lure on a clip.
• Leaving a bent or sprung clip in rotation. Once it doesn't seat cleanly, it's done.

Choose a weight and shape

Start lighter in shallow, calm water when you can maintain control. Move up in weight if wind, current, depth, or a long cast makes it difficult to track the rig. Use the lightest option that reliably does the job, while staying within your rod's rating.

Rigging guidance

Tie your drop-shot hook with a tag end long enough for the spacing you want below the bait. Pass the tag through the weight's clip opening and draw it into the narrow gripping section. Check the hold before casting. Adjust the weight's position to change hook-to-weight spacing, and inspect the line whenever you move or replace it.

3 Tackle Express Tips

1. Distinguish bottom contact from excess weight. If you cannot follow the rig, try the next weight up. If it digs in or hangs repeatedly, change your angle or presentation as well as the sinker.
2. Check the clip area. Inspect the tag end for abrasion after snags and adjustments. Trim damaged line or re-rig rather than assuming the clip cannot harm it.
3. Keep bait movement controlled. Once the sinker settles, use small rod movements and pauses. Watch how much movement reaches the bait instead of constantly dragging the weight.

How many weights come in a pack?

The 1/8-ounce pack has 7; 3/16- and 1/4-ounce packs have 6; the 3/8-ounce pack has 5.

Do I tie a knot to the weight?

The clip is designed to grip the tag end without a separate weight knot. Check that it holds your line before casting.

Will the finesse shape prevent every snag?

No. It offers a slim profile to try around rock, but the bottom, retrieve angle, and line placement still affect hang-ups.

Lead Masters halibut trap rig is idea for short biting halibut.  They love to chew on the back end of the bait and this little rig gets 'em before they know it.  Simply hook the single hook into the nose of the bait and the treble in the tail and hang on.  The rig is adjustable so you can move the nose hook to accommodate the size of the bait.
