Saltwater Jigs

The Salas 6X Jr Yo-Yo Iron Jigs is perfect when you're trying to mimic a mid-sized bait.  The smaller model of the regular Salas 6x, the Jr. is smaller and lighter which makes it fall slower through the water column.  It's also great if the fish aren't in deep water or they are feeding on smaller bait.  Both eyes are welded and it comes with a very strong 3X strong hook.  Sometimes the paint will get in the eye of the jig where the ring passes through.  We suggest that you clean out this eye to increase the action of the bait.  The hook should move freely and a small piece of single strand 30# AFW Toothproof wire 6" long attached to the front of the jig will cause a different action, try it out.  

You can cast the jig long distances or drop it straight under the boat.  We drop it down to the desired depth, usually the bottom, and retrieve it back as quickly as possible.  30-40lb line is best and a 7 foot rod 20-40lb line rating.

The Salas 6X Yo-Yo Iron Jig is a yellowtail catching machine.  The shape and color of these heavy jigs creates the illusion of a fleeing baitfish from the depths.  It triggers a bite from a variety of species but yellowtail off the Southern California coast is the main reason we use these jigs.

Simply drop it down to the bottom or desired depth, put the reel in gear and bring it back at a fast but steady retrieve.  If they are there, they will eat it!

The lure may spin as it come up, that is ok and gets bit really well.  You are trying to get a reaction out of the fish and if it looks like it's going to get away, a yellowtail will hunt it down.  Hang on tight though, when they hit it they will hit it hard.  

The hook and rings are heavy enough for most yellowtail but you can also catch tuna on them.  Usually they like chrome or chrome blue, but they will eat other colors.  Barracuda and dorado will also bite any Salas Lure as long as it's moving fast.

The Salas 7X Heavy Yo-Yo Iron Jigs is the same fish catching shape as the legendary 7X Light surface iron...but with the beefed up weight of a yo-yo iron for those deep yellows!  Simply drop it down and wind it back up at a quick steady pace. We like 30 or 40 pound monofilament line for either your main line or your top shot.

Salas 7X Jr Surface Iron Jigs are the same fish catching shape and action as the full sized 7X but in a bite size lure. Perfect when the fish are finicky or biting smaller bait.  Simply cast it, let it sink for a couple seconds, and retrieve at a moderate rate.  Too fast and it will wash out, too slow and it will have a lazy action.  You want to create a reaction in the fish, so make sure you fish it at the right speed.

The Salas 7X Jr Heavy weighs in at 4.8oz, therefore it's not too heavy to cast out, but has plenty of weight to sink to the bottom to target those big homeguard yellows!

The Salas 7X Light Surface Iron Jig is one of the most iconic surface irons in existence. It's easy to fish and like all Salas, it gets bit.  Cast it as far as you can, let it sink for a couple seconds, and then a nice steady retrieve back.  Not too slow and not too fast, just enough so that a methodical erratic action takes place.  

Salas is hand made in Southern California and has been proven time and time again.  Each one has superior paint jobs and a thick clear coat that will stand up over time but even if the paint comes off, they still get bit.  We've found they get bit even better when the paint has scratches and looks a little beat up.  Yellowtail have teeth and can be very aggressive, this over time will remove the paint and clear coat.  Many panga fisherman like to scrape them on the launch ramp to get some of the paint off.  

Try out different colors, fish will eat them all but sometimes they will bite one color more than another.  We generally like to fish darker colors in low light conditions and lighter colors when there is more sun.

The Salas Baby 5X Surface Iron Jig is a sleeper surface iron that is often time overlooked, creating a secret weapon for many fisherman! Great for targeting; Yellowtail, Tuna, Calicos, and even Wahoo for our East Coast, and Long Range West Coast fisherman. Known to be cranked with a mid to slow retrieve, perfect for flat calm weather, or for more finicky fish that are a little tougher to trick into a bite.

The Salas O Pop surface irons feature much wider hips that provide a very wide swimming action when fishing with a slow to medium retrieve.  This jig is affective when the fish are holding in a zone and you don't want to move it too fast through that zone.  The wide hips cause this jig to have a wide kick as well.  Let it sink out a little longer before you retrieve it, the wider body makes it sink a bit slower than other Salas jigs.

Salas PL-68 Heavy Yo-Yo Jigs

The Salas PL 68 is a legendary big tuna catching lure. When the current is ripping and the fish are deep, the PL 68 is the go to jig.

This heavy jig is 10oz and 7" long which is great if you need to fish deep water or get through the smaller fish near the surface.  The rings are welded as all Salas Jigs are and the treble hook is strong enough for big tuna.  Blue white, blue mackerel, and glow white are great for jigging for big bluefin tuna in low light conditions or at night.

The rock fish color is great for lingcod as well, there is something about orange that gets them to bite.

The Shimano Current Sniper Jig is an outstanding jig under many circumstances and water conditions.  It can be fished on the surface or deep, vertical or horizontal, and it flat out catches fish.  We like it for it's versatility and color patterns. 

This was previously known as the Coltsniper.

The smaller sizes can be fished for freshwater largemouth bass or striped bass as well as tuna and yellowtail.   If fishing the smaller sizes for larger fish, we recommend changing the hooks and split rings to a stronger grade.
