Lake Nearly Full & the Topwater Bite Is Loading

Castaic Lake is almost full. After weeks of rising water repositioning fish and shifting patterns, the lake is nearly back to full pool — and that means the summer bite everyone has been waiting for is right around the corner. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com was on the water this week with the full May 31st report. Here's what you need to know before your next trip.

    🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

The story this week is simple: the rising water has spread the fish out. Spots that were reliable a few weeks ago may not be producing the same way right now, and the anglers having the best days are the ones willing to move until they get bit. If you're anchored to one area and the bites aren't coming — that's your sign to pick up and find the fish where they are, not where they were.

The 15 to 25-foot zone is holding the better fish. Dropshot rigs and light-line Carolina rigs fished in this depth range remain the most consistent producers on the lake right now. These aren't new recommendations — they've been the standard at Castaic all spring — but in a lake that's still in transition, reliable setups matter more than ever.

Wacky-rigged Daiwa Neko Fat worms put some quality fish in Jim's boat this week. Natural shad is the color to be on right now. If you've been running green pumpkin/black flake, it's worth switching over — especially with the water clarity varying significantly depending on wind direction and which part of the lake you're fishing.

The C3 Baits lineup continues to be the Castaic standard. The Bait Merchant-designed C3 Baits in Neptune Shad— specifically the Prototype Worm, the Ice Pick, and this week the Jobu — are producing consistently. Neptune Shad across all three profiles is the color call in clear water and Jim keeps coming back to it for good reason. If you don't have all three in your box, now is a good time to get stocked up before the summer patterns lock in.

Water clarity is the wild card this week. Conditions are varying quite a bit — green with algae in some areas, super clear in others — and it all depends on which way the wind is blowing. Jim's tip: the coves on the south side of the Fish Arm are running the cleanest right now. That's your starting point. And when one area isn't producing, don't sit on it — move. The fish are there, they're just spread out. Cover water until you find them.

🔥 Shad Spawn Update — The Topwater Bite Is Loading

The shad are still in spawning mode and Jim expects the topwater bite to ignite within the next week or two as the lake level stabilizes and fish settle into their summer patterns. This is the transition Castaic anglers look forward to all year — when predators and prey lock into their summer routines and the surface bite turns on.

When it goes, it goes fast. Be ready before it happens — not after. If your topwater box isn't stocked, come in this week.

    🐟 Striped Bass

Stripers still haven't committed to boiling on baitfish on the surface, but Jim is clear that it's a matter of timing, not if. Once the lake level stabilizes and both predator and prey settle into summer patterns, the topwater striper action should follow. Schools have been shallowing up for weeks — they're close.

For striper anglers, now is the setup window. Surface iron, pencil poppers, and topwater swimbaits need to be ready. Talk to our staff about what's been working at Castaic when the topwater striper bite fires — we'll have you dialed in before the rest of the lake figures it out.
