🎣 Largemouth Bass
The pattern that's been running for weeks at Castaic is holding strong — bass continue chasing shad and silverside minnows in the shallows of the main lake and into the backs of the major coves. Most of the baitfish are running three to four inches now, and the surface bite remains almost the entire game. Dropshot rigs and bottom-contact presentations are producing very few bites. Don't waste time on the bottom.
The wind is your ally. Jim's specific observation this week: the bite gets noticeably better when the south wind picks up, typically around 10 AM. If you're planning your day, be on the water before that window and stay through it. The wind chop breaks up the surface, activates the bait schools, and triggers the bass to feed.
The primary baits:
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 115 — Still leading the topwater bite alongside the Espetit; the larger profile continues to outperform the smaller options
→ Fishus Espetit 95 — Connecting on both largemouth and stripers in the same areas
→ Fishus Espetit 70 — Still in the rotation but the bigger baits are winning
→ C3 Baits Flukenstein — The addition of the week; Jim specifically called this out as very productive in the shallow grass for both bass and stripers
That last point is worth paying attention to. The Flukenstein in shallow grass gives you a different presentation than the hard topwater options — and when fish have seen a lot of walking baits and pencil poppers, a soft plastic subsurface twitch can be exactly what triggers a commitment. Have it rigged as a complement to your hard topwater setup.
🐟 Striped Bass
The large concentrated boils that were showing throughout August have spread out — Jim's explanation is the same as last week: stripers and largemouth are working the same bait schools simultaneously, pushing fish across a wider area rather than concentrating them in tight blow-ups.
The upside of that development is significant. Stripers are now hitting surface lures on blind casts in shallow water. You don't need to find a boil to get bit — work the shallow areas and grass flats with a topwater presentation and the fish will find it. Jim is still seeing stripers in three feet of water chasing shad over the grass flats, and those fish are aggressive.
Stripers are averaging four to seven pounds this week. That's a quality fish on a topwater lure in shallow water — one of the best situations in SoCal freshwater fishing.

Cast at any surface splash. In water this shallow with both species present, the fish on the end of your line could be anything — and at four to seven pounds, a striper on topwater in three feet of water is a good problem to have.
