Castaic Lake Fishing Report – August 2, 2026 | Wolf Packs Are Here & Topwater Is Getting Better Every Day
The transition is complete. Castaic Lake has moved out of the long spring and early summer structure bite and into the open-water, baitfish-chasing summer and fall pattern that defines the best fishing of the year on this lake. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com has the full August 2nd report — and if you've been fishing the same points and structure spots all season, it's time to adapt.
⚠️ Important Notices for All Anglers:
- West Ramp only for launching
- Lake closed Mondays and Tuesdays
🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass
The fish have moved and the game has changed. Bass have abandoned the main lake points and structure that produced all spring and early summer. They're now in open water, grouping into wolf packs of five to ten fish and chasing bait schools. If you're still anchored to your old spots, you're fishing where the fish were — not where they are.
The dropshot, wacky worm, and bottom-contact presentations that dominated for months have largely faded. They'll still pick up fish when a small school moves through a spot, but they're no longer the primary pattern. Adapt or grind.
The topwater bite is where the action is — and it's getting better every day. First and last two hours of daylight are the windows. The east end of the Fish Arm coves are the starting point. The baitfish are still on the smaller side, which means the fish are keying on smaller profile lures right now:
- MegaBass Karashi — Getting bit consistently over larger topwater options
- Jackall 007 Riser Bait — Producing in the coves during the low-light windows
- C3 Baits Flukenstein — Earning its place over bigger topwater presentations
One important note for topwater anglers: one to four pound stripers are mixed into the same bait schools as the bass right now. Have a Fishus Espetit 95 or Lucky Craft Gunfish within reach on every outing — when a striper blow-up happens in the middle of a bass topwater session, you'll want the right bait ready.
🐟 Striped Bass
The striper topwater bite is building with more frequency and the fish are averaging a solid two to four pounds. The bite is improving as the baitfish get bigger and the schools get more active. Location has been inconsistent — boils are popping up across the lake — but the spots that produce every year are already coming into play:
- Center Point
- Elderberry buoy line
- Elizabeth Canyon
- Mouths of the bigger coves
Stay mobile, watch for surface activity, and cover the known striper zones during the morning and mid-day windows.
The cut sardine bite at the Elderberry buoy line is producing for patient anglers willing to wait out the schools as they move through. Not the most exciting approach, but it's putting fish on the line when the surface action goes quiet.
