Freshwater Lures

On a fixed jig head, the hook and the lead are one rigid piece. The bait goes where the weight goes, at the speed you're reeling, and on a slow retrieve it looks like exactly what it is — a piece of plastic being pulled through the water.

Short version: the Neck Breaker separates them. The hook hangs off the head on its own pivot, so the bait rocks, glides, and settles on its own while the head does the sinking. Two heads per pack. Six weights, 1/8 oz through 1 oz.

Why a Swing Head

That independence shows up in the two situations where fish get picky: on the drop, and on a dead-slow retrieve along the bottom. A fixed head falls nose-down in a straight line. A swing head lets the bait glide off to the side and settle, which is what a dying baitfish actually does.

The pivot also changes the hook angle. Instead of tracking nose-down locked to the lead, the hook rides up off the head — a better position for a fish that eats from behind and below.

• Slow-rolling swimbaits through kelp stringers and over boiler rock for calico bass.

The Umbrella Rig Setup

Five baits tracking together at identical speed is the hardest presentation to make look alive. Every bait moving in lockstep reads as a lure, not a school. Swing heads give each bait its own motion inside that group, which is why they're the default choice on an A-rig.

The weighting rule is keel effect: your two heaviest heads go on the bottom two arms, lighter heads on the top three. Even weight across all five gives the rig nothing holding its orientation, so it rolls, spins, and twists your line.

• Let it fall on a slack line. The swing head's advantage is the glide, and a tight line takes it away. Most bites on this head come on the drop.
• Slow down further than feels productive. A fixed head needs speed to look right. This one doesn't, and speed is what kills the independent action you paid for.
• Buy in pairs of weights, not pairs of colors. When a head goes in the rocks you want the same weight back on, not the same color. Head color matters far less than bait color.
• Match the head to the bait's body, not to the fish. A head too heavy for the plastic kills the tail action no matter what you're targeting.

Common Mistakes

• Fishing it like a fixed head. Steady fast retrieve, tight line on the fall — that's a regular jig head presentation and the swing does nothing for you.
• Buying five heads for a five-arm rig. They come two to a pack. Five arms takes three packs, not two and a half.
• Even weights across an umbrella rig. The number one cause of a rig that helicopters and corkscrews your line.
• Going too heavy for the depth. On the drop, a head that outruns the bait pulls the plastic straight down and eliminates the glide.

What weight should I use for calico bass?
1/2 oz covers most of it. Drop to 1/4 oz inside harbors and calm water; go 3/4 or 1 oz for deeper structure or current.

What weights do I need for an umbrella rig?
Heavier on the bottom two arms, lighter on the top three. With 5" baits, 1/2 oz on the bottom pair and 1/4 oz on the other three. For deep water or current, 1 oz on the bottom and 1/2 oz on top.

Can I use it in freshwater?
Yes. It's built for saltwater but the same slow-roll and drop-and-pause presentations work on largemouth and smallmouth.

What swimbaits fit it?
Any soft paddle-tail or boot-tail swimbait. Match the head weight to the bait's body — a head too heavy for the plastic kills the tail action.

Does the head color matter?
Less than bait color, but it matters at close range in clear water. Raw and White disappear, Red and Hot Pink give the bait a visible strike point, and Camo and Cosmos are the low-visibility picks over structure.

There's a band of water most lures ignore. Not the surface, not two feet down — the few inches just underneath, where bass sit looking up at a topwater bait and refuse to break through for it.

That's what this bait is for. The Riser Bait 007 has a metal lip angled up instead of down, so water pressure that would drive a normal lure under drives this one toward the surface. It runs just beneath the film with a subtle wake and a tight rolling action — drawing fish upward without ever asking them to commit to the top.

Not a Topwater — and That's the Point

Everyone has had the day where fish boil behind a walking bait, push a wake at it, and turn off at the last second. They're up, they're interested, and they will not eat something on the surface.

A riser bait solves that specific problem. It gives them the same rising, fleeing target one layer down, where a fish can eat it without leaving the water. Jackall's own framing: it's built for surface-oriented fish that won't commit to traditional topwater.

What the 007 Means

It's the length in millimetres. The 007 is 70mm and the 012 is 120mm — Japanese naming convention, not a model year. If you've been searching for a "Riser Bait 70," this is it.

How to Work It

Steady retrieve. The lip does the work — no rod cadence required, unlike a walking bait that needs you to feed it rhythm. Reel and let it rise and roll.

Speed controls depth. Faster brings it closer to the film and increases the wake; slower lets it run a little deeper. Find the level fish are holding at and stay there.

Let it sink. A lot of our customers count it down and retrieve it well under the surface. The same upward lip gives it a rising, erratic track down there — and on days fish won't come up at all, that's often the bite.

• Don't bend the bill. The upward lip is the entire mechanism. Bend it and the bait won't rise or track. Handle it accordingly in the box and when you unhook a fish.
• Use it as your follow-up. When a fish boils on your walking bait and misses, throw this back at the same spot. Same fish, one layer down.
• Vary speed before you change color. Retrieve speed sets how deep it runs and how much wake it throws — that's your main adjustment.

Sound is an attractant right up until it isn't, and on flat mornings a quiet bait sometimes gets eaten by the same fish that just refused a loud one. Take the rattle version everywhere else — chop, wind, stained water, and any time you need to call fish from a distance.

Freshwater and Saltwater

The Espetit came out of the European seabass scene, which is why it casts and behaves the way it does — wind, chop, and long distances were the design brief.

Freshwater: 70mm and 95mm for largemouth and smallmouth, particularly on clear pressured lakes where a walking bait needs to be smaller than the standard.

Saltwater: the 125mm and 140mm are legitimate surface options for calico bass over structure, and for bonito and barracuda when they're feeding on top. The distance is the argument — boiling fish are usually further away than you'd like.

 When fish are breaking the surface or just subsurface, the Shimano Current Sniper Sinking Stickbait is going to be deadly!  This sinking stickbait is perfect for when fish are feeding on the surface and uses superior finishes and stout 3X strong hooks and split rings.  There are several retrieval methods that can be used effectively on many different predator fish.  

This was previously known as the Coltsniper.

Subsurface walk-the-dog is a very effective method and creates the illusion of a fleeing baitfish.  This can be more easily created using a spinning setup like the Shimano Thunnus and Shimano Terez but conventional rods and reels may also be used. Moving the rod tip while winding the reel with short pauses will cuase the bait to move left and right.  It's very important to give the lure some slack after pulling it each time.  If slack isn't given after each pull, the lure will not have the line needed to glide momentarily before you pull it again.  Skipping the lure on the surface is also a technique that can invoke a strike. Cast as far as you can and don't let it sink out.  Wind back the lure as fast as you can so that it skips on the surface.
