• Size to your leader, not your main line. The swivel only needs to be rated at or above your leader strength — not your braid. Most inshore and nearshore applications are covered by Size 3–4. Go to Size 5–6 for offshore yellowfin and wahoo. Reserve Size 7–8 for heavy marlin and billfish setups.
• Rinse after every saltwater trip. Ball bearing mechanisms hold up well in salt, but the bearing housing can trap salt crystals if left unrinsed. A quick freshwater rinse after each trip keeps the rotation smooth for seasons, not just months.

Q: What's the difference between a ball bearing swivel and a barrel swivel?

Q: Do I need a snap swivel or a straight swivel?
A: For most applications, a straight ball bearing swivel with a separate snap or split ring gives you more flexibility and a cleaner connection. The Carolina Keeper might be the best thing ever invented.  It's a simple piece of hard plastic that has a small slit through the middle.  If you hold it in your pliers with the slit perpendicular to the pliers and squeeze it, the slit will open up enough so you can slip your fishing line into it.  

These keep your weight or bobber from slipping down to the hook without having to tie a swivel on.  It saves you two knots and is very easy to use.  If you want the length between the wight and hook increased, just squeeze it and move it up the line further.

The Gamakatsu Round Bend Treble Bronze Hooks are very sticky hooks.  They aren't the strongest hooks with only 1X strong wire, but the thin wire sticks better than a stronger hook.  

If you're fish are coming off once hooked, consider going to these and see the difference.  You may need to change your hook out more often because they get bent, but at least you landed the fish.

The drop shot technique has become a popular and highly efficient method of rigging a worm to catch fish. Originating in Japan for catching pressured fish, it has been fine-tuned in California and is now used wherever bass and water are present. Which Test Rating

The rule is simple: the clip should be rated above your leader, not equal to it. Terminal hardware should never be the weakest link in the system — when something gives, you want it to be the line, not the connection, so you lose a lure instead of a lure and a fish.

What test rating should I buy?
Pick one rated above your leader so the clip isn't the weak link. 50 lb for harbor and bay, 75 lb for calico and general saltwater, 125 lb for yellowtail and umbrella rigs, 25 lb for light freshwater and small baits.

Which size for an umbrella rig?
75 or 125 lb. A five-arm rig carries five weighted baits and each clip holds one against the load of the whole retrieve.

Do the different ratings cost different amounts?
No. All four are the same price, so buy the rating you need rather than the one you think is cheaper.

Does the PK-Rig already come with clips?
Yes — the rig ships with a clip on each arm. These are replacements and spares.

Will a clip change how my lure swims?
On most swimbaits and jigs, no. On some small hard baits with delicate action, a clip swims differently than a loop knot — worth testing before you rely on it.

Are they visible to fish?
Black steel is about as low-visibility as terminal hardware gets. In very clear water with wary fish, a direct knot is still less hardware in the strike zone.

How long does a clip last?
Until it stops seating cleanly. Wire fatigues with repeated opening and closing — at fifty cents each, retire them early.
