🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

The wolf pack bass pattern continues — schools pushing baitfish from the main lake toward the backs of the bigger coves. The early topwater bite is drawing most of the attention, and with triple-digit heat arriving mid-morning, most anglers are wrapping up before the worst of it sets in. That's the right call. The bite is an early window, and fishing through the heat of the day isn't worth it right now.

The most important adjustment this week is reading the bait size in the cove you're fishing. The shad and silverside minnow mix at Castaic right now is not uniform across the lake:

→ Ski Arm coves — Jim is finding four-inch shad and larger silverside minnows
→ Fish Arm coves — Mostly one-inch shad

That difference matters for lure selection. If you're in the Fish Arm, stay small. If you're in the Ski Arm, you can size up and get the attention of bigger fish.

Lures producing right now:

→ MegaBass Karashi — Small profile, dialed in for the Fish Arm one-inch shad
→ Jackall 007 Riser Bait — Consistent topwater producer in the coves
→ C3 Baits Flukenstein — Matching the smaller bait profile and getting bit
→ Fishus Espetit 70 — The smaller Espetit profile getting attention from bigger fish when sized right for the bait
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 95 — Producing on bigger fish, particularly in coves where larger bait is present

Bottom-contact presentations like the dropshot are still picking up fish on points where wolf pack schools are moving through — worth having one rod rigged, but not the primary pattern.

🐟 Striped Bass

Striper boils ran all week around the West Ramp area and Center Point. One challenge: the schools were sitting in the jet ski zone at times, putting them safely out of reach from the boat fleet working the perimeter. When they push outside that zone, it's game on.

Best window: 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM — some days it runs longer, but that's your core window to be on the water and ready.

Baits Jim is using — and nothing else:

→ Fishus Espetit 95 — Any color with a white belly
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 95 — White belly, long-casting open water option
→ Lucky Craft Gunfish 115 — White belly, larger profile for bigger fish

White belly is the color call across all three. That's the profile matching the baitfish these stripers are actively chasing.

The sardine bite at the Elderberry buoy line has dropped off significantly. With the bulk of the stripers now chasing live bait schools, the stationary sardine approach isn't producing the way it was. Adjust accordingly.

Trollers are still finding action using the fly-lining technique in the 20 to 30-foot zone around the boil areas and at the mouths of the bigger coves in the Fish Arm where cooler, deeper water is present. A viable option when the surface boils aren't showing.
