Forget the points. Forget the structure. The mid-summer transition at Castaic is complete — bass are now chasing open water baitfish toward the backs of the bigger coves that have deep water nearby. If you're still running bottom-contact presentations on main lake structure, you'll pick up a few smaller fish, but you're fishing the wrong game plan.

Topwater early and late is where the quality action is. As temperatures push into the upper 70s and low 80s by mid-morning, the topwater window tightens to the first and last hours of the day. Be on the water at first light. Stay through last light. Those are your best opportunities.

Match the bait — downsize your topwater. The shad bass are chasing right now are on the smaller side, which means big profile topwater lures are getting passed over. Jim's current call is clear:
