Castaic Lake Fishing Report – July 19, 2026 | Topwater Action Starting & Striper Boils Showing Up
Castaic Lake is in its best shape of the summer. The water is mostly clear and algae-free, the no-contact ban has been lifted, and the shad migration into the coves is triggering the topwater action that's been building for weeks. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com has the full July 19th report.
⚠️ Important Notice for All Anglers:
- West Ramp only for launching
- Lake closed Mondays and Tuesdays
🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass
The deep finesse bite is still the most reliable producer. Dropshot and Carolina rigs in the 20 to 30-foot zone on main lake and secondary points are putting the most fish in the boat. The baits that have dominated all summer continue to lead:
- C3 Baits Prototype 1 Worm – Purple Haze & Neptune Shad — Both colors producing on the dropshot
- C3 Baits Ice Pick – Purple Haze & Neptune Shad — Running alongside the Prototype 1 this week
- C3 Baits Slim Pro – Cinnamon — Wacky rigged on a dropshot; consistent quality fish producer
The topwater bite has arrived — morning and evening. Shad are migrating into the coves and bass are following. If you're not running topwater during the low-light windows, you're leaving fish on the table. Work the backs of the major coves early and late. This bite will only improve as more bait pushes shallow.
One factor to manage: the no-contact ban being lifted has brought ski boat traffic back in force. Plan your water time accordingly — early morning before the boat traffic builds is the best window for both the topwater bite and the most productive shallow fishing of the day.
🐟 Striped Bass
The striper topwater bite is officially starting. Boils are showing on smaller fish in the two to three pound range — not the big blow-ups of peak summer, but the leading edge of what Jim expects to grow on a weekly, if not daily, basis. Get on the water in the afternoons, watch for surface activity, and have a long-casting topwater bait ready to go when the schools show. Stop into the shop and ask our staff what's been working at Castaic for striper — we'll get you set up for the bite that's building.
