The Boot That Started It All

The XTRATUF 12 in Legacy Boot, style #22172G, is the original β€” the boot that made XTRATUF a name in Alaska and then everywhere else. It is not a fashion boot with a fishing story attached. It is triple-dipped latex neoprene over a slip-resistant Chevron outsole, built to stand in a fish hold or a bait tank all day and shrug off the acids, oils and chemicals that destroy ordinary rubber.

Deciding between full height and ankle height? Read the XTRATUF Boots Buyer's Guide first β€” the 12 in Legacy and the 6 in Ankle Deck Boot solve different problems.

Why Latex Neoprene, Not Plain Rubber

XTRATUF builds the Legacy from latex neoprene, which is ozone resistant and noticeably softer, lighter and more pliable than ordinary boot rubber. That pliability is why you can wear a 12 in boot all day without your calves aching. The shells are triple-dipped for extra watertight protection, and the construction is seamless β€” there is no stitched seam to leak or split.

The Legacy is also rated for the things a boot actually meets on a working deck: acid and chemical resistant, and viral penetration resistant per ASTM F1671 / F1671M-13. Built-in cushion insoles with arch support carry the load underneath.

How We Wear Them in Southern California

This is the size we prefer down here, and there is a trick to it. Roll or flip the top section down when conditions are calm β€” it stops the shaft riding up your calf, keeps you cooler, and makes the boot far easier to pull on and off. The rolled cuff also stops the top edge from grabbing your leg hair, which is the number one complaint people have about full-height boots. If it turns and you need the height back, just un-flip the cuff.

Sizing: Order Up on Half Sizes

XTRATUF recommends that half sizes order up. A 10.5 buys the 11. With a 12 in shaft you also want room for a heavier sock β€” do not size down and try to make it work.

The Right Pick If...

  • You need full-height protection β€” fish holds, bait tanks, wash-downs, deep water on deck
  • You are around fuel, acids, or cleaning chemicals regularly
  • You want the option to roll the top down on calm days and roll it back up when it turns
  • You want the original XTRATUF, not the ankle-height version
  • You value all-day comfort over minimum weight

Gear That Goes With It

Tackle Express Tips

  • Flip the cuff down when it is calm. Rolling the top section over drops the effective height, vents heat, and keeps the boot from pulling leg hair. Un-flip it the moment conditions change.
  • Never store them folded or under weight. Do not lay heavy gear on them and do not leave them creased in a hatch β€” a permanent fold weakens the neoprene and that is exactly where the boot will eventually split.
  • Rinse after every saltwater trip. Salt crystals work into the neoprene at the flex points and accelerate cracking. Thirty seconds with a hose meaningfully extends the life of the boot.

FAQ

Is 12 in too much boot for Southern California?
Not if you roll the top down. That is exactly why we like this height here β€” you get full protection when you need it and an effectively shorter, cooler boot when you do not. If you never want the height, buy the 6 in Ankle Deck Boot instead.

Do these run true to size?
True in whole sizes. Half sizes should order up per XTRATUF. Same rule as the Ankle Deck Boot β€” note the Wheelhouse is the exception and sizes down.

What makes the Legacy different from the Ankle Deck Boot?
Height, material and duty rating. The Legacy is 12 in triple-dipped latex neoprene, acid and chemical resistant and ASTM F1671 rated. The Ankle Deck Boot is a 6 in hand-layered rubber slip-on for sport and recreational use. They share the Chevron outsole and nothing else.

Are they comfortable to stand in all day?
Yes β€” built-in cushion insoles with arch support, and latex neoprene that is softer and more pliable than ordinary rubber so the shaft flexes with your calf instead of fighting it.
