We like to fish this size on 8-12lb monofilament line with a soft tip rod. Don't work it too fast, sometimes a slow methodical walk the dog action will get them to bite much better than a faster retrieve. If the fish are super fired up, speed it up and then pause it for just a split second.
There is no wrong way, just make sure you try different methods of retrieve if they aren't hitting it and you know they are feeding on the surface. Sometimes going smaller to the Heddon Zara Puppy will get finicky fish to bite. Also try the medium sized Heddon Zara Spook for an average sized bait.

The Savage Gear 3D Shine Glide 185 is a slow sinking erratic swimming glide bait. These baits have been deadly on a multitude of game fish from largemouth bass to musky. On a slow retrieve the bait glides from side to side. A pop of the rod tip will increase the darting action. Deadly on a twitch and stop retrieve.
We like to fish this bait slowly with a steady retrieve but there are times when we twitch the rod tip. It washes out if its fished too quickly and we usually get bit on a slow and steady retrieve. Another favorite method is to start twitching it as soon as it hits the surface. A slow methodical upward pump of the rod tip while slowly turning the handle makes this bait flop back and forth on the surface. Keeping this going can keep the bait in the strike zone longer, giving the fish an irresistible presentation.

Hi guys, been fishing since I was a kid and and have been getting more serious about it recently. At least to the tune of retiring my cheap gear and picking up some decent equipment.
So I recently picked up 2 Californian Tri-Helix deck hand wrap rods. One of them is the 25-60 lb and the other is the 15 - 40 lb. I want to use a Cork Puppy or something other than the stock reel clamps. How do I determine which Cork Puppy to order? There are 3 sizes, and I don't have any calipers to get an accurate measurement. Do any of you know which size puppy I need to buy?
And just to toss it out there, I am putting a PENN JigMaster on the 25-60 lb rod and a Daiwa 40 on the lighter weight rod.

A1. Take a piece of string, go around the circumference of the butt where you want to set the reel, mark it where it meets, measure the length, divide by 3.14 for the diameter.
They have some adjustment to them.
A2. After you get your measurement multiply it by 25.4 to convert it to mm's.
A3. Typically a 10 to 25# rated rod is a 25mm, 15-30 to about 30-60 are 28mm and your big jig rods like a 90 or 100j or Ulua or baby Ulua are the 31 mm size.
I'd guess a 28mm for both.
A4. My 875h has a 25, 800xh a 28, and my 90j has a 31. All are strait corktape with no x rap. They work best when they hug the sides as well
We all know longer casts mean more water covered and the Rapala X-Rap Long Cast allows you to do just that. Rapala has increased the weight of the 14 size to 1 7/8oz from the original X-Rap which weighs 1 1/2oz. That's 3/8oz more weight for approximately 25% additional casting distance. If you make 100 casts at 30 feet per cast you'd cover 3000 feet. By using the Rapala X-Rap Long Cast, that means you will cover 750 more feet in the same period of time! That a lot of acreage covered just by using this lure.
