• Nose-hook it straight. If the bait sits crooked on the head, it will spin on the retrieve and kill the action. Lay the hook along the body before you thread it and mark where the point should exit.
• Slow down for white seabass. The retrieve that feels too slow is usually the right one, particularly during a squid spawn when fish are gorging and lazy.

Common Mistakes

• Using a hook that's too small. A bass-sized 4/0 leaves the point buried in an 8" body. Use 8/0.
