Castaic Lake Fishing Report – May 24, 2026 | Shad Spawning & the Topwater Bite Is Almost Here

The moment Castaic Lake striper and bass anglers have been building toward all spring is almost here. The shad are in spawning mode, the lake is nearly back to full pool, and everything Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com is seeing on the water points to a topwater explosion in the very near future — possibly days, not weeks. Here's the full May 24th report and what you need to be ready for it.

    🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

The pattern this week is consistent with recent reports, but the depth zone has shifted slightly shallower as the lake fills in.

The 10 to 25-foot range is where the fish are. As the lake continues to rise, bass have settled into a predictable band of depth along the drop-offs and ledges. This is a more fishable zone than the deeper water they were pushed to earlier in the month — and it means more anglers can get dialed in with the right finesse presentation.

Dropshot and light-line Carolina rigs are the primary producers. Both setups are working well in this depth range, and having both rigged and ready gives you the flexibility to adjust based on bottom composition and fish activity. When fish are actively feeding, the Carolina rig covers water efficiently. When they're more neutral, the dropshot keeps your bait in the zone longer and gets the extra bites.

Wacky-rigged Daiwa Neko Fat worms continue to produce on the aggressive fish — green pumpkin/black flake and natural shad remain the two color profiles to have tied on. If there's a fish willing to commit, this setup will get it done.

The baits Jim is leaning on this week: The C3 Baits Prototype Worm in Neptune Shad and the C3 Baits Ice Pick in Neptune Shad — both designed by The Bait Merchant — are once again the standard at Castaic. In clear water with good visibility, the Neptune Shad profile is doing the work. These aren't random picks — they've been Jim's go-to at this lake for a reason. If you don't have them in your box, now is the time.

🔥 The Big News: Shad Are Spawning

This is the detail that should have every Castaic angler on alert. The shad are in spawning mode. When shad spawn, bass and stripers both key in on the activity — and the feeding windows that follow can produce some of the best topwater fishing of the entire year.

Jim's expectation is clear: if the lake stabilizes in the next few days as it approaches full pool, a topwater bite could fire within days. That's not hype — that's what shad spawn season at Castaic produces every year when the conditions line up. This year they're lining up right now.

If you've been waiting to get your topwater setup dialed in, you've waited long enough. Come in this week.

    🐟 Striped Bass

Striper schools continue moving shallower day by day and Jim is seeing signs that spawning activity may have already begun in the last few days. They're not yet boiling on baitfish on the surface, but that transition is coming. Once the lake stabilizes and the shad spawn activity peaks, the inevitable summer topwater striper bite should follow.

For striper anglers, this is the setup window. Surface iron, pencil poppers, swimbait setups — get them ready before the bite turns on. When it happens at Castaic, it happens fast and the anglers who are prepared are the ones who cash in.
