Castaic Lake Fishing Report – May 17, 2026 | Dropshot Dominates as Lake Continues to Rise
The lake is rising fast at Castaic and the fish are telling you exactly where they want to be — deeper. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com was on the water this week and put together the clearest picture yet of what's happening out there. If you're heading to Castaic in the next few days, read this before you go.
🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass
The lake rising quickly is the dominant story right now, and it's dictating everything about how and where to fish.
The 15 to 30-foot zone is where the bigger fish are living. With the constant rise in water level, all but the small male fry-guarders have dropped off the shallower structure and settled into the stability of deeper drop-offs and ledges. Don't waste time shallow — the size is in the deep zone right now.
Dropshot is the technique of the week — and it's not close. Jim specifically notes that the light-line Carolina rig, which has been producing in recent weeks, is starting to bog down in the abundant bottom moss now covering most of the shallow rock in 15 feet or less. Dropshot keeps your bait up off the bottom and out of the moss. It's the cleaner, more efficient presentation right now and it's getting the most bites.
The bait that stood out this week: The C3 Baits Prototype Worm in Neptune Shad, designed by The Bait Merchant, outfished just about everything Jim put in the water. In Castaic's very clear water, that natural, translucent shad profile is hard to beat when fish have a good look at what you're throwing. This is a proven Castaic standard and it's worth having in your box before your next trip.
Wacky-rigged Daiwa Neko Fat worms are also producing on the more aggressive fish — specifically in green pumpkin/black flake and natural shad color profiles. If you've got fish that are willing to commit, this is the setup that'll get them in the boat.
Smallmouth note: While the bigger largemouth are concentrating in the deeper zone, smallmouth can be found just about anywhere on the lake right now. Keep a finesse setup ready at all times — you never know where one is going to show up.
On the shad: Shad schools are staging in the back half of most coves in five to fifteen feet of water. Jim expects they won't spawn until the lake level stabilizes, which could be another week or two. Once that happens, look for everything to accelerate — bass, stripers, and topwater opportunities all at once.
🐟 Striped Bass
The striper situation is building. Schools are getting shallower by the day and most of the action is now happening in 15 to 30 feet of water. They haven't started boiling on baitfish yet, but the conditions are stacking up — shallowing bait, rising temps, active schools moving into position.
Jim expects the main topwater action to show in the coming weeks once the lake stabilizes. When it does, it tends to happen fast. If you're a striper angler, now is the time to get your surface iron, pencil poppers, and topwater gear dialed in — not after the bite turns on. Come talk to our staff about what's been working at Castaic when the topwater striper bite fires. We'll have you ready before the crowds figure it out.

🛒 What to Have in Your Box This Week

Dropshot (Primary Pattern):
- C3 Baits Prototype Worm – Neptune Shad — Jim's top performer this week in clear water. This is the bait to have.
- Dropshot Hooks — Light wire, size 1 or 1/0, for finesse presentations in clear water
- Dropshot Weights — 3/16 to 1/4 oz for the 15 to 30-foot zone
- Fluorocarbon Leader Material — Clear water demands low-visibility line. Don't cut corners here.
Wacky Rig:
- Daiwa Neko Fat Worm — Green pumpkin/black flake and natural shad are the specific colors Jim called out
- Wacky Rig O-Rings & Hooks — Protect your baits and get more bites per worm
Striper Prep (Get Ready Now):
- Surface iron, pencil poppers, and topwater swimbaits. The bite is weeks away, not months. Stop in and ask our staff what's been working — we'll make sure you're ahead of the curve.
