Castaic Lake Fishing Report – June 7, 2026 | First Topwater Stripers of the Year Are Here
Castaic Lake Fishing Report – June 7, 2026 | First Topwater Stripers of the Year Are Here
The wait is over. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com put it on the board this week — the first topwater stripers of 2026 showed up at Castaic mid-week, and the bass are transitioning out of their post-spawn doldrums and starting to group up for the summer feeding frenzy. If you've been patient all spring, your time is now. Here's everything you need to know before your next trip.
⚠️ Important Notices for All Anglers:
- Fishing is CATCH AND RELEASE ONLY at this time
- No body contact with the water — swimming and skiing are not permitted
- West Ramp only for launching
- Lake closed Mondays and Tuesdays
Please make sure everyone in your party is aware before you launch.
🎣 Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass
The seasonal shift that Castaic bass anglers wait all spring for is happening right now. With the lake nearing full capacity, the bulk of the largemouth are finishing up their post-spawn recovery and starting to group up into the wolf packs that define the summer fishery. The bite isn't wide open yet — the fish are still a bit spread out — but the direction is unmistakably positive. The best move right now is to stay mobile. Hit a spot, give it a fair chance, and if the bites aren't coming, pick up and find the fish where they are.

The 15 to 25-foot zone is still the primary depth range for quality fish. Dropshot rigs, light-line Carolina rigs, and wacky rigs continue to produce the bulk of the bites and should be your baseline setups. These have been the Castaic standard all spring and they're not going anywhere yet.
But here's the shift worth paying attention to: Reaction baits are starting to get bit. Hard jerkbaits, soft jerkbaits, and underspins are generating interest from fish that are coming out of their post-spawn funk and actively feeding again. This is the transition from pure finesse fishing into a more versatile approach — and it's a sign the summer pattern is loading. Have at least one reaction bait tied on alongside your finesse rigs every trip.
C3 Baits continue to lead the pack. The full Bait Merchant-designed C3 Baits lineup is producing this week, and Jim has expanded the color call beyond Neptune Shad. Purple Haze and Cinnamon are now in the rotation alongside Neptune Shad as the go-to patterns. Different water clarity conditions across the lake — and the algae situation varies significantly by area — mean having multiple color options matters right now. Stock all three.
Water clarity note: The lake is running green with algae in areas, with the Ski Arm carrying heavier algae than the Fish Arm. The east end of the Fish Arm is the cleanest water on the lake right now — start there and work out from that area when conditions allow.
🔥 The Topwater Bass Bite Is Loading
Shad are still in spawning mode and Jim expects the topwater bass bite to ignite any day as wolf packs of bass push baitfish to the backs of the coves. When this happens at Castaic it's one of the most exciting bites in SoCal freshwater fishing — surface explosions in shallow coves, reaction strikes on every cast, and fish that have been deep all spring suddenly very, very catchable.
If your topwater box isn't ready, come in this week. Don't wait until you're on the water.
🐟 Striped Bass — The Season Has Started
This is the headline of the week. Jim caught the first topwater stripers of 2026 at Castaic — mid-week, in the afternoon, after spotting splashes in the east end of the Fish Arm across from Utopia. That's the starter's pistol for striper season at Castaic.
The baits Jim is committing to this season: Lucky Craft Gunfish and Espetit 95s — and he's not hedging on it. His reasoning is straightforward: they cast far and they hook fish well. Two things that matter when you're throwing at fish that are blowing up on bait 60 feet away. These are the baits to have tied on when the action shows.
For anglers who prefer a more stationary approach, cut sardines are producing solid fish for those willing to put in the time. Not as explosive as the topwater bite, but a viable option when the surface action is quiet.
The striper topwater bite at Castaic is one of the best fisheries in Southern California during the summer months. It's here. Get your gear right and get out there.
