Bass Biting on Jerkbaits & Finesse Rigs

Castaic Lake had a shorter-than-usual week — the lake was closed Thursday through Saturday for the annual Kids Day fishing event — but that didn't stop the bass from showing up when the conditions were right. Guide Jim Taibi of 661Fishing.com was on the water Wednesday and put together this week's report.

If you're planning a trip to Castaic in the coming days, here's what's working and what to have in your box.

    Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass

Wednesday's wind actually helped trigger a reaction bite, and anglers who came prepared for it were rewarded.

Hard jerkbaits were the move. Lucky Craft Staysee 90s in Ghost Minnow and Aurora Black were the standout producers, worked through the 10-foot depth range where bass were staging. These aren't surprise picks — the Staysee 90 has been a SoCal confidence bait for years, and right now it's earning that reputation again at Castaic. The erratic, suspending action is exactly what bass want when wind chop breaks up the surface and triggers feeding windows.

Spinnerbaits also accounted for fish in the same 10-foot zone. If you're throwing a spinnerbait at Castaic right now, match the shad profile — natural whites and silvers are the call with the water clarity sitting between 10 and 20 feet with light algae.

Finesse fishing continues to be the consistent producer. Dropshot rigs and Carolina rigs are both dialed in, and wacky-rigged 5-inch stickbaits flylined around the first drop-offs closest to shore are putting fish in the boat. If the wind dies and the bite goes slow, this is your fallback. Don't leave the dock without it.

Bass up to three pounds were reported this week. Not a trophy week by Castaic standards, but the fish are active and the pattern is repeatable.

    Striped Bass

No striper report this week due to the shortened schedule, but here's the encouraging news: shad schools are moving shallower. When baitfish push up, the stripers follow — and that transition can happen fast at Castaic. Keep an eye on this over the next few weeks. Surface iron and swimbaits will be worth having ready.

    Rainbow Trout

Stocking is done for the season. The trout that were planted for Kids Day are the last of it. Trout fishing at Castaic is effectively over until next season — time to shift your focus entirely to bass and striper.

🛒 What to Have in Your Box This Week

Based on Jim's report, here's what we'd recommend picking up before your next Castaic trip:

    Reaction Bite:

    • Lucky Craft Staysee 90 – Ghost Minnow and Aurora Black are the specific patterns Jim called out. We stock both.
    • Spinnerbaits – Natural shad-matching colors in the 3/8 to 1/2 oz range for the 10-foot zone.

    Finesse Bite:

    • 5-inch Stickbaits – Senkos, YUM Dinger, or your preference wacky rigged. We carry a full selection.
    • Dropshot Hooks & Weights – Don't show up without a pre-rigged dropshot option. It's the most consistent bet on the lake right now.
    • Carolina Rig Components – Bullet weights, swivels, and leader material. Simple setup, still producing.

    Striper Prep (Coming Soon):

    • Swimbaits and surface iron will be worth having ready as the shad push shallower and stripers move in behind them. Stop in and ask our staff what's been working at Castaic when striper season kicks off.
