Castaic Lake Fishing Report: March 22, 2026 β Finesse Plastics Crushing the Bass Bite with Guide Jim Taibi
Largemouth & Smallmouth Bass: The Finesse Bite Is On Fire π₯
The bass fishing remains excellent, and right now finesse plastics are the undisputed champs. Most fish are cookie-cutter smallmouths mixed with some solid largemouths, and theyβre dialed in on light-line presentations in 10β25 feet of water.
Hot zones right now:
- Ski Arm
- Fish Arm
- Main-lake and secondary points
- 45-degree rock walls, bluffs, and rocky transitions near deep water
Top techniques:
- Dropshot rigs
- Light-line Carolina rigs
Baits that are getting the majority of bites:
Β
- C3 Baits Shimmyβs in Neptune Shad on a Carolina rig
- Bait Merchant / C3 Baits Calligator and Prototype Worm in Purple Haze on a dropshot
Hard baits (crankbaits, jerkbaits, and even Megabass Karashi twitchbaits) are getting looks but very few commits. The fish just arenβt in full chase mode yetβclassic pre-spawn behavior. Save the reaction baits for the next couple of weeks when things really turn on.
Pro tip from Jim (and our Santa Clarita crew): Keep your line light (6β8 lb fluoro), use a subtle shake, and stay patient. These fish are suspended or hugging the bottom on those transitions, so a slow, natural presentation is key.
Striped Bass: Scattered But Better Days Coming
The striper bite hasnβt patterned up yet. Fish are spread across the lake at all depths, making them tough to target consistently. Once the shad move shallow to spawn (should be any day now), expect the bite to get predictable and stay strong for the rest of the year. Hang tightβgood striper fishing is right around the corner!
Rainbow Trout: No Big Change
A few trout are still showing up as bycatch for anglers throwing dropshots and Carolina rigs while targeting bass. Shore fishing remains slow. Weβll keep you posted on the next stockingβif one happens, the bite usually turns on fast.
