Castaic Lake Fishing Report 12/08/24

A big load of Trout from one to eight pounds (and maybe bigger) are keeping anglers busy in the West Ramp area. Bait anglers are getting bit on Berkley Mice Tails, Gulp pinched crawlers on a dropshot rig and inflated nightcrawlers on a Carolina rig. Two to four pound leaders are best.

Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:

Not much of a change this week as the bite is spread out anywhere from 10 to 40 feet deep with the bigger fish being the deepest. Some smaller Bass in the one pound range are still shallow hiting small jerkbaits and swimbaits, but the quality bites are coming on finesse plastics. C3 Baits Shimmy’s and Jobu’s in the Neptune Shad pattern on a dropshot or light-line Carolina rig are accounting for most of the action. Main lake points, bluffs and rocky banks near deep water are good places to start. Dragging the rigs parallel to the bank with your electric motor will keep your offering in the strike zone 100% of the time and will allow you to see where they are holding with your sonar and adjust your depth before your rig gets to them.

Striped Bass:

Besides the occasional early morning or late afternoon mid-lake surface flurry, not much has changed since last week as the bulk of the fish remain spread out in deeper water from 40 to 100 feet. Jigging spoons and ice jigs are getting a few bites as well as deep trolling, but the bite requires a lot of time spent searching for schools of active fish.

Rainbow Trout:

A big load of Trout from one to eight pounds (and maybe bigger) are keeping anglers busy in the West Ramp area. Bait anglers are getting bit on Berkley Mice Tails, Gulp pinched crawlers on a dropshot rig and inflated nightcrawlers on a Carolina rig. Two to four pound leaders are best. For lure anglers it’s hard to beat a small swimbait like a Sierra Slammer, 2.0 Keitech or a Hook Up jig.
