Castaic Lake Fishing Report 08/17/25
Castaic Lake Report 08-17-2025
Largemouth and Smallmouth Bass:
Bass fishing stayed strong this week, especially in the mornings. The surface bite provided lots of action spot casting to individual fish. Utilizing small topwater baits that stay in the splash circle of feeding fish is the key to this bite. Megabass Karashiβs, small poppers, SPRO Phat Flys and tiny Zoom Flukes will work on this detailed bite. Donβt blind cast, just be ready to cast into a splash circle within three seconds or so and youβll get bit almost every time. Once the surface bite dwindles, a dropshot rig fished along steep walls and main-lake points in the five to twenty foot depth range is hard to beat. Any of the C3 finesse baits or Bait Merchant Caligators are a good choice in just about any of the popular colors. Wacky rigged four and five inch Senkoβs and C3 Baits Slim Proβs are providing quality bites fished in the same areas. Most of the action is done by noon when the heat and the pleasure boaters take over.
Striped Bass:
Strong surface boils around the island and forebay buoy line areas are keeping rod bents on six pound average fish. Lucky Craft Gunfish 100βs and Espetit 95βs remain the go-to choices because of their greater casting distance. Good color choices are Ghost Minnow for the Gunfish and White Flash for the Espetit. The bite has been good first thing in the morning and remains strong til the sun gets high around 11 or 12.
Bluegill:
βGills continueΒ biting near overhanging green bushes that provide shade in the backs of coves like Dry Gulch, Hawks Nest and Utopia. A small piece of red worm or meal worm will get bit all day. Great fun for the kids as it is a very visual bite and easy to do.
